I'm basically waiting on the reserve to say it's ready.  >:(

Thank you for being our first guinea pig.

I was a guinea pig during the preview "beta." I'd rather be on 10 than waiting for a service pack/updates on 8.

It's defo worth the upgrade if you're coming from 8. If you're on 7 you might as well wait a week or two for them to sort things out.

And just as I post this, the upgrade prompt comes in. :rejoice Goodbye, forever Windows 8. I won't miss you.

I would like to update ASAP but the software client I use for work is a tempermental piece of shit and is currently optimized for 8.1. As soon as I hear it's usable on 10 I'll upgrade.

I've found 8.1 to be so functionally similar to 7 as to not matter, other than occasional weird shit with my video card. (keep getting a stupid video memory management internal error)

Could be, and I really appreciate how fast 8 is, even compared to 7. I just never got over the new interface. I know there must be some way to get the old interface back, but I use my laptop like once a month so I never bothered.

Because I thought it was an essential update, I accidentally clicked-through the Japanese Windows Update prompt for the Win10 upgrade, and now I wonder if I'm going to regret it.

Stupid question: Do you need 16 GB of free space just for the install?  Assuming so.  I want to try this on my tablet but space is an issue.  Will wait a good few months or until the first service pack to install Win 10 on my laptop.

You have to upgrade/update first, then you do a clean install.

clean install means a full wipe, do they provide any backup options during the install, or are you on your own?

oh nvrmind i think i misread, youre saying you can choose a clean install after you already are running win 10?

E-mail? It works via windows update.

I just installed it on my desktop, after I installed an Ubuntu dual boot yesterday.
The boot loader broke after the first reboot needed for the installation of Win10.

It took a lot of googling on my phone before both OS's were installed.
Working swimmingly now!

I have a 100gb SSD that I use for my OS.
So is it basically download an extra 20gb on top of your existing OS and then it wipes the shit all over right?

Get the feeling I should just install this shit on a clean SSD.

That's what I read in a FAQ, haven't had a chance to try it myself yet. They made it sound like this is the only way to do a clean install, you have to upgrade first.

Does the 32 bit version still limit the amount of RAM you can utilize?
Yes, Microsoft found PAE breaks too many drivers, among other issues, so they leave it off on 32-bit. 64-bit doesn't have the limitation in the first place.

Unless your processor is over a decade old or something there's really no reason not to be using 64-bit OS's.

Okay, so I did a clean install of Windows 10 so I could format everything because I've been having issues. It worked, and everything's gone, except there's one problem. I haven't gained back my hard drive space despite having a clean format. Help?

You probably never actually formatted the hard drive. I just upgraded but typically when you do a full format and install it will ask what volume/partition you want to install it on and there's usually an option to wipe the data. If you never got the option it probably just installed over what was there.

When I try to format, it tells me I cannot format that volume because Windows is on it. What can I do? How do I delete the old stuff? I see Windows.Old but not all of that is deleting (like system folder).

Dunno. Did you download it to a USB stick? You can do that and boot to that device which is how I always go when I wanna wipe the data and clean install. I don't know if there's an option to wipe your data through whatever automatic update process they have in place.

That data has permissions from your previous Windows install, so you probably don't have explicit permissions to do anything with it.

ah windows.old

yeah if you dont format the HD when presented with the option youre stuck with a parallel install, this is what im doing, cause space is not a premium for me.  not sure when/if Windows 10 does present a format HD option, this is what im asking for specifics on too.  i wouldnt worry too much about it.  i have only seen windows.old create issues with MS Outlook .pst files / profiles,  that and the space it takes up are really the only drawbacks....or if you have a virus on your old windows, it can carry over dat BS.

edit

i saw a screenshot of the install screen and it is identical to the Windows 7 reinstall screen, you have all the same options for deleting partitions, formatting the HD, or not.

The ad tracking and keeping your wifi password is the major issues. The keeping Windows Defender (built-in virus tracking, which granted... has been lagging behind third parties) isn't a huge deal since that is more "protecting stupid customers" reasoning.

Also TL;DR on that shit, at least make the image less compressed if you want me to wade through all that shit, nicca.

Cortana seems neat, but I don't really see the need to have such functionality on your PC when the same stuff is on your phone.

It's because they're unifying Windows 10 across all hardware. So if you get a Windows phone (:ufup if you do) Cortana and your data there is there for it.

The only game I've tried so far that has had a notable performance boost is Project CARS which got a pretty big performance boost and I was able to jack up the settings a bit more without a hit.

GTA V seems to run worse though. Used to hover around 40-70 FPS but seems to shit itself randomly to 20-30FPS. Might be an AMD related bug though since I had the same problem in Project CARS where the GPU suddenly dropped in usage and the game dropped to 30FPS on certain sections of the track.

Xbone streaming is working great tho'
