IGA decided to go with 2.5D for this project for both financial and artistic reasons. All decisions in game development involve trade-offs, and for Bloodstained a 2.5D world built on Unreal Engine 4 was the right choice to balance development time, graphical fidelity, budget, and scope.

2.5D tho :-\

After Might No 9 I'm not sure I have enough faith in 2.5D Kickstarters anymore...

When I started reading the ks page they were at 39k, now it's 121. $28 is kind of high for just the game but still, more uh I guess we're supposed to call it Igavania now.

I'm sure it'll look fine and UE4 is a good engine.  What's more important is that it plays well, which hopefully it does.

I don't think its that low budget a game. The pitch video said that they have partners that'll provide funding, but they wanted to see what the community reaction would be first, hence the kickstarter.

Funding (and likely blowing through a couple of stretch goals) in a day is probably enough of a reaction.

Edit: Yup, only 10% of the game is backer-funded. The rest is done by publishers. https://twitter.com/personasama/status/597875118052745218

I have no doubt in my mind that if Konami allowed him, Iga would've made Metroidvania's on the consoles (read: non-Nintendo handheld) beyond that multiplayer PSN/XBLA title.

Harmony of Despair during its heyday was a blast. Broken Somas everywhere that could glitch through everything with his souls all while spamming Muramasa and Claimh Solais +1, Shanoas grinding spells for all eternity cause fuck spell levels but beastly once they actually got anywhere, Alucards acting like they were as good as Soma with Valmanway +1, all the Belmonts pretending they were any good.  :rejoice

It was pretty much a pseudo MMO with all the grind that went on. Also, the PS3 version never got the final patch that actually fixed Maria, so its possible to buy a DLC character that's 100% useless.  :lol

Well, I wasn't going to buy Maria anyway. I just want to go through it due to it being a console Metroidvania. But if it's grind-city, I dunno...  :-\

Re: Sword Or Whip = Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night
« Reply #100 on: May 12, 2015, 01:25:16 AM »
Its grind-city only if you have the masochistic compulsion to get every single thing in the game/try to clear Hard mode/do DLC stages. Otherwise, it's stll a fun romp, though very obviously designed to be played with multiple people at once. It's pretty neat seeing how they ripped all the different character's mechanics straight out of their respective games, like Soma having a different soul for every single enemy, Shanoa absorbing spells that enemies cast and using her floaty anti-gravity rings, etc.

There's only like six maps/chapters in the base game, with like one or two extra maps that used to be DLC in the 360 version, two difficulties to each.

Edit: Bloodstained broke another stretch goal and is on course for hitting local co-op. Ain't stopping this train.

Alright, I'll kickstart this game, sure.

While I wait, what's the best Gameboy Advance / ds / 3ds Castlevania... looking for action rpg ala Symphony of the Night, mainly.  Amazon has em all pretty cheap when I checked earlier.

All of them post Aria of Sorrow. The one... GBA one before that is pretty weak, IMO. But the rest are all rock solid. Aria and Dawn of Sorrow will be a little grindy with the soul drop rate, but you don't really need to grind souls to beat the game. Same with Portrait and Order.

Play Circle of the Moon, it's a fantastic tribute to CV and one of the better Metroidvania's.

Skip Harmony of Dissonance.

Play Aria of Sorrow. It's second best to SOTN.

Skip Dawn, it's not as good as Aria and a broken, easy mess. It sucks balls aside from Julius mode.

Play Portrait of Ruin, it fucking owns.

Skip Order of Ecclesia, it is mediocrity incarnate despite good ideas.

I’m interested in an actual IGAvania, but I’m not willing to fund more Kickstarters out of the blue, I’d rather just buy the game. KS isn’t an investment, it’s purchasing something that /might/ ship.

Alright, I'll kickstart this game, sure.

While I wait, what's the best Gameboy Advance / ds / 3ds Castlevania... looking for action rpg ala Symphony of the Night, mainly.  Amazon has em all pretty cheap when I checked earlier.

Aria Of Sorrow is the best GBA 'Vania.  It was the last one released and is a sequel, of sorts, to Symphony Of The Night, taking place in the year 2016 IIRC.  Also has a fun plot twist.  You can pretty much skip Harmony Of Dissonance.  Circle Of The Moon has the best music out of the three GBA games, but doesn't look as good visually and the level design is just OK.  It pretty much screams "launch title game," which it was.

Dawn Of Sorrow on DS is a direct sequel to Aria Of Sorrow where you play as the same main character.  There's also a cool bonus mode where you play as three other characters, including SOTN Alucard, in a nod to Castlevania III.  Portrait Of Ruin's gimmick is that you play as two characters at once.  Its setting is during WW2 and it's actually a follow-up to the Genesis Castlevania Bloodlines.  It's not bad and worth playing if you want more 'Vania.  There's also bonus characters to play as (most of these games have extra characters) including Richter and Maria from Dracula X!  Finally, Order Of Ecclesia was the last 'Vania released from IGA.  I didn't get as far in this one and need to go back.  It's still a Metroidvania but has multiple smaller areas.  You play as a female who uses magic instead of weapons, but the magic functions exactly like weapons would.

Would highly recommend Aria Of Sorrow on GBA.  It's the second best Igavania after SOTN, IMO, and would surpass it if given put on the same visual/audio level as the PSX game.

Skip the other Castlevanias that came after these titles.  Mercury Stream  :yuck
