Game Informer did a hands-on of the single player:

My immediate takeaway: I didn't want the demo to end. Although combat is the showpiece of this experience, I was equally engaged in the journey. We all know it eventually leads to Hell (which we’ll discuss in great detail in another story this Friday), but it looks like id is expanding upon the scope of the narrative in interesting ways, and through supporting characters that are new to this universe.

The combat feels great at this point, showing a nice level of polish and balancing along with the satisfying carnage. Doom is still Doom at its heart, but it also feels like a new experience in the first-person shooter category. I question if it will have the legs to support a full campaign, but the small slice I played was an absolute blast.

Also what is up with all the WUB WUB WUB WUB music.

There's some metal music in there. Why not do that for the whole trailer.

srsly

you're right, there's literally three seconds in the trailer where the guitars stop to play a sound effect, this game is gonna blow

doesn't look all that great imo

wolfenstein managed to get bent into something neat, so I am hoping this will follow suit and not just settle for 'not-embarrassingly-bad' or whatever the obvious id-made, bethesda-supervised sequel to doom 3 would be.

Unless it's changed drastically in the past 6-8 months: those are "style kills" nothing to do with QTEs really, and it's got a fast combat pace but there's nothing "on-rails" about it.

If Duke Nukem Forever can be considered a success by its publisher, then surely a new entry in the Doom franchise can at least sell reasonably well.

To clarify that more.  Wolfenstein worked because they reworked it into a Man in the High Castle, interesting story-heavy linear single player campaign that appealed to the modern FPS campaign crowd with a unique setting.

Here you are fighting skeleton's with mini-guns on their shoulders in what looks to be big room chaos arenas.  Looks more like Serious Sam than modern FPS campaigns and Serious Sam doesn't sell (beyond the hardcore niche it has for arena combat).  Also Doom combat from the monsters, to the weapons and shooting feel is just far far removed from what people want and are used to today, so any multiplayer will have about 5 mins of life.  If the game is actually good, it'll sell to a certain crowd and sell like Serious Sam games but maybe better initially because of the IP, but it's never gonna be a mainstream game while it's still DOOM.  When I heard the game got completely scrapped and remade after Wolfensteins success, I sort thought they were going to go in that New Order direction of rebooting the Doom franchise in modern trappings.  But this doesn't like Modern, this doesn't look classic Doom, this looks somewhere between and just feels like a game out of place from the footage shown far.

With DN Forever, a lot of people were just curious after all the years and hype trailers so they gave it a shot.

Rage was so anaemic. The locations and mechanics were great, but they didn't have enough content. When you get to the second HUB, you think you're gonna do more missions in all new areas, fight new types of enemies, maybe get a couple new weapons, but no, you're pretty much done. The ending is so abrupt and is such a bad sequel tease that it makes the game feel like a prologue. Such a shame.

I only ever played the racing part of it; by the time I installed it, it was the only place where I could just play with a couple friends in multi. The other servers were barren. So I played that mode a couple times, shrugged, and uninstalled it.

Doom 3 multiplayer beta is up on all the platforms.

Tried it on Xbox one. I kinda dig it although you can tell its not going to be popular on consoles because the mass market doesn't really like these kind of arena shooters. Not sure how it plays on PC. The GAF thread seemed to be very negative on it over there but unless it basically plays like a game from 1996 they are down on pretty much everything when it comes to shooters.

Not even. You can't do crazy Rocket 360 speeds or strafe jumps. It's literally Halo with a shorter TTK but longer than Call of Duties.

Ok, to me and what I want out of a Doom/Quake/UT style Arena shooter, this game sucks and I deleted it in 15 mins.  Here's all my issues:

1.  the damage is bullshit.  A rocket does like 40% HP damage hitting direct so like you sneak up right behind a guy and fucking rocket launcher him and instead of gibbing he just takes a little damage turns around and starts fighting you.  That feels really unsatisfying and stupid!  if you sneak up on someone and rocket them they should die, that's how these games work.

2.  The move speed is slow for a Quake/Doom/Arena style game.

3.  The FoV is too narrow

4.  The slower movement type animations like climbing a ledge a bit is totally unnecessary for a fast paced MP shooter

On the plus side, the music is kind of cool and does a good job of replicating the 90s Trent Reznor Quake soundtrack.  Also it's still nice to have more Old-school Arena shooters.  But the damage thing is a huge turn off.  Also weapon class builds are lame for an arena shooter wtf.

I watched Draqu_ (of Devil Dagger record fame) play for a bit. He made it look pretty good. He was zipping all over, trying to control the power-ups. He was mostly using the lightning gun to start, then finished people off with the shotgun or in melee.

i played a lot of it and it's not terrible to me but it's a long way from great. like bebpo said the damage is fucked and most fights come off as unsatisfying. and there needs to be an indicator for when u can kill people with melee  vs just pounding them because that fucked me over a lot. and good damn the character customization options are shit
