I was stuck at rank #2 for a while because I missed a photography quest that wasn't available at a bar. There should be 4 in total.

By far my least favorite part of the game, especially since Neutral is clearly the true ending of the game. Even story wise it started falling apart at that point where it started really strong for me-- "restore people's hope by doing side quests and filling a chalice with their happy tears." It's too arbitrary of a request even by JRPG standards.

The game did start out pretty strong though, more on the back of the atmosphere and setting than a heavy handed narrative. It had more story and character interactions than SMT3 (and the first two based on what I hear), but still nowhere near as much as other JRPGs. It felt very appropriate given the series' roots, retaining almost all the charm and intrigue. Yes, it almost fell apart after the Neutral alignment lock near the end, but then so many other JRPGs do-- they almost never finish strong.

Those end-game quests could've been much worse, such as collecting uguu-juice soaked panties, right magoose?

Fuck...did all the other Nozomi quests. The only things that are left are Multi Demon Fusion and Rebirth of the Lady. Multi Demon is supposed to start in a room in Ikebukuro but it's empty right now. Headed to hunters guilds but the quest isn't popping. I'm at #2 right now too. Fuck!!!

Atlus stories always struggle towards the end.

See: Catherine
P3/P4
Arguably P2
Others I'm forgetting

The main exceptions I can think of that have a good tail end of the game in terms of story were DDS1 and 2.

Atlus are really bad at late game exposition. This weakness is the worst in Catherine.

I have no clue why Japanese devs are bad at making conclusions and late game expose.

Also shut the fuck up Magus.

Finished it, got Neutral ending. The thing that fucked me over was that I didn't realize that required side quests were popping at different bars, I assumed new quests were distributed to all bars at once (on the grounds that they look exactly the same). Final play time 50 hours, only side mission I couldn't finish was defeating Beezelbub.

I love this game with every part of my body

That's how I eventually got him (alongside Charged Desperate Hits and Tetrakarn?) but something getting 3 Megidolas in one round and wiping all your high level party out made me real sour the first couple of rounds.

How soon after the final choice do you know if you got Neutral?

I'm at

and I started a 2nd save right before getting here since it seems like there's enough +5 choices left (assuming I'm around the middle right now) that if I don't get Neutral I can just reload my 1st save and change a choice to get neutral if I don't.

What I have heard, but not yet experienced since I'm not back to that point in the game yet after deliberately selecting the bad ending, is that bosses will do nothing but Almighty attacks if your entire party is immune to the type of damage they do.

Playing with Null / Drain / Repel attacks via fusion and armors can make the majority of the game trivially easy, but it's also what will completely fuck you over in the endgame.

I heard the exact same and I personally think it's true since I had this motherfucking almighty-magnet on my team: http://www.imgur.com/yi8yvVz.jpeg

Awesome.  I think I'll just rush this part and then if I don't get neutral I'll rush it again with slightly different choices.  These sections are especially making me not like either choice.

Ok, fuck that PoS Beezlebub.  Megadoran x 3?  Give me a fucking break.  Nothing can survive that and you can't reflect/soften the damage.  If he didn't spam that stuff 2-3x per round he'd be fine, but that's crazy.  Going to have to make some new demons >_<

So yeah, making a lvl.80 party where everyone person has luster candy & debilitate (I think that's what they're called in english version; in Japanese SMT it's always Luster Candy & Randomizer) and then making him -3 at all times and my party +3 with Topping for HP in the 1000s...that was easy lol

BUT

BUT

wtf, I'm stuck now!  I've done EVERY QUEST IN MY CHALLENGE QUEST LIST including all 10 VR battles and everything!  But I'm still only ranked #2 so I can't progress the story.  Uh, I'm guessing all that would be left are like hidden quests?  Ones I get from talking to demons or people hidden around the world map?  This is going to be annoying finding the last quest or two I need to get to #1 ;_;

Probably different names, but the same quests I'm sure.

I think I need to do this Black Maria revival, that doesn't sound familiar so I doubt I've done it.  I think I've done the prior ones in the line, just not the last one?

SHIT THAT FUCKED ME:
Certain quests only pop at certain bars. I was missing one that appeared only in Ueno. There are also some required quests that start in pretty obscure locations. Check a walkthrough!

Yeah, I just got the Black Maria revive quest in Ueno.  Gonna do it and see if that's it or if there are others I'm still missing.

I'd been checking the different bars for quests the whole game, but once they all merged in rankings at the neutral path I sort of assumed the quest disbursement would merge as well.  GUESS NOT  :maf

Still love the game, but yeah the 5-6 hours of quest clear up in the neutral path is a bit of a drag for sure.  I'm not sure I like my SMT having tons of sidequests like the EO games.  I like them to be more linear story experiences with huge dungeons and awesome kick you in the face difficulty like SMT3.

Grrrrrrr

Checked all 4 bars (ueno, shinjuku, shibuya and ginza) and no new quests.  This last one or two are hidden :/
It says there's 4 photo shoot quests?  I think I only did 3, maybe that's it.

Well it turned out it was the last 2 photo quests that I was missing.

aaaand after 7 and a half hours of doing every goddamn quest in the game, I can finally get back to the story and see if I remember what the game was all about before this point.  Will see if I can beat it tomorrow.  Lvl.80 with the ability to make demons up to lvl.84 right now.

Finished first of the two final dungeons, wasn't too bad.  The upside down bits were a bit annoying in the dungeon.

One thing I'm kind of hmmmmmm about is for a mainline SMT which has a pretty rocking story throughout, the endgame seems...lacking in big baddies.  Like shouldn't

spoiler (click to show/hide)
the neutral/chaos route that takes you to god's palace place have you fight Gabriel and all her weird ass mecha great angels that you saw when they requested you to kill Lilith?  They were like the main ANGEL BADDIES and then it's like they just disappeared from the story.

I'm guessing neutral will have the same weird feel where you don't take out Lillith in the demon dungeon and instead will just take out a version of spikey hair'd dude one wing'd angel version.

It just seems like going from ANGELS AND DEVILS AND GODS AND SO ON to "look at these two versions of possible future tokyo -> ok let's make Tokyo happy -> oh noes we need the souls from your two buddies who've gone all power 9000"...seems...not so much SMT.  I mean in SMT3 you fought all your friends if you weren't on their side...but then you still fought GOD (vortex god) in the end.  Even in Strange Journey, if you're neutral you fight blond girl and spanish dude in their power 9000 forms...but that's the 2nd to last bit, then you have a normal final dungeon where you fight GODMOTHER OF ALL DEMONS at the bottom.

So basically I'm saying it seems like SMTIV is missing that FINAL DUNGEON that's supposed to be after when you kill your homies and has you fight some godlike diety or something as the final boss.

In the end feels kind of lackluster and non-epic for SMT is all I'm saying.  Then again maybe there will be SOME COOL STUFF after I beat spikey haired dude in Satan's palace next.  Will see!

I'm guessing not though, that Tokyo and Mikado join and then everyone goes like this:

 :tauntaun :tauntaun :tauntaun :tauntaun :tauntaun

and the credits roll.

Finished neutral, lvl.87, 52 hours.

Cool game bro, but yeah story starts strong and has neat stuff midgame but kind of forgets it's a story-based rpg for the last 1/3rd.  Gameplay is good though once you hit the 80s with all the best attacks there's nothing much left to do gameplay-wise.  Like there's hardly any new demons to fuse and no one has any new interesting skills.  Both final bosses were beat with the same strategy of only my MC attacking (with his 300 magic and 200 agility) so 800-1400 damage per attack while the other 3 do luster candy/debilitate/heal.

Still a lot of fun stuff.

Pros:
+Great battle system
+Excellent soundtrack, lots of tracks, lots of good stuff.
+Pretty good art design
+Nice world map, lots to explore, good amount of cities
+Story was pretty interesting for a long while but gets weak in the end
+Tons of demons
+Good graphics for 3DS and budget
+Fast pacing, but still great length

Middle:
+/- lots of sidequests which some are fun to do an add content, but they also drag the pacing of the overall story and game down, especially for neutral route
+art is all over the fucking place.  But a lot of its solid.  Only hated a few designs like Medusa and Lucifer is gross.

Cons:
-Too easy for a mainline SMT.  On normal outside of the first 8 hours, probably easier than Strange Journey and thus easier than Nocturne or most of the megaten spinoffs.  Not much sense of dread.
-Don't like how a lot of areas didn't have distinct music and there were just a bunch of dungeon/city themes that cycled, took away from the memorable character of the places
-Story is a lot like Strange Journey where it starts of intriguing but then becomes GOOD/BAD standard by the end.  Also kind of not-epic by the end, maybe least "epic" scale SMT yet
-Why doesn't the demon book have a % complete wtf
-No really big dungeons.  The smaller dungeons are like 20 mins long and the bigger ones are like 40 mins long.  It feels like MGS Peace Walker where everything was made "bite-sized" for 3DS.  I miss big long dungeons that you have to worry about endurance to make it through.

Still great game.  One of the best rpgs in a while.  A bit better than Strange Journey, though I still think Nocturne is a much better adventure.  This plays better for sure though with all the updated systems and fast pacing (I'm sure Nocturne feels dated these days).

Will be interesting to see how Soul Hackers compares when I get around to playing it in a few months.  Need an SMT break.  Took me like 4 months of playing a couple hours a week to get through IV.

The best part of the game (at least the most SMT part) imo was the:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
tower to rescue the 3 trapped angels.  Was very creepy and very mythos.  You were rescuing 3 weird as fuck looking dudes but you had no idea who they were, only they couldn't die and so they were being held in cages by demons.  The whole tower bit and then their restoration as angels was great.  Wish the game was more mythos like that.

In other news, I went to look for the SMTIV soundtrack for purchase and uh, did Japan stop releasing osts for every game imaginable?  You'd think for a big title like SMTIV they'd release a soundtrack but it seems like there's nothing.

Yeah it could be a little better by telling you where cities and locations you've been to are in case you forget, but otherwise it's good and has a nice sense of exploration as you uncover it.

Neutral Route OMG

It extends the game soooo much. Finally beat it last night, final playtime was 69-70 hrs. I said fuck it and started using a guide after I saw that I was gonna have to do all them fucking sidequests. Still, I mostly enjoyed the game and I was happy to finally play a full rpg (not strat or first person dungeon crawler) on a handheld.

So the official soundtrack of this dropped while I was in Japan. Picked it up and listened to it for the rest of my tokyo vacation, fantasizing about battling demons in the shibuya underground

It felt so quaint buying a cd in a store...tee hee
