"Informants" in the game industry SHOULD be fired. They are toying with the jobs of people when they "leak" information. Having been on both sides of the game development coin (been a journalist and a designer) I can tell you it's considered a MAJOR dick move to leak information.

Take this as one (of many) examples. If you're working a game that's not ready to be shown yet. It's a great idea that could be amazing game once it's finished. A game that could bring joy to millions and go on to become one of the flagship franchises of a generation...but some douchebag decides he's going to leak video of the game. It's full of bugs and is generally an unfinished mess with placeholder stuff galore.

Suddenly this thing you've been working hard to build is being lambasted on the internet. People are talking about how the game looks like garbage and they will never play it. They are unable to see past the fact it's an early build and now your game, your baby, is being strangled in its crib. The negative connotations that are now associated with your game/studio are too hard to shake off and the whole thing ends up being canceled which puts potentially hundreds of people out of a job...for the sake of what? So some "informant" can feel important for a few days? So a blogger can get a few more hits on their website? Yes, "informants" should be fired. Real, fake or otherwise.

Of course you can, because you're open to it. The expectation that every form of art should be open to is else face the wrath of the internet... well that's the problem. It blows my mind how entitled fans/fandoms are about their art, and how aggressive and abusive they can be towards the creators if they don't do things the way the fans think it should be done.

I think we're due for a bit of an implosion of the accessibility to creators. It's something that should happen, people have way too much connection and ability to connect to creators. I think the first step is to stop interacting with fans through twitter/facebook/etc. and fire "community managers". Go back to talking to the press and maybe a panel at comic con. It's for the best.
