Smash Some Bros. On 3DS And Wii U!
« on: September 09, 2014, 10:22:00 PM »
The game comes out in Japan on Saturday and there's a demo up now on the J-eShop!

Anyone else try it?  I'm really impressed with how damn good the game looks and performs.  Stays 60 FPS 99% of the time (there's some slowdown sometimes with certain assist characters) and the action is very easy to see.

The demo lets you play as Mario, Pikachu, Link, Villager, and Rockman.  I like Rockman the best; he's got moves from MM1-3 and lots of NES sound effects.  Also marked out when I saw that Villager's Up+B move gives him/her the balloons from Balloon Fight.

It's time like this I really wish I own a Japanese 3DS, haha. I can wait, but I just hope NA gets a demo too. I've been watching a stream of the Japanese demo and it looks pretty fun. Although a bit slowish on the side (but nowhere near Brawl), but it looks less so with more than 2 fighters.

Mega Man and Miis (for the whole customizing feature) are my most looked forward to characters. Can't wait to see what's in store for the rest of the roster once the game releases in Japan!

Mega Man is a-d-o-r-a-b-l-e, and Villager is the only one out of two characters who I like to use.  Otherwise, it's not for me.  I haven't played a Smash since Smash 64 and I'm trying to put my finger on what it is about it that I don't like.

At least they put out a demo for me to see what the fuss is all about but I don't really see what there is to make a fuss about.  It feels so slow.  Like everyone else said: it's a party game, not so much a fighter (so, I guess a party fighter).  It's an arena brawler and one that's designed for everyone to be able to touch it, so there isn't a ton to get used to, so it's not for me I think.  It's more than likely better with other people, but I'm old and I have no time to coordinate MP anymore so I'm not going to bother.

The demo has me mostly convinced that the production values are good and that it runs well as a single-player game (who knows how it is online or in local MP).  But it definitely didn't sell me.  I'm not going to bother buying it or the Wii U version because it didn't do a good job of even making me care about the IP despite everyone continuously telling me that it's oh-so-good (so at this point, I'll just quit paying attention when it comes to Smash talk because it just isn't for me and I haven't wanted to hear about it for a while now).  I guess I have to reiterate that I just don't get it.  Outside of Nintendo characters and the game itself being a reunion fighter akin to Dissidia only with less depth, I guess what appeals to people is the arena-style brawler gameplay (ex: limited movesets, less combo focus (which is interesting in the case of the villager who does have a small combo focus), arena traversal, etc).  The gameplay style isn't for me at all and it's too slow for my tastes.  So the demo saved me a couple of bucks.

tl;dr: haven't played a smash game in years, game feels boring when you're not playing with other people, it's not really my type of thing after some evaluation, production values are gud, but outside of being a reunion nintendo ip i don't get it

It's one of those cases where I'm not sure if I'm the one in the wrong for not liking something that everyone tells me that I'm supposed to like, but whatever.  It makes me feel uncomfortable, but this is more like a case where it doesn't jive well.

SpeedStats, I see no problems with you disliking the game! I mean there's no shame in that as there is never a video game that appeals to literally everyone. You should like what you enjoy, not what you don't enjoy.

Absolutely nothing aside from a mode or two.

There's always DLC in the cards I guess.

Still very weird how they constantly tease Ridley in that Pryosphere stage. You would think they'd show us the boss by now... really suspecious  :lol

Dude who sits next to me at work was watching a stream the entire day yesterday.  Saw a lot of stuff.  There doesn't seem to be a lot of room on the character select screen for more than one DLC character, if they go that route, unless they're going to hide them off-screen or make the portraits that much smaller.

But DLC would be no surprise.  It's in Mario Kart and Hyrule Warriors...so why not this too?
