TBH, I do sort of care. I watched Ghost when I was like 14 and don't particularly care about the validity of the source material (now cast Scarlett as say, Jubilee and watch me write a thesis) so it's not based in some sense of "der ruined my animus." But goddamn, it is beyond old at this point for Hollywood to continue to create this self-fulfilling prophecy that a non-whitey can sell tickets. We'll never get the next big Asian actress because they're never fucking cast in anything. And as much as I'd love to have been born as Fes from That 70's Show, Scarlett is about as miscast in this thing as Morgan Freeman as the Hulk. And not Bruce Banner, just Morgan Freeman buttass naked, painted in green trying to act angry about shit.

TBH I don't care.  As in...this movie didn't need to be made in the first place and looks all kinds of cheesy.

That's pretty fair, I cared much more that Arise was of a lower quality than other GitS stuff. I care about GitS, very much, but this shit isnt really worth my time apart from a general 'kek'. This isnt a movie for me, it's for other people, and that's fine. I will still however criticize it when I see it brought up.

GITS has always been kind of all over the place.  I like the original comics OK, but the original anime movie was :zzz personality and humor-devoid boredom, so I hope this has way more of the SAC-influence in it.

The role is definitely white washed but if it's based on the 1995 movie, it wasn't going to be good anyway  :doge

I wish people would get off the GITS train already.  Shirow made some much better manga.  Make a live-action Appleseed instead.

but the original anime movie was :zzz personality

It wouldn't have been that bad if they picked up the pace a bit. They were doing world-building so very much there that the main-plot of the "ghost"-jacking was completely ignored until like the last 15 or so minutes of  the movie where the tank shows up.

Granted, that world-building brought in fans (like me) that never saw the manga before it and thereby helped with establishing Stand Alone Complex/world-building for other entries for folks to get on board. So... it was kinda successful in that case. :doge

There was a big "Chappelle is a monster" blow out a few months ago when people wrote about his act and some of it leaked on YouTube (not sure if it's the same as the special).

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1308507

The controversy over white-washing seems to have little to do with the actual picture in question. Even the idea of asian(-american) roles being taken away seems to depend entirely on whether it's a white person doing it. I wonder what kind of fireworks would fly if every major character in a remake of a famous asian IP was made both non-asian and non-white. As for GITS or Death Note, I don't really care what they do. Sometimes you just have to write off a movie and move on with your life.

All the posturing in that Gits thread by people to prove they aren't some racist troglodyte for thinking it looks cool.  Best to just say "visually it looks kinda neat, but the tone, feeling, and heart are missing."

Oh, and Scar Jo is a bad actor and always has been.

Scar Jo was pretty much groomed for this role.  Her, Lucy, and Under The Skin are all her as a post-human, and two of them as a sexy femme fatale.  And then there is her Black Widow role.

The Fast & the Furious have shown non-CACs can sell, if given half a chance (and lots of cool explosions, which based on the GITS trailer, there is plenty of). It's a total bullshit move.

Okay, now back to pretending to not care about stupid shit to seem above it all to strangers on the internet.

Spoilers for the outrage brigade: The Hooded Man in "Ghost in the Shell," the whole plot is discovering that Mira was Motko and just a clone. White-washing fixed. She's a fucking android, they can make her whatever's tjeyy want her to be.

Quote from: Monocle
The gay and trans stuff in the first special is some weak shit. A gay superhero who's defined by his habit of changing clothes all the time? The gayest member of a gay couple should be the "wife"? Trans women tricking guys into fucking them? It's not actually oversensitive in the least to take issue with this retrograde nonsense. "Tone" and "context" really aren't valid excuses here. He didn't deliver this stuff with a wink.

I get that part of Dave's comedy persona is to act like so-called PC objections are for whiners and elitists or whatever, but if he's going to go out of his way to be transgressive, he could at least have reasonably clever punchlines and avoid unironically reinforcing backward stereotypes.

In the age of Wikipedia and vlogging, it's not actually very hard at all to understand where LGBT people are coming from, and show a minimum of respect by, say, not repeating the demeaning lie that all gay men are hyperfeminized sissies, and not referring to trans women like they're men who chopped their dicks off to improve their "disguises." It's not funny or even particularly bold. It's just parroting ignorant opinions and inviting people to laugh in recognition.

Age isn't an excuse for someone like Dave Chapelle, an intelligent and worldly man who's had the opportunity to meet all kinds of people. This shit belongs back in the 90's where a comedian could still plausibly claim not to get "those people."

Said every high school bully and verbally abusive jackass ever. Jokes should be funny, or at least make you think by highlighting the absurd or ironic. And besides, humor isn't a free pass to take cheap swings at oppressed minorities.

"Take a joke," wow. I don't think I've ever seen this phrase rolled out to defend anyothing other than mean-spirited tripe.

"So he rapes them. I know, I know! That's the dilemma for the audience because he rapes, but he saves a lot of lives. And he saves way more than he rapes, and he only rapes to save. But he does rape."

the jokes were sooo good.  :neogaf the way the joke ties into the cosby bit at the end of the show is glorious
