This game has the most boring unlockable characters in the series. Bunch of returning characters, clones of existing characters, Bowser Jr. and the Duck Hunt dog.  I don't even know why some of the locked characters STILL have to be unlocked at this point in the series.  :beli

I hate unlocking characters in any game, especially multiplayer titles.  I want to get in there and play, not sit there fighting the CPU before I can actually get to try everyone out.

The Wii U version is out!

You start with more characters available, but still have to unlock a good amount of them.  Same rules as 3DS apply, so if you do 100 battles total, you'll get everyone.

Online is much better than on the 3DS version.  Still got some matches with awful lag/freezes, but most matches I tried were pretty smooth.  The "board game" like mode is fucking terrible.  Makes the 3DS exclusive "adventure" mode look 100 times better in comparison.  But I got this for multi so I don't care.  Speaking of which, 8-man smash is offline only.

I preordered yesterday afternoon and picked 1-day/release-day shipping with a Friday estimated arrival date. I obviously knew it was impossible but went with it. When Amazon changed the delivery to Saturday, I contacted support, got a shipping refund and a one-month extension to my Prime subscription. :lol :bow

Now I'm trying to determine whether it's worth hunting down a Gamecube controller adapter (very rare, $20) and a Smash Edition GC controller ($30) or just go ahead an buy a Wii U Pro Controller ($50, much more useful?).

Based on my experience with the 3DS controller I wouldn't want to play this game on anything but a GameCube one. I got the bundle with that and the adapter tho

I really regret not biting that bundle. I think you save $10 with it.

The limited support of the GC controller is still a concern, tho.

yeah, I'm thinking about picking up the hori gamecube-style controller whenever I get smash bros.  seems like it's a wii classic controller pro in a gamecube shell, with all the pros and cons of it.

I don't intend to do much local multiplayer so I don't know how much use I'd get out of the adapter.

The Pro Controller is fantastic and obviously will be more useful since you can use it with a lot of Wii U games.  The battery life is also fantastic.  I typically don't use the Wii U controller -it's so big and clunky- unless I'm doing off-screen play, which only happens here and there.  I use the Pro Controller almost all the time.  It works great with Smash -actually can't even say I had a problem with the the Wii U controller when I used it a little while ago- and I can't even imagine playing something like Bayonetta without it.

Played a bit online but was hitting some lag... not brawl levels of unplayable but still pretty bad. I'm hoping it gets ironed out soon... how's the lag for everyone else? (I was playing against randoms "for fun").

Also, this is the game Brawl should've been. Add me - tiesto643

Have had mostly good connections and pretty smooth game play.  If you're getting lag, get out of the game you're in....someone playing has a shitty connection.  You might want to try going with a wired setup too.

Will add you.  I keep forgetting what my Nintendo ID is.  I think lyteedge.

I've had some bad matches, but I'd say most are pretty good. Mind you, I only play 1v1 online, so I don't know how it holds up in four player Smash. Also, I bought a LAN adapter in this game just because I wanted to mitigate lag and was worried after all my time spent on the 3DS version that the Wi-Fi related problems might persist on the Wii U as well.

I've been about 50/50. Played mostly friend matches on Friday that were bad. Some For Glory matches on Saturday were pretty good. Then some friend matches Sunday that was fantastic. Then some friend matches Monday that were absolutely terrible.

Seems to be up and down.

I still have yet to play the 3DS or Wii U versions with anyone on my friends lists.   :lol  At least you can message someone on Wii U...too bad there's no indication that you've received one.   :dizzy  Got a "let's race" message for Mario Kart that I realized had been sent to me like two months earlier the last time I checked.

Come to think of it, I think I played SSF4 a few times with people on my friends list, at the 3DS launch, and then one game of RE The Mercenaries with a friend, and that was it.  I remember playing Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom on the Wii with people because they'd message me on Xbox Live and we'd set the games up.   :lol

None of my IRL friends have a 3DS.  Hell, at this point none of my IRL friends are ever really online playing anything.   There are some people at work who like to play, but they are never online and just play Brawl in the break room.   The company ordered Smash Wii U for us so I'll probably play locally if I get the chance to.  I usually never play with anyone because I don't want to touch the controllers they have there.  Way too many people here don't wash their hands.   :yuck  I can bring my 3DS and use it as a controller to get around that.

True. We need confirmation from a second source.

I guess I didn't register?  No idea.

You had to buy both versions and register them both on Club Nintendo before like, March 31.

Since I linked the eShops with my Club Nintendo account and bought the download versions, it was done automatically for me. :pimp

Snake was in four games on Nintendo platforms (five counting the Konami Smash Bros. knock-off that came out before Brawl) and The Twin Snakes was a Nintendo joint with Konami and LOLOL Silicon Knights.

Now look at Street Fighter.  There's 2010 on NES which shouldn't even be counted, then the SNES games and GB ports...and the only recent thing was SSF4 3D Edition in 2011.  But whatever.  I'm down for Ryu.

Street Fighter 2010 doesn't count.  Ryu is not even in the game!  I'm talking Street Fighter, not crossover games.  There's SF games on SNES, GB, GBA, and 3DS.  That's it.  It's not a game series that instantly springs to mind when you think "Nintendo" and hasn't been since the 16-bit days...and it was multi-platform back then, too.

...Until Sega exited the console business and shitted Sonic games out like crazy, especially for the Nintendo platforms.  Sega got out the console biz what...15 years ago already?  None of that matters.

Namco went crazy with releases.  I'd say that's a well-represented character.  Plus...Namco played a large part in developing Smash.

What are we even arguing about? :P

All I'm saying is Ryu is not a strange choice for Smash after the other third-party characters.

The only reason he's weird is it would give Capcom two spots on the roster, when common thought was that each third-party was limited to just one.
