I don't understand American closing hours.
In Europe it is understood if a store or restaurant closes at 10 that means 10 for the customers but the staff obviously have to work some time after that - but that is obviously part of the job so how is there even an issue?
americans prolly don't get paid for work done after the closing for customers, so I can understand not wanting to do work (counting up the till, cleaning, etc) on your own time.
Yes they do. It would be illegal not to be paid for their time.
You'd think. But this is also the same America that actively tries to AVOID paying people overtime hours despite working those folks into overtime. I've seen someone have to fight HR to get overtime pay because HR/payroll was cutting their recorded hours to avoid paying overtime.
As it is, I agree with Dennis: If you say you're open till 10: That should be open until 10 for customers. You can't sit there and have it be for you and customers and expect to clean/prep for the next day at the same time. You just can't. I
do apologize every time I'm the last one in/closing within 20 mins at places. Because I understand the want to get home and having to clean up. So I try to order, get my food quickly and get out so they don't have to wait on me. But still...
