Mario X-Com is out...anyone try it yet?  I won't get mine until maybe tomorrow.

There's a Pokken Tournament demo up too.  Never played it before and don't care much for Pokemon, but...I kinda like it...?  Guess I'm gonna pick that up too next month.

https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/2017/04/theres-no-nintendo-switch-emulator
Quote
by Lisa Weintraub Schifferle
Attorney, FTC, Division of Consumer & Business Education

If you can’t get your hands on a Nintendo Switch gaming system, you may think an emulator is the next best thing. Think again. Online ads for emulators, sometimes with Nintendo branding, say they can run Switch’s games on your desktop. But there is no legit Nintendo Switch emulator. It’s a scam.

Even worse, when you try to download a Nintendo Switch emulator, you can install unwanted applications on your computer. These apps give you misleading information about computer problems that aren’t really there, then ask you to pay to fix them.

Other times, when you go to an emulator site, you get a link to a survey that you must complete to get a code to unlock the emulator. Again, the emulator doesn’t really exist. Don’t give personal information and don’t sign up for anything requiring your credit card information. You’re still not getting an emulator.

What can you do to avoid this scam?
  • Don’t download anything that says it’s a Nintendo Switch emulator.
  • Don’t complete a survey to get an “unlock code.” That’s a red flag for a scam.
  • Keep your security software current. Set it to update automatically. Installing unknown programs can lead to malware.
  • Play Nintendo Switch at your friend’s house until you’re able to buy the real one yourself.

And if you think you’ve been the victim of a scam, report it to the FTC.

I've played it around two hours or so (I just got Luigi).  It's pretty good.  It's basically what you would expect: a more accessible XCOM with a wacky backdrop.  I was kind of disappointed at first at how shallow it was, but that concern is assuaged as you unlock more characters and abilities.  If you're a super hardcore strategy game fan, then it will probably be too shallow for you.

Took my Switch when I went out with my family to an Italian Cafeteria. Played Bomberman with my two nieces while waiting and after eating food.

Pretty amazing.

I'm not one for strategy games, but had been wanting to try X-Com and never got around to it.  When Mario + Rabbids got announced, I figured it would make for a good "babby's first turn-based strategy game" and it works well in that regard.  It seems way more impressive visually on the Switch screen than on a TV...the framerate seems to chug a bit when docked, although since this isn't an action game it doesn't matter much.  Seems like a pretty fun game!

Am really digging how there's been something good coming out every month since the Switch was released.  I now have a pretty good-sized library of games available to play.  Too many indie games, in fact!  The one genre that's missing is FPS...can we get something already?

No need to be an elitist.  The Mario game is a great experience for someone who is just getting acclimated to the genre or wants something less brutal.  They can always play the other games if they want something more challenging.

I'm digging Mario vs. Rabbids a lot, and one of the reasons is that it isn't just Kiddie XCom. Once you get past the intro, it's not really a brain-dead game, and it offers completely traversal than XCom, requiring its own kind of strategy. The battles are snappy and quick and you're limited to just 3 characters, but there's still a lot to like here. I think Ubisoft deserves a lot of credit for this game.

I'm a big fan of strategy games like X-com and Julian Gollop. I played the original (UFO: Enemy Unknown) when it first came out, then played Jagged alliance 2 , enjoyed the hell out of Rebelstar Tactical Command and Ghost Recon Shadow Wars, before finally playing XCOM and XCOM 2.

Mario + Rabbids is a legitimately great strategy game.

One thing I love about Mario/Rabbids is how mobile you are, especially compared to other strategy games.  I know the maps aren't huge, but with the right setup, you can easily traverse over half a map in a single turn.

I just finished world three and this is probably the most pleasant surprise of the year.  It will probably make my GOTY list.

Mario XCOM is legitimately fantastic. When it was announced I just saw it as a throwaway stopgap for Odyssey but I'm really enjoying it.

I feel like it could use some more shit on screen to tell you your range. Sometimes you'll use the overwatch ability and it'll give you this big grid and then you won't hit dudes on that grid for some reason. Or if you are doing a combo jump maneuver you have to land before you know how far you will actually be able to shoot from your resting position. The game is easy enough so far that it isn't a huge deal but sometimes it messes me up.

One thing I think this game does better than Xcom is the difficulty curve.  I'm on the last boss and it's disgustingly brutal.  Xcom has an inverse difficulty curve where the early game is difficult and the late game is a snoozefest.  Granted, I haven't played WotC yet so I am unsure if that has been addressed.

I finally beat it.  The last boss took me a good five attempts before I got it, and even then I barely skirted by.  It was an excellent game and the most pleasant surprise of the year.  I'm not interested in doing challenges or post game content, if only for the fact my backlog is massive.

How much of the skill tree were you able to complete without doing challenges?

I did most of the world 1 ones and I'll probably keep that up. Do you think the last boss would have been easier if you had a more fleshed out tree or were you capped off by the main content?

Probably 2/3 of the tree.  My final battle team was Mario, Rabbid Luigi and Rabbid Peach.  It certainly would have been easier as I skipped a few abilities, such as the passive HP buff, to focus on active abilities.

i don't believe that people who like the rabbids actually exist outside of Yves, i refuse to despite any evidence suggesting otherwise!

even people who were like oh, i want to try that rabbids game back at wii launch days, i'd pop it in (buy two get 50% one sale when there was nothing at launch and roommate wanted to try it, then sold it to Game Stop for new copies of RE 4 and Order Up!...profit) and even when they played the good minigames they were like oh they're kinda not funny at all like i thought can we go back to wii sports

though rabbids go home is apparently decent, i mean it still has rabbids in it tho

Eh, if you mean a GX successor, probably 0.5%. If you mean any new game with "F-Zero" slapped on it such as Star Fox Zero, probably close to 35% during the Switch's entire lifetime.

Everything I know about Splatoon (other than the fact that it's for babies) comes from Giant Bomb East which has three fanatics for it. They made 2's single player sound like it's way more fleshed out and more intently designed than 1's. I guess in 1 there's no unlocks or different weapons and stuff. And the map visual designs are all taken from MP?

Don't believe or trust me on any of this, but it sounded to me like Titanfall vs. Titanfall 2 where the first game repurposed MP stuff to sorta fake a campaign mode and the second game had it more clearly and separately as a design focus.

I am passing on what I have heard from three fans of the game on a website presumably about video games, I would trust anyone on here who has the games over me.

Not having to play Splatoon 2 with that bulky Wii U gamepad alone makes it 1000 times better than the original.  No point in playing the original, Tiesto, just stick with the sequel.  It does everything better.

Took out my Switch and instead of turning on normally, I got a dead battery screen.  Weird since I'm 99% certain I turned it off last time I used it on Friday.  Couldn't get into the recovery menu either but fortunately after plugging it in and charging for 15 minutes the battery went to 3% and it booted normally.  Seems to be charging up fine but I am having such bad luck with hardware lately.   :-\  Hope it was just a case of it not having been shut down.
