I always get a kick out of people who live in the Northeastern Corridor, segments of the Left Coast or major city Europe having all these simple solutions the U.S. as a whole should implement. JUST ADD PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION JEEZ! Like the flyover areas aren't already chock full of garbage and failed versions of it. The sheer distances between basic things in most of the U.S. are entirely foreign to them. We don't have a little fucking grocery store every block or three like in quaint European cities or NYC, we've got SUPER Wal-Mart out in some suburban stripmall wasteland that was once an empty field five miles from the town. And LA is like this times ten billion, it's not comparable to "any city along the Mediterranean" in the slightest.
And then we've got a guy outlining his plans for an endless number of walled cities where only bicycles and buses are allowed. And no cars outside the cities. And also only the rich are allowed cars because only they might have places to go outside the bus lines.
And now there's people saying it's reasonable to simply setup bike lines for eight hour commutes into and out of the cities.
I want to reach that level in a thread years back where some guy said we should have a high speed rail system that goes 300mph and stops in every town along the way. And dismissed people questioning its physical feasibility as a "simple planning problem to address." Just fire up the ol A-Train.
We fly so many planes because it's just fucking easier than laying and maintaining track that'll barely get used. And even that infrastructure is garbage. Large distances suck when you're entire planning regime is based around compact/dense non-sprawled metro areas.
Though I suppose its worse when I hear it from people around here "we really need robust public transportation in the city" WE HAVE IT, it doesn't go where you want it to go because you'd never fucking ride it. So it's kept to the main streets which has nothing you want to go to on it. "I'd use it if it was more convenient. We really need more. Maybe a rail-line to downtown." From where? "Oh, I don't know, where people live probably." And when would you ever go downtown it's the state government and everything else (90% of which is some kind of lunch shop) closes at 2pm? "Well, maybe if there was an easy way to get there." Like the multiple roads nobody uses because there's NOTHING DOWNTOWN?
This is why we need to burn down all the cities and just live in the wastes. Just hold off until I play enough Mad Max to be ready.
