yah that happens with a lot of MMOs

I was away head of my friends in BDO and then quit playing, then some came back way later and have lapsed me in levels. I don't really care too much, because the sandbox LifeSim stuff still works for me and sort of has its own leveling system. My "ability points" or activity points or whatever is probably just as high as theirs, and my farming/fishing level is above people who just mob grinded. I think they finally built fishing boats when I've already made a few boats. I began running hte Milk Tea market when they quit playing and had a few farms of sunflower seeds, strawberries and herbs. Would use ingredients to make quality milk tea, sell the tea and sell the excess lower quality yield of crops. I would sometimes grow wheat and ferment it to make beer, which you need to pay your workers/slaves. The milk tea market made decent gold as long as you monitored your crop growth, which would take a day or two to grow. Sometimes it was faster money to take the boat out fishing. The farming did allow me to grow cherry blossom trees, which I sold the cherry blossoms and put small cherry blossom trees in my house. You earn income for having a beautiful house, and all the cherry blossom and furniture makes my house worth a bit.

I built a Shipyard for making boats on the starter island, but it takes too long and too many materials to be a money maker.

i wish i could find the description i saw that described how to upgrade your shit in bdo. something about grinding with shitty gear and combining it with good gear while also spending tens of millions of gold, just for the chance to increase stats. it was so ass backward and awful sounding it singlehandedly put me off of trying the game.

The enchantment/upgrade system is awful. Biggest problem with the game, along with the "just grind mobs" general PVE. They should add an event system.

I think the main reason the upgrade system exists as it does is due to development time contraints in regards to animations. They limit the amount of armor in the game. Most of it can be put on at earl levels and then after that you just upgrade it with the enchant system. This means less worry about visual design time, less animations to account for and an overall limited look. The Char creator has a ton of options, but the classes are gender locked and the armor either skins in the money shop or the limited sets in-game.

If you have an itch I'd play something else because vanilla won't be released for a year at least I imagine.  Lots of vanilla content was destroyed when Blizzard revamped the world in Cataclysm and the game is just fundamentally different in a lot of ways that goes beyond content.

also there's no cross-realm bullshit in vanilla

i played on a private server i did deadmines which took two hours, later i encountered the same people i partied with to do that dungeon

that feeling of running into someone you did a dungeon with, that's something unique i haven't experienced in so long

and it does a much better job of making the world feel 'alive' than having NPCs say a million lines

I’ve played a lot of private servers in the last 6 or so years and while you can definitely get that community fix that you’re discussing: everyone knows the strats and they’re really not that difficult anymore. Don’t get me wrong, they’re a lot of fun but I’m not sure I’d expect 2 hour deadmines.

That said Classic will be a shit show at first until everyone without nostalgia for it quits of tedium. You think you remember how tedious Vanilla was but oh boy.

Also Vanilla rotations were, for the most part, boring as shit.

Tried to boot up Runescape and found out why i quit, again. Too much degradable equipment on top of the usual grind that the game always had. There's also that "Las Vegas" feeling the game has these days due to corporate fucks trying to get your money through numerous microtransactions.

I remember going through one of the quests in Stranglethorn Vale with a friend. Think it was the day the original Wii came out. I'd play an hour of WoW and my friend'd be playing Wii Sports and after an hour we'd switch games.

Them 0.5% drop rates on quest items or whatever that shit was.

Ive never dived deep into an MMO. I feel like im quite picky and my perfect MMO hasnt been released yet. Ive played games like flyff, legend of edda, elders scrolls online, guild wars 2, runescape.

I'm not sure I can articulate what exactly im looking for, I want a game where I can play and grow with people with a large diversity of options. Like I love how runescape has all kinds of skills/job/playstyles, but gameplay is a bit shallow, right now I dont have a gaming rig. So I think I will try BDO and Tera when theyre released on xbox, Teras combat style interests me, and will be interesting to see how that translates into pvp.. And BDO overall world seems a bit deeper than just the grind > raid only. I feel like I should dive deeper on elders scrolls online, especially with the expansions that has released, maybe there was a large part of the game im missing out on.

I'd actually suggest FFXIV to you, it's honestly one of the better MMORPGs. Good graphics, awesome sounds. You can level up in many different ways and it doesn't feel tedious. There are lots of classes, and you can put them all on the same character. You can play alone and also with others. There are some parts of the main scenario quests where you have to play with others, but that's fine. It's also a little overwhelming with content, but easy to get into. I dunno if you were into the FF series, but if you were, the sounds and the monsters will bring you down on a fun nostalgia trip.

Im probably going to pick up a PS4 to play monster hunter world with my mates, would be a shame to pick up a console for one game, so will give it a bash. No nostalgia factor for me though, never played any of the final fantasies growing up.

I wasn't talking about the overall experience. I was replying to 'Vanilla rotations'. They reduced every class to 'use on cooldown'. It's actually reminds me of Guild Wars 2 and the whole thing is just bizarre. 'Expansions' to dumb down the entire game, basically.

I know you were. The vast majority of Vanilla rotations are literally the same combination of 3 abilities repeated to death. That’s if you were lucky and not just spamming Frostbolts or desperately trying to weave in actual abilities between auto shots. Maybe you spice it up with a dot or two assuming we’re at a patch that can handle more than 8 dots.

I promise you that you’re romanticizing how great Vanilla rotations were and I promise you that Legion is 10x as complicated 99% of the time.

Still not sure what you're looking for hungrymoob. I can tell you that the BDO leveling experience is grindy. What it has as a play option is the life sim/sandbox stuff. You can buy up real estate, establish a refinery or go deep into breeding horses. BDO is combat, beautiful world, and an interconnected web of systems for its sandbox.

Would help if I knew what you liked/disliked about the games you've tried.

been playing ffxi for the last few days. initially getting into it was rough as hell. it still uses a playonline app to log in ffs. the app has a bunch of wallpapers and avatars and whatnot from old ps1 Square games so that along with the goofy much was a nice nostalgia blast. after that though I had to find a separate program to adjust graphics settings and controls and was instantly triggered by memories of countless old shitty pc ports.

in game i haven't done much besides talk to npcs and kill a few monsters in the opening area. there's no icons to show you who will give you a quest so that's annoying as fuck. it's also impossible to tell what quests you'll be able to complete at your current level until you go out and attempt them, so I know that'll be fucking annoying too. i started my first story quest and then looked up a website online that shows what quests are ideal to tackle at what level and apparently story stuff is for level 50+ wtf?? hell I couldn't even finish the tutorial missions because one had you level up to 4 and then the next wants you to kill a monster that the internet says you should be level 11 to attempt solo.  I'm having an alright time but I'm not into mmos to grind combat for dick measuring gear. hope it picks up as I go further into it.

A few years ago they made a change where there are grinding quests called Fields of Valor. Near all the grind spots is a little book, just talk to that and you'll get a quest to grind a specific mob in that area. Then you just do those quests on repeat til 50 in various areas around the world.

Remember that the game was never meant to be attempted solo so a lot of stuff will have high level requirements if you are playing the game on your own.

FFXI is a fun nostalgia trip but it definitely is a reminder of the bad parts of old, pre-WoW MMOs

It's been ten minutes, man. Are you wasting precious real life time you could be spending as a violet long-eared warrior?! Think of all the fun you're missing out on!

Edit: OH OF COURSE, 20 seconds too late. Dammit. :maf

I'm currently fighting the hankering for two diametrically opposed MMOs: Ryzom and PSO2. Not even PSO. No, the flaming train wreck that is post-Hero PSO2. And Ryzom is just ten kinds of odd.
(Also, I should really reinstall Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2. And PoE. And I wanted to give Torchlight 2 another go in remembrance - although that one isn't a MMO. I wonder how my World of Warships account is faring?)

...And I have no time for any sort of MMO or other time sink game right now. Damn it all. It's the grind. The grind is calling me. Help.

nah I've been playing 14 for years. i love it; it mostly plays like one giant single player rpg series, but with the ability to be social. it's a ton of fun although I'll say the expansions are a lot better than the base game.

but I did just start playing ff11 a week ago. got a pc recently so I figured I'd play the only ff i haven't tried. the beginning is suuuuper rough and the clumsy ui is only made worse by 15 years of bloat and a trillion currencies. still seems fun tho so I'll stick with it.

So, is FF11 still pay to play and still such a major pain in the arse to set up and use?

My first impression of FF11 was at a friends' house a couple of years ago. After fucking around with the account on a separate and very convoluted site that somehow nonetheless felt really barebones at the same time, for what felt like ages, we installed the damn game and spent a day downloading a metric shitton of patches, and afterwards battled some play online email crapola. Finally we were ready, if already rather unmotivated. Then he started the game, navigated to the character create section and made a beeline for the catgirl. Of fucking course. Then again, the other choice was little gnome or ugly chunk of beefcake. Who the fuck wants to play humans, they don't count.

The catgirl then proceeded to do "cute" poses in pretty much underwear in some sort of demo reel before we spent another eternity while trying to find a name that wasn't already taken or otherwise unavailable.

Rolled a black Mage, I think. Spent like a hundred million years in the starter city walking around and battling menus, desperately trying to grok the controls, game flow and special vocabulary. Walked out of the city and got immediately ravaged up the bum by some crazy fish thing. Respawned, learned how to survive the crazy fish thing, walked like ten more steps, got ravaged up the bum by some goblin thing. Rinse and repeat. We stopped when we started getting ravaged up the bum at some old mine area I think. It was weirdly addictive, in a masochistic way.

The first few hours in that game were rough as fuck. Is it still that shitty for a newb?

(But seriously, that catgirl doing poses in the "advertisement reel" was weiiiiiird.)

(Weeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiird.)

i bought that the game in july and only got it running a week ago, to tell you how much of a pain in the ass it is. the game still uses a separate program to adjust graphic and control settings ffs. my early experience has been similar; i still haven't explored all of the gigantic first town, and i've been killing weak enemies in the two maps directly outside of town because that's all i can handle. i doesn't take to long to level, but i still am taking my time because the menus and gameflow are so clunky.
