There is palpable disappointment in the hurricane Irma thread that the storm isn't going to hit as a devastating category 5.

Most of them don't quite seem to get that the thresholds are completely arbitrary and not like the Richter scale. A Cat 4 with 150mph winds isn't going to be much safer than a Cat5 at 160.

I grew up in south FL and was there for Andrew.  Irma is a monster storm and if you're in an evac zone you should defintely leave.  What chafed me about the GAF thread was the absolute certainty people had about where, when, and how powerful Irma would be when it arrived and the sense of disappointment that it may be weaker than originally predicted and that it may keep drifting to the west.  There were morons spouting off about how the Keys will be completely wiped out and that the gubbament should somehow seize all of the land and prevent people from rebuilding.  Displace 70,000 people and confiscate their homes because a neckbeard sez so.

Speaking of foolishness, the older brother of one of my high school friends stayed behind in the Keys.  It's his choice to play roulette with his life for the sake of bravado, but his mom is worried sick about him.  She already has health issues and this certainly isn't going to help.

It's probably because they grew up in an era where software piracy was rife and now we also live in the age of Humble bundle type deals and occasional sales, so people just wait out I guess.

or maybe it's because we live in an era where the open source movement has hit such critical mass in general that there's free software that for most people matches the few things they need out of most paid software, often is on more platforms than paid, and sometimes is even better depending on what you need it for

i mean, not to mention how entire types of software exist purely as free versions now, nobody would remember that Netscape was like $50 not free, one half of the whole phony Microsoft monopoly case was based at its core around them giving away IE for free, an event horizon browsers have never returned from and now even mostly closed-source yet still free browsers are considered suspect

if you want a defrag program or cleaner outside of what's built into Windows, you aren't even going to think "paid software!" you'll get ccleaner or defraggler or one of auslogics' products or whatever and be off and running in two minutes

the thread isn't even talking about institutional software like CAD or SPSS where you use the garbage paid versions because of legacy issues which left a large gap between them and the open source free versions (thankfully at least in terms of statistical software most of that has caught up in cross-compatibility finally to where I don't even check it, just save the file in the format, like if I'm using LibreOffice...and no R was not a true option for years because nobody else could use it anymore...not that anyone actually ever wants to reproduce your results) but minor little usability apps where most people don't even know the MacOS/Windows default is a problem since they still go file->save rather than click any icons let alone know what a ribbon is

I have to assume you didn't buy stuff in the 80's and 90's, because...people bought software and hardware back then and it wasn't a big deal, and adjusted for inflation both were far more expensive than they are now. What you're suggesting is an evergreen and faulty rationalization for not paying for digital software.

The real cause is the internet. 20-30 years ago pirated software was hard for the average person to get ahold of. Distribution was narrow and there was a general policy on BBS sites that in order to download pirated software you had to upload some, and that was after you were even allowed onto the site, which usually meant getting a phone call from the admin, or being vouched for by a current member. Torrents have made illegal software available to the masses with almost no barrier to entry and almost no risk of prosecution. With no risk and a feeling of anonymity, people take what they can for free.

To OP's point, I think our brains haven't evolved yet to be able to view digital goods as tangible things that have inherent value. People also don't understand the work that goes into making software. Nor do people really understand the consequences of "free" apps and services that end up selling your personal information, install malware, etc. It's the same as cheap imported goods. People are fine with paying a low price for a shirt even if it means that some child is working in a sweatshop to make it. Or wait for a Steam sale for a game whose developers spent the last 8 months of 100 hour work weeks to make. Out of sight, out of mind for most people.

Someone on my Facebook has been using Harvey and Irma as ways to talk about climat change. Absolutely nothing about the people effected.

I posted a video of my friends house under water. She lives next to a bayou. so of course they were flooded. They lost everything. Actually, the video was inside an emotional post about how they had lost everything. My friend just goes and takes the video, absent of the suffering, and goes "CLIMATE CHANGE, I TOLD YOU MOTHER FUCKERS" when she lives literally next to a bayou. Absolutely nothing about the people in the middle of it. Just going off about some agenda (yes, I know climate change is real but this is still an agenda as per the way it's being communicated).
