80 years ago, you folks probably would have been Hitler-appeasers arguing against intervention.
Because deposing fascists to prevent genocide (or ecocide) apparently is fascism, too, or something.

Who will lead this invasion? The US? The UN? NATO?
Let's just assume Russia and China agree to a US led military intervention, how many people are you willing to sacrifice? :lol

If people really cared about the Amazon Rain Forest, they would just buy massive amounts of land for more money than destroying it brings in.

I had lite eco-fascist feelings, encouraged by the circumstances (living somewhere where pinning environmental issues on China by people with big consumption is norm), but realized maybe harassing foreign nations for effectively outsourced pollution is unfair. That and even the plastics stat I bought into I now have second thoughts given the trade of wastes is a big thing and maybe the supposed plastics responsible nations need to settle the fuck down.

* a bunch of IMF and NATO guys in a room somewhere *

Guy 1: We must depose Jair Bolsonaro. He is doing too good of a job at crushing social democratic opposition.
Guy 2: Yes, yes... He is making it too easy for us to get access to territory in the Amazon for mining and agricultural purposes... Yes...
Guy 3: So we're in agreement then. We will arm and fund leftist rebels helmed by largely indigenous populations to storm Brasília and institute environmental reform even though it directly contradicts our economic interests. Guy 4 already has the media push ready. All in favor?

Guys: Accord *snaps fingers*

This is unironically beautiful.

its a bummer that twitter really killed off godwin's law, no one respects the tenets of internet etiquette anymore

You kind of invoked Godwin's law yourself when you trollingly equated population growth control and eugenics (I know, Galton, but close enough). ;)

"Donald! There's an environmental disaster brewing in Brazil. Jair must stop illegal Amazon logging before we can no longer save the Trump Doral from a flood.... I would send Rudy but..."

"Don't worry Jared. I'll call that Bolsodrunko and get him to stop. He loves me. We're like the Blues Brothers but better"

"Jayhere? Jayhere? Can you hear me?  How's the wife, you still cheating? .... I'm sorry honey, don't cry. he still loves you probably.... put your husband on the phone now please"

"Look you have to stop logging amazons I understand they might be a 7 or an 8 but really it's bad for the environment. I enjoyed Wonder Woman a lot too but Jared says you really need to stop before something bad happens. We can't let Bezos of the Fake News Amazon Post get away with it, Ok?"

"Mr. Trump? this is Mr Bolsonaro housekeeper, I am very sorry, Mr Bolsonaro just fell down flight of stairs with glass of whiskey and really badly hurt"

Wasn't I clear before? Eugenics is nonsense, both scientifically and ethically. Population growth control is imperative for the survival of the species and planet.

The farthest I can get on board with eugenics tend to be for stamping out severe genetically inherited conditions.
Not sterilization just gene therapy, gene editing ideally.

It's a slippery slope. Eugenics is the idea that you can (and should) increase the "quality" (who decides what constitutes "quality"?) of the gene pool.
Of course you don't want anyone to suffer or die prematurely. On the other hand, you absolutely don't want tailor made humans.
And from an evolutionary perspective, you never know which mutation could lead to which other mutation in the future that could prove to be extremely beneficial (or even essential) for human survival. Eugenics effectively ends evolution and freezes us in time.

By the way, that's why Nazi racial theory is so dumb (aside from the fact that there are no separate human races): You want a diverse gene pool. You don't want a fucking monoculture where one single disease could wipe out the entire species.

Who preemptively went to war with Nazi Germany with the declared goal of deposing the Nazis for any reason, let alone to stop genocide?

Czechoslovakia: invaded
Poland: invaded
France: declared war over Poland, invaded
Britain: declared war over Poland, "invaded"
Soviet Union: invaded
United States: Germany declared war after ally attacked

Even Italy was more "in the way" than anything else.

Benjamin Griveaux, who served in Macron's cabinets and ran as the presidential party candidate in Paris for the mayor office (currently held by Socialists), rescinded his candidature after a masturbation video surfaced some days ago. The details are a bit murky, we don't know it's his dick (the media has decided on using "video of a sexual nature" without more details) but just leaving the race without a fight would suggest it is, that's something he sent to a woman he was consensually exchanging with reportedly (he's married), apparently it was leaked by a Russian "artist and activist" (he was arrested today for an alleged fight in a bar, he also tried to torch the facade of a bank to make a point some time ago) because he loathed the hypocrisy of the candidate. AFAIK it's not clear how he got ahold of the video.

Macron's party already had to contend with a dissident candidate (eccentric mathematician Villani) and polling indicates Griveaux was trailing behind incumbent Anne Hidalgo and the right-wing candidate Rachida Dati before the whole hubbub.

Punditry and media seem to fall squarely on the "unbecoming in a democracy, breach of privacy, mobs 2.0 are frightening" side of the argument.

French press have always (well not always, certainly since post war I guess) been very cautious (some might say slavishly deferential) with regards to the privacy of political figures. And honestly I would say most people here kinda shrug at most of that stuff. The potentially explosive bit of that dick video, IMHO, would be if it turned out the recipient wasn't as comfortable and consensual with it than currently assumed.
