Another one.

I need to know the name of the original song of this, had it in my head all day...
it sounds like some mid 90s britpop, i.e. Sugababes, Girls Aloud, D*ream...

Berlin (AP) -- Germany on Friday shut down half of the six nuclear plants it still has in operation, a year before the country draws the final curtain on its decades-long use of atomic power.

...

Some in Germany have called for the decision on ending the use of nuclear power to be reconsidered because the power plants already in operation produce relatively little carbon dioxide. Advocates of atomic energy argue that it can help Germany meet its climate targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

But the German government said this week that decommissioning all nuclear plants next year and then phasing out the use of coal by 2030 won’t affect the country’s energy security or its goal of making Europe's biggest economy “climate neutral” by 2045.

...

Germany's remaining three nuclear plants — Emsland, Isar and Neckarwestheim — will be powered down by the end of 2022.

While some jobs will be lost, utility company RWE said more than two-thirds of the 600 workers at its Gundremmingen nuclear power station will continue to be involved in post-shutdown operations through to the 2030s. Germany's nuclear power companies will receive almost $3 billion for the early shutdown of their plants.

Environment Minister Steffi Lemke has dismissed suggestions that a new generation of nuclear power plants might prompt Germany to change course yet again.

“Nuclear power plants remain high-risk facilities that produce highly radioactive atomic waste,” she told the Funke media group this week.

I mean, Pope Francis chose an imaginary sky fairy over kids...

Edit: Holy shit, the quotes in that article just make me angry.

Quote
The Pope's comments came as he was discussing parenthood during a general audience at the Vatican in Rome.

"Today ... we see a form of selfishness," he told the audience. "We see that some people do not want to have a child.

"Sometimes they have one, and that's it, but they have dogs and cats that take the place of children

Imagine a guy who is the head of an organisation that excludes women and whose members take a vow of celibacy discussing parenthood?

Get fucked

Episode 17 of the Boris and Carrie need money for their fancy flat refurbishment show.

If you're just joining us, they got a big """loan""" from a Tory Peer, which was never disclosed.

When asked, Boris said "didn't know he was involved, soz".

When asked how come then an investigation found Whatsapp messages from him to said peer asking for "more money", the answer then became "well I thought he was managing the thing, not paying himself".

And now:

The prime minister has apologised for attending a drinks party in Downing Street's garden during lockdown in May 2020.

Here's what he said:

Mr Speaker, I want to apologise. I know that millions of people across this country have made extraordinary sacrifices over the last 18 months. I know the anguish that they have been through - unable to mourn their relatives, unable to live their lives as they want or do the things they love. And I know the rage they feel with me and with the government I lead, when they think that in Downing Street itself the rules are not being properly followed by the people who make the rules."

And though I cannot anticipate the conclusions of the current inquiry I have learned enough to know there were things we simply did not get right and I must take responsibility. Number 10 is a big department with the garden as an extension of the office - which has been in constant use because of the role of fresh air in stopping the virus. And when I went into that garden just after six on the 20th of May 2020, to thank groups of staff before going back into my office 25 minutes later to continue working, I believed implicitly that this was a work event."

But, Mr Speaker, with hindsight I should have sent everyone back inside, I should have found some other way to thank them and I should have recognised that even if it could be said technically to fall within the guidance, there would be millions and millions of people who simply would not see it that way. People who suffered terribly - people who were forbidden from meeting loved ones at all, inside or outside. And to them and to this house I offer my heartfelt apologies. And all I ask is that Sue Gray be allowed to complete her inquiry into that day and several others so that the full facts can be established."

The decision, confirmed by government sources, was briefed to the media as part of a range of measures designed to shore up public support for Boris Johnson after he has faced calls to resign as prime minister.
Quote
The government has repeatedly criticised the corporation’s news output, claiming it is biased against the government and linking negative coverage of the prime minister to the licence fee negotiations.

The BBC has faced repeated deep real-terms spending cuts since the start of the Tory-Liberal Democrat coalition government in 2010, with the Conservatives forcing the broadcaster to pay for free licences for the over-75s – then blaming it when they took the benefit away.

I suspect the reason the tories aren't pushing him out now is because they all (most probably) have a cheeky broken lockdown rules scandal that can be used against them too. Let Bozza take it up the arse from the press until the panny calms down, hope no one cares anymore in 6 months then knife him over his next scandal (there will be one).

Meanwhile on the eastern front, the Canadians are sending special forces to Ukraine and the UK is scrambling to deliver anti-tank missiles and other military aid to Ukraine.
However the Germans no longer allow the UK to use their air space for such weapon shipments. The German foreign minister is now in Moscow in a last bid to get the Russians back to the negotiating table.

Meanwhile Russia has moved its troops into Belarus for 'drills' , Sweden has mobilized and Dutch warships are en route and some have already arrived in the Baltic to back up our allies there.

It just keeps escalating with no end in sight.
The Russians can strike Kiev from Belarus now that they've moved their forces there and the Russian fleet is heading towards the Baltic.
The UK shipped about a 1000 anti-tank missiles to Ukraine in response.

The UK parliament is my favorite. In all these countries they worry about the tone of debate, no one is allowed to laugh or clap and they lose their shit when someone shouts.
And in the UK it's just a bunch of mostly middle aged men yelling, stamping, clamping and hollering. HEAR HEAR!

The reality of the situation is that Putin can only keep his best units patrolling the border regions until boredom sets in and he has to replace them with fresh troops again.
The Russians need to supply and feed divisions moved from the far east of Russia to Belarus stationed within 10 miles of Ukraine in sparsely populated areas.

And the longer the Russians wait to take action, the stronger Ukraine will have been reinforced by NATO, making it harder for Russia to achieve its strategic objectives without huge losses.

Ukraine is not a member of NATO.
The UK is flying in anti-tank missiles and more states such as the US, Canada and the Netherlands are providing arms and support.
NATO countries are reinforcing Ukraine except for Germany.

But as the post above this one shows, the Germans are able to look past the machinations of the Americans and the sabre rattling of the Russians and understand why Russia is lashing out towards the west.
The Russians fear the Chinese more than we do and are even less prepared to defend against China or defend their sattelites and allies against China. After all they will be the closest target now that NATO has pulled out of Afghanistan.

The Germans have been signaling to the Russians all week with various proposals on trade, technology and energy: forget about the Americans and their sanctions and ally with us
https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/germany-offers-cooperation-renewables-defuse-tensions-with-russia-2022-01-21/

What Germany has in production capacity they lack in raw materials. They currently rely on the Dutch ports for imports but our infrastructure can hardly keep up with demand.
Imagine if all the modern economies of Europe had access to what ammounts to an infinite supply of raw materials. Materials they currently sell to China because of sanctions.

I think we're at a turning point here. Either Russia picks war and gets picked apart by the vultures or they come to their senses and ally with Germany to rebuilt the Panzer Corps this time not to capture Moscow but to defend it.

According to NATO the only deployments in Ukraine are British training officers. Ukraine buying arms from other countries as is normal is not NATO support.
