Update - ESPN Statement on Curt Schilling: “At all times during the course of their engagement with us, our commentators are directly linked to ESPN and are the face of our brand. We are a sports media company. Curt’s actions have not been consistent with his contractual obligations nor have they been professionally handled; they have obviously not reflected well on the company. As a result, he will not appear on ESPN through the remainder of the regular season and our Wild Card playoff game.”

Fox News Channel is parting ways – again – with Bob Beckel, the co-host of its primetime program, “The Five.”

“Bob Beckel was terminated today for making an insensitive remark to an African-American employee,” the network said in a statement.

"Insensitive remark", meaning:
Quote
Douglas Wigdor, an attorney who represents several current and former employees who have alleged racial discrimination at Fox News in a lawsuit, said he is representing the employee who complained about Beckel. In a statement, Wigdor alleged Beckel “stormed out of his office” when an African-American information-technology employee came to service his computer, “telling our client that he was leaving his office because he was black.”

Honestly I'm surprised that ABC actually showed some balls. I thought they would handwave it away via apology like all her other dog whistle stuff.

I would say it would be hard to defend that after going so hard after Michelle Wolf, but working past cognitive dissonance is a first lesson in any good political cult

Roseanne coming back 20~ years later, being super-popular, and then being cancelled after the first season because of a tweet feels like such an obvious plotline in retrospect.

I'm a bit cynical so I would suspect the straw that broke it all was simply the fact that writers started up and quitting, with more expected to follow, and there was a pretty swift mobilization of negative PR mounting.

Yeah I suppose. Not saying I'm unhappy about it. Just surprised me a little they were so quickly decisive.

Tbf the show itself wasn't super racist, it has roseanne defending a muslim family and a kid who's obviously not subscribing to gender norms. But as usual the revival wasn't very funny if at all and felt unnatural in most of it's acting and delivery. So can't say I'm sad to see it go.

Roseanne is crazy af and should probably get help but won't. What I'm wondering now if the peeps who greenlit bringing back Last Man Standing started having doubts.

Nah. Tim Allen is a drug dealing snitch, not a racist.

I mean the first person that wanted to revival is Sarah Gilbert, not Roseanne herself. So... if the writers/staff are like "yeah, that's a bridge too far for me" the only one that loses a steady paycheck is Gilbert (well that and the rest of the cast/crew, but you know what I mean)

Or a business's right to restrict expression about silent protests during the national anthem.

Though honestly, even Fox News is calling her racist(though we shall see come the Hannity/Tucker hour).

The barrier on the Fox News right seems to be veiled comments that are at least narrowly open to interpretation. Then they can spin it and call the left the thought police for suggesting it is racist, then make it a whole rallying cause about free speech. Not much room for nuance left on this one.

I liked the original show but I had zero interest in the reboot. Just wasn't gonna bother watching a show with her in the lead as her personae now would effect my ability to buy into whatever the show was trying to go for. I don't buy her defending muslims on the show when she spends her time on twitter attacking those same people. It all feels self serving and phony, and you can say that about a lot of hollywood but in this case, it felt too close to something real.

I want to mention this because I also saw in posts in the dumpster thread from the Reset thread. And I don't want you guys getting trapped like they are because you're cool horsefuckers.

Roseanne's openly a Trump supporter (I think they may have some history as acquaintances/friends/circles/etc.), but she's not "right-wing" in any kind of traditional/Fox sense or even a Trumpian sense, she's a batshit crazy bankster's vaccines cause chemtrails that did 9/11 conspiracy leftist type. She ran for President with Cindy Sheehan as VP, on the Peace and Freedom Party line, and Sheehan called Barr totally unhinged when Sheehan bailed out of campaigning for the ticket because of it. And even though she supports him, after the revival was popular she was talking about running again and against him in 2020 anyway, especially because of his "betrayals" even though she supports him 100%.

The show version of Roseanne had to be written as a normal Trump supporter (whatever that means) otherwise the plots wouldn't work, they couldn't write Roseanne as actual Roseanne because nobody would believe it. ("Reality is unrealistic" trope and all that.)

TL;DR version: This way lies only madness.

Part of the reason Roseanne got on the Peace and Freedom ticket in 2012 was a last gasp hurrah to stop it from becoming a PSL front organization. (For all their faults, PSL is quite good at taking over marginal left organizations.) It didn't have the intended effect of course and it's an L that just keeps on accruing interest with time, sort of like DSA's insistence on never having a national anything.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Another reason was the PSL candidate that year was constitutionally ineligible. It kind of undermines your perennial scam as a ballot access rentier when you let that happen to your #brand.

This reminds me. The Socialist Party USA screwed up so badly that they're going to lose the Natural Law Party's ballot line completely in Michigan after a pretty awesome landgrab of it away from the Evan McMullin campaign in 2016. It's been on the ballot since 1992, even though the national party went defunct in 2004 and the Michigan version went defunct in 1998 and it was usually the Nader entryist ballot line. Thanks Mimi!

In part I think they seemed to be under the impression that the Socialist Party of Michigan actually exists because someone is running a Facebook page for it and the various campus organizations don't realize it doesn't exist so list it as a partner.

edit: though i see the webpage now lists an apartment in Detroit as the Party HQ, rather than the previous status where it listed a building that had been torn down 20 years ago

Seriously though, never liked her or the original series. My two ex-roommates loved it though, and considering they were both right-wingers, it probably makes sense.

No, the true GOAT Fox comedy series was Married With Children. And almost everyone involved in that show turned out to be great human beings.
