So W10 decided my account was corrupted and was only willing to log me in on a "temporary profile". Which is funny because the same thing happened less than 90 days ago to my wife account and that was the reason I updated her computer to W10.

Hopefully this time round it was a simple fix : uninstalling Avira did the job. I won't miss it because I found it cumbersome to use, but apparently antiviruses have a tendency to freak out Windows Defender and the OS which is... yeah.

Why did my PC just upgrade from W7 to W10 without me telling it to? I'm so annoyed and confused right now... :doge

I don't think it can do that. Does anyone else have access to your computer? I signed up my wife's PC for the upgrade, but I still had to actually initiate the install on my own.

Looking at this, that does seem to be the case lately. I downloaded that GWX control panel thing to keep my computer from updating for now.

Yeah, I saw this cropping up all over and meant to come back and update the thread. Wow. What a strange decision for MS to make. There are plenty of cases where corporate clients' productivity and operability could be screwed by this. Just... Wow.

This means I should just be able to set up pycharm to ssh into my schools servers directly in windows.   :aah

Build for the preview insiders should be out now or sometime this weekend with it in it. I guess I should re-estasblish myself as an insider to get it.

Remember my enthusiasm? It has passed.

My PC's Start Menu has disappeared. Now I'm running DISM inside of PowerShell, and it has been stopped at 20% for the last 10 minutes.

Anyone else run into this problem? Apparently it's pretty common.

It is slow. It also didn't work. I did everything here:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/get-help-windows-start-menu

And here (except OS refresh):
http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/computing/has-your-windows-10-start-menu-stopped-working-here-are-four-ways-to-fix-it-11364000314532

I didn't refresh, because it will nuke my non-Win10/non-MS apps according to the site, and I would have to figure out how to reinstall stuff I may no longer have easily at hand.

DISM doesn't even work for me anymore, it doesn't even matter even if I mount an ISO of win 10 when it bitches about source files, because the ISO has to be the exact build number that was installed in the first place.  :doge

It looks like I can use Gateway's recovery partition to nuke the machine back to Win7, erasing all personal data on the machine.

Alternately I can use Microsoft's recovery environment to restore Win10 to its base state, keeping personal data but losing all non-Metro apps.

I can back up data, as Start and Task Bar are unresponsive, but I can still use keyboard shortcuts to summon Explorer windows, Logout, Run apps.

I had been bitching recently about how Apple's quality assurance has tanked in the last year, how many little annoying problems their software has. I guess this problem is showing me who the boss is, as far as technical problem fuckery is concerned.

Despite cold-rebooting and checking after each step to no avail, I rebooted just to see how much I'd need to backup, and everything was working again.

Those errors which are solved but I don't know why they're solved? Those little Swords of Damocles? I hate those so much.

Yes, I agree completely. Win10 actually runs better on my crappy old discount PC, and it's stunningly better UX than Win8. Of course, there are root canal and wisdom teeth procedures which are more pleasant than Win8.

But basically changing its status to a "recommended update" and Trojan-Horsing it in like that, after so many people were saying "no, no, no thanks" is just a shitty move, taking away users' agency in their own environments.

I have Win 10 on the rig I built earlier this year, think it's swell, but am kind of put off by how much they are pushing it on people. Of course the reason I have Win 10 is cause 8 is a shit show and they're basically abandoning 7 in order to not so gently nudge people into getting 10. :doge

OS X has like a million things that Apple hyped up for each release and then promptly abandoned/forgot about. And they're all in your face. Launchpad, widgets, the notifications sidebar, etc. But they still had time to swap the default system font twice in the last two years.

As least the old cruft in Windows is usually kept in the Control Panel or other oft-unused parts of the system.

There's a spectrum of Linux as far as open source aggressiveness is concerned. Ubuntu caught flack a decade ago for including an MP3 decoder and other proprietary bits of software. (I mean, today they're the ones supplying Windows 10 with its Linux terminal emulation or whatever.) While it's certainly possible to find Stallman-approved distros, I believe the most popular ones are the flavors that kinda shrug and go "meh" at closed-source stuff and include it when it makes things more convenient for the users. Ubuntu and Elementary fall into this bracket, while Fedora is probably the most OSS-compatible you can get (GNU-heads complain that they don't go far enough since they include proprietary firmware so that you don't brick your system on installation. The horror!)

I use Gimp even though I have a Creative Cloud subscription because it's what I learned ages ago and it does the job. Same with Audacity vs. Audition, although I've been learning the latter more since they added kickass features like Remix which works really, really fucking well. Plus it's two clicks away when I'm working in Premiere. Speaking of, there's really no analog out there for Premiere, even among closed source stuff. Apple really screwed the pooch with Final Cut Pro X.

During my time using Fedora a few years ago, I didn't have to use the terminal at all outside of work stuff. The only rough corners you'd likely run into are lamer drivers, potentially.

I did the upgrade to 10 (from 7) when I got my new mobo+i7 since the key is tied to the mobo and I wanted to do that before it stopped being free. (Although rumor is they're going to extend it.) Not really had any issues, so I'll stay on it.

Praise be actual multi-monitor taskbar support though. (But why can't I put a second clock on the other monitor?!?)

Everything seems to run fine, but then again I did also advance nearly a decade with my processor and RAM. C2D+DDR2 -> i7k + DDR4.

Probably would have stayed for DirectX 12 anyway...

Agreed. Vista was a clear upgrade from XP in terms of the UI. SP1 took care of the performance issues too.

It annoys me to this day that Vista introduced separate volume controls per app and OS X has yet to add it.

To be honest, the damned iOS interface has taken non-3D appearance utterly too far, and there is no visual difference between some header panels and the buttons they parent. It's just absurd.

The whole thing with Material Design is that it brings some of the drop-shadows back where it makes sense, e.g. for buttons and floating nav elements.

Probably doesn't mean anything coming for me but I dislike the iOS aesthetics. It's far better than when Forstall was crapping things up, but it's too... sparse and "thin." Like, even the default text looks too thin to me, lol. And the hollow icons are worse UX than full icons. iOS should eat a cheeseburger.

Also the translucency reminds me of Aero but not in a good way. And it's used everywhere. The quick settings panel doesn't need to be semi-transparent ffs.

Do you think Android does it any better?
The only Android devices I've fondled have been other people asking me for help with their "free"-ish phones that they can't figure out. Pretty sure they're running non-Vanilla/carrier-muddled versions of the OS, and they're in Japanese. Essentially I am always less worried about aesthetics in those situations, and am just trying to minimize the amount of time I'm in contact with them.

That said, right now it is REMARKABLE how Apple doesn't want to use any iconography other than the top-most level in their UI; get one level past the top of any Settings, and it's just text. And as mentioned, nothing looks like a button. It's a counterintuitive trend that must end. They've fucking rabbit-hole'd down superflat so badly that they no longer can see where it's hurting users.

As someone who has to design shit that has to be readable on multiple screen sizes, in different layouts, and, in some cases, have animations with the added stress of clients who want their websites or apps done yesterday... flat design is here to stay. :bolo

Rest in piss skeuomorphic design. :piss2

I'm done with skeuomorphic too, but superflat can incorporate readable-fucking-usability cues. Like, you know: buttons. Or, hey, ANYTHING that says, "This is an interactive screen element. You can push me. Or slide me. Or whatever. Give it a shot."
