RPS has become SJW trash.
People assign too much value to what random folks say be that about social issues or just gameplay mechanics. To me the first part is former is for sure not a conversation to primarily discuss with randoms, and the latter you're also better served if you have a history with said person and know their tastes and dislikes. For example, that Oscar guy has fundamentally different views than me when it comes to iGaming, but when it comes to j-console gaming the divide shrinks. Knowing this I can use his analysis and apply it to my situation. Some random fuck on the net though? fuck off with this shit.

No wonder games journalist hate gamers. Gamers just want the number and don't care too much for all the verbiage. Kinda hurts the "I am a real writer" self-image of the media people. Poor dears, I hope lashing out at gamers at least makes them feel better.

I just dont get why videogames of all things needs to be a militant thing with so many feels tied up in it. It's a hobby, enjoy it, leave it, try and change it, whatever but try and do so within the framework of 'it's a hobby'. why get buttfrustretingly mad at all this shit. Leave that for when your work goes through 'restructure' or your girlfriend sucks a couple of dicks on the side :hitler

sometimes?

It's not the net but people in general FROM MY EXPERIENCE. You just get to hear what everyone is thinking online.

Not a lot of people seem capable of combining empathy and critical thinking at once. It's like once they have one they turn off the other.

I don't really like Aeana because she annoyed me greatly on twatter once. I prolly should get over it, but my time is precious so I wont go and spend time on a potential 'friendship' that prolly will be a lot of too heated arguments.

Still however, Aeana isnt close to being the worst mod on neogaf, there are truly trash level people on there at the moment, but she isnt one of them.

it's the other side to the group calling everyone "social justice warriors" if they even so much as hint they don't think Anita deserves rape threats for talking about vidya.

basically anyone who is not 100% against discussing the topic of women in gaming gets labeled a SJW, and on the other side, anyone who is not 100% against discussing the topic of the issues with video game media gets labeled an MRA.  how these two valid things became tangled together is beyond me, neither side is interested in a discussion, and it's part of why this whole thing is such a shitstorm.

Games were "boys' toys" for a long time, but now that males are in the minority of players, it's probably time to start thinking about how to add some rom-com to our currently all-stallone diet.

Jesus I forgot how much of a circle jerk SA is sometimes. I feel like I should stop talking about games online, period. Every time I do someone gets personally offended and calls me names, tells me to fuck off, to suck their "throbbing phallus", that it's not good to smoke crack before posting, or says I have a stick up my ass just because I don't like the same game they do.

Yeah, I think I'm done talking about them. I quit. It sucks because it's really the only outlet I have where I can talk about them, unfiltered, but people always take it personal when we're talking about fucking video games. Don't know where to go from here, but I'm done with the internet gaming community. I realize my opinions can often be strong, but that's no excuse for a lack of tact and insulting me as a person. This always happens and I'm sick of it, and it won't end unless I stop because my views never really go with the grain, and constantly clash. Talking about games has become very, very unfun for me, for what should be a fun outlet of expression.

It's not just gaf. For me it is everywhere. Especially now that I am marching more and more towards identifying as a casual gamer. Posting about games is pointless; especially if you play of enjoy games casually. There's really no place for me to talk about the games I like, and the games I don't like are often guarded by a mass of fanboys. I've had some fun over the years but it definitely feels like a good time to hang it up. When only two games shown at Tokyo game show interest you, what's the point in continuing to talk about games? You are at that point, so lapsed, that remotely talking about games comes off as forced and it comes a time for you to pick a new hobby.

At this point, I generally only talk about games I like or games I played I didn't like. And I try to keep it almost on a technical/design level. Those are the only real video game conversations I engage in anymore.

The industry pontificating/navel gazing stuff that GAF is all over I dropped a while back. That sort of stuff just invites crazy people and the worst kind of nerds.

iirc I mentioned this once before here but a year or so ago I was in line at target and this 20 something dude a couple people in front of me was getting a vita game. whatever, no big deal. as it so happens, that game was persona 4 arena. checkout guy says something to the effect of 'Oh, I've heard about this one'.

This is where things when horribly wrong. Dude not only launches into the gameplay system of arena, but goes into the gameplay mechanics of persona 4 itself, and how it differs from earlier persona games, gives specific 'cool' examples of these mechanics (something about mixing ice gems or whatever), and does so for a couple minutes while the clearly regretful dude uhuh's and nod's while helping other customers.

I can't really relate to that. In my experience the people who tend to discuss that kind of stuff are more about a good debate or good opinion expressed. But then I don't post over at SA. Anyone who has played a good amount of any game and offers some deeper insight, I always appreciate it, even if I don't necessarily agree with them.

The way some people get offended when you state you don't think a game is as good as most people think it is, you'd think you insulted their mother or wished death upon their family or something, I'm not much a gamer nowadays ( I don't think I ever was tbh) so I find the whole thing amusing.

Stuff like this is fine on a videogame forum but yeah in real life especially with casuals, its pretty obnoxious. It's like me recommending a movie but going into a written essay format about it instead of just talking about it like a normal person. I always judge the audience. And if they are casual I speak about casual things. I don't nerd out to casuals about things whether its movies, books, TV, or games because casuals don't give a shit. Which is perfectly normal. There are some things any individual is nerdy about. It could be cars, sports, tools, etc. Its more about not boring people who don't care about that stuff with all my nerd talk. And leaving the nerd talk to people who are also into it at that level.

To be fair I think that happens with a lot of things. People are often desperate for you to confirm their tastes. What I notice is that nerds are not careful with the language. So they have no problem calling somebody an idiot who doesn't share their tastes not realizing that is a pretty offensive thing to say about a difference of opinion about a videogame.

Videogames - I discuss them with a Norwegian guy I've known for 8 years, a japanese girl I've known 9 years, Irish girl,  a norwegian girl that lives in japan, a puerto rican guy i've known 5 years, my best friends IRL (4 dudes and a chick) and my brother (and the fucks I work for since I do work for a gaming company somewhat)
Anime - Same norwegian girl, same japanese girl, same norwegian girl, Irish girl and recently the puerto rican.

I guess my circles are very closed off is what I'm saying. I've always felt I can discuss anything with Oscar and Wrath on here though, and Himu, we've had some great comic talks.

It's probably very fucked up of me to keep my friends circle so tiny, but yeah I dont really need the hassle.

hmmm.... Maybe I guess I'm missing it then. I mean I sometimes attack people on the gaming side, but its mainly when I feel they are agenda posting or being lazy. A good well thought out honest post based on actual genuine playtime, may still be wrong, and I might point out why I think its wrong, but I try not to be a dick about it.

Sometimes people post "X sucks dick!" without really explaining or backing up that opinion and that can annoy me slightly and bring out my bitchy side.

Sometimes I come close to mentioning games and catch myself and remember I'm not a gamer :heh

I locked myself out of the house a couple weeks ago. The front door has a deadlock, but there's a side door on the garage that is a simple lock. So I used a paperclip to lockpick it, got inside the garage, and luckily the house door in there was unlocked. I was telling this to a 40something coworker and he was like "how did you learn how to pick locks?"

Almost mentioned my lockpicking/thief level in Skyrim in jest.

Instead I just said I saw how to do it by watching The Wire

This is where things when horribly wrong. Dude not only launches into the gameplay system of arena, but goes into the gameplay mechanics of persona 4 itself, and how it differs from earlier persona games, gives specific 'cool' examples of these mechanics (something about mixing ice gems or whatever), and does so for a couple minutes while the clearly regretful dude uhuh's and nod's while helping other customers.

I wanted to go home and burn all of my videogames :brazilcry

Yeah, years ago when I drove a taurus sho, which is a nice car I have no complaints there, I would every so often get stopped at a gas station by some random dude who would go into great detail about all the mods I should do to it,  etc etc. apparently it was a car with some weird subculture fanbase attached.

I just bought it cuz it looked cool :yeshrug

The best video game related discussions I've had were never on the internet. It's always been with friends and acquaintances that I know in meat space.

I could just imagine what it would be like if someone went all uber-fantard in real life. The person would be looked down upon as an unbending special fellow and would be ostracized instantly.
iirc I mentioned this once before here but a year or so ago I was in line at target and this 20 something dude a couple people in front of me was getting a vita game. whatever, no big deal. as it so happens, that game was persona 4 arena. checkout guy says something to the effect of 'Oh, I've heard about this one'.
