Fads have risen and fallen and outsold Mario since the first game came out. Doesn't change the fact that Mario still sells millions of copies after 30 years.

Dude has that Mickey staying power. We'll see where Minecraft is in 10 years.

Big news guys! Wii U is getting a port of a 6 year old game that's on PS3, PS4, Xbox360, Xbox1, PC, iPhone, andriod, linux, web browser, java, fire tv, vita (does that version have boobs in it?) and even windows phone!
Say what you will, but at least it beat out Zune to Minecraft :doge

People thought Mario peaked with SMB3 and 64, and then the New series and Galaxy happened. 94 million copies later... :doge

Nintendo fans being rustled over the rise of various super popular/super simple games is always entertaining. The fact that kids are way more into Minecraft than Mario must really hurt their souls.

Are they though? Anecdotal evidence and all that but I still see tons of kids in the game stores I go to picking up Mario and Nintendo titles and amiibos and shit. Not to mention, Nintendo games still have staying power after years. Though yeah I'm one of those people who really likes Mario Maker but am clueless as to the appeal of Minecraft.
This is how you know you're an old, if you don't get Minecraft.  Mario and shit still sells sure, but it has none of the mindshare that Minecraft has

Mario indeed has longevity, what we are making fun of is some nintards having a short dick complex about it.

This is so true. Mario still commands an audience (lots of grown men play games after all :doge ) but Minecraft is on another level. Similarly various mobile games have more clout with kids than Mario these days. Not to mention CoD.

With Legos you're limited to how many Legos you have. And a built Lego structure only lasts as long as it takes you to come up with a better thing to build.

Minecraft has the gameplay loop at its core for getting material and building stuff, plus it's online so you can play with friends. And the stuff you built at least has the appearance of permanence.

I haven't played much Minecraft and I really love Legos, but that's my take.

What a bizarre thing to say.

I get that you may not like Minecraft. But let's have a physical limited version of something instead of a virtual version of something that is unlimited, unending, and always can have new content pumped into it basically destroys the concept of nearly all video games.

You can get one tiny lego set, for the price of minecraft.

I don't like minecraft, but the appeal is obvious. That day when I won a shitload of lego when I was like 8 years old though.  :rejoice

The minecraft is lego is such a reductive statement also that its completely misleading. Yeah lego is one part of minecraft. There are like a billion others especially when you include the whole modding concept into it.

Minecraft is exploration, Minecraft is art, Minecraft is survival, Minecraft is the Sims, Minecraft is an rpg, Minecraft is a co-op game, etc, etc, etc.

Once again not saying it has to be your cup of tea. Lots of popular things I'm not into. But if you just think Minecraft is a one to one lego thing, you are pretty much not seeing the whole picture.

Harsh. But I guess that's to be expected from you.

I'm not going to call somebody stupid for not understanding the appeal of something (unless that person is purposely being a jackass). There are absolutely some games that baffle me on the appeal of them until I dabble in them myself. I may not come away loving that thing but I tend to at least get the appeal of it.

I don't like Destiny or Dark Soul's franchise and if I'm in a particular mood I'll probably be a bit snarky about both games but when I hear people talk about what they like in them, I start to get it even if I don't care for either of them and think a lot of the hype surrounding them is overblown.

The only games I would argue that I don't get right now are what I call these breed of games that feel like they were only made for youtubers to play and act like dipshits over.

I would put stuff like surgeon simulator and goat simulator in that category. Although I guess some people just like fucking around in those environments. But deep down I'm deeply cynical about games like that.

I think it's less the base appeal of building stuff and more the fact that... out of all the games that allow you to build crazy shit in them (and there's been construction kit type games since the 80's), why is it this particular one that looks worse than some Saturn games that took off like crazy?

I think it's less the base appeal of building stuff (since I'll partake in stuff like RPG Maker) and more the fact that... out of all the games that allow you to build crazy shit in them (and there's been construction kit type games since the 80's), why is it this particular one that looks worse than some Saturn games that took off like crazy?

1.) The graphics being very simple attracted kids instead of the niche nerds some of those other games were targeting.
2.) It hit at the perfect time. Indie games were blowing up. Games on youtube were blowing up. Playing Minecraft on youtube was blowing up.
3.) The game embraced modding in a way that most of these games from bigger companies didn't.
4.) Similar to the perfect timing thing above but it ended up everywhere. PC, Mobile, popular console platforms. It wasn't limited to one particular place or platform.

The graphics / art style also guaranteed that tons of people with low spec computer could play the game, lowering the barrier to entry. For the longest time you just paid the "low" beta price and that was it.

I can tell who legitimately is spoiled as fuck and doesn't talk to kids. No offense bros  :doge

To the lego thing: do you even know how expensive that shit is or were you just bought a bunch of that shit regardless? Minecraft is like one low fee, on all kinds of consoles, phones, shitty computers and doesn't need set after set.

To the graphics: this is the one game where I've seen all the kids know it, talk about it and bond about it. Not only this but because of the boxy nature of the game they can make little minecraft inspired dudes at school and make them later in game, or even trade ideas with fellow kids.

It's one of the better games out there since it inspires creativity amongst the kids rather than just walking them through an already established world and narrative.

But of course older fucking gamers gonna get on some elitist highhorse about a game actually catering to kids and accessible to them like video games generally should tbh.

Legos don't have world generation. People underestimate the draw of that.

minecraft is also hella cheaper, and lets you explore and interact with the world -- and that doesn't even touch on the common, collaborative machinima environment it provides.

also, dudebrehs, minecraft and legos are complementary. my daughter also loves legos (especially minecraft lego kits).

I dunno if this is a singling out of me or whatnot, but there's a big difference between not understanding the appeal (which is what I said, but then again I'm old and generally have niche tastes in the media I consume) and getting on an elitist highhorse about a game that caters to kids. Especially since IMO plenty of the best games ever were made during the time when kids and early teens made up the majority of the videogame market.

 :kobeyuck

What a bizarre thing to say.

I get that you may not like Minecraft. But let's have a physical limited version of something instead of a virtual version of something that is unlimited, unending, and always can have new content pumped into it basically destroys the concept of nearly all video games.

and a vast metafictive universe full of internet content and celebrities. kids know who (fucking) pewdiepie is. miyamoto? that's what dad updates his facebook account about while dribbling pocky crumbs onto his project a-ko t-shirt

I got my dad to play Mario Kart with me after begging, whooped my ass, then was like "you want me to keep playing with you?"  :doge

Then later he didn't understand why I played war games.

Remember, there are Gaffers that try to show unknowing or unwilling friends and family the intro to The Last of Us.

I genuinely think gaming side gets worse and worse with time. You Gaf veterans might say it was always shit or became ultra shit at a certain point, but to me, shit is getting worse.

I don't know that its getting worse but there is an elitism in games that was always there but seems increasingly more prevalent nowadays that is super annoying. It's like nobody plays videogames to actually enjoy them anymore. It's all about dissecting everything like its a fine wine.

The ratio of posts talking about the fun times in a game or experiences in a game versus meta-dissection of the genre is out of whack.

And its not just on forums. It's like the people you meet online are the same way.

The worst is when you go to a thread for a simple answer to like where something spawns and it just gets buried in some dumbass argument about speccing.

I was in a party with somebody on xbox and somebody who I wasn't familiar with was in the party. I noticed he was playing Fallout 4. It said he was like level 40 something which means he has put in a good number of hours.  So to be polite I asked, oh you are playing Fallout, what do you think of it.

I mean he could have told me anything. The experiences he had with the game. The things he thought could be better in the gameplay or whatever. Here is this massive rpg that you can have a wide range of opinions on. He says "I thought it would look better". And that's it. I mean that's valid I guess. I just thought it was the least interesting and least informative thing in the world he could have told me. It felt like a neogaf post.
