I just hope BOTW2 makes up for the total lack of dungeons, unique bosses and music.  It was so close to being the perfect Zelda.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Ocarina still claims the 3D Zelda throne imo.

Agreed. A couple of dungeons and it would be the perfect game. Thought itís still top 5 for me in this gen.

They all look the same? Majoraís Mask has one town and reused Ocarina assets. Who gives a fuck. BOTW has an entire continent while still making characters have storylines and unique personality. Comparing them makes you look ridiculous. Like youíre trying to find something wrong. For the scope, BOTW has lots going on with lots of npcs and yet still manages to exceed every Zelda besides Majoraís and thatís still not good enough for you.

I can see preferring the plot of Majoras Mask. It’s more unique. But it has all the limitations of storytelling from a year 2000 N64 game. Lackluster translation, limited dialogue, and minimal cutscenes. I’m the sense of how the story is told BOTW is imo a pretty big leap... this is based on memory
Though have not played majoras mask since release.

still better than the poorly voice acted cringe cutscenes in botw. :idont ultimately MM has characters and stories you care about, botw has none. mm has tons of things to discover that enriches the world in subtle ways outside of quests (finding secret npc dialogue for example). botw world doesn't make sense at all once you think about it - doesn't feel like a world oppressed for a century at all. plus they didn't know how to tell a story in an unstructured progression, so they blow their entire load in the intro and you don't give a shit about any of the sages or whatever the main goons are. compare also to OoT where you feel bonds even with the sages that have minimal dialogue.

For the scope

that's the problem. open world sucks, everything in prior Zeldas was more rewarding to discover and interact with, because size didn't water the contents down.

botw story is shit lol no two ways about it

and I guess who needs real characters like in MM when you can get... faceless NPCs asking for 10 small fish like in a run off the mill MMO?  :huh

mm portrays unique 3 day routines for every character of which everyone has unique personalities and designs. botw can't even be bothered to change a single thing in the landscape on photos from "100 years ago" - to the point that the trees are still identical. so much for worldbuilding  :doge even if npcs had anything close to what you describe, it's not like there's any reason to find out. they all look the same and just give you uninspired mmo fetch quests, because open world can't compete with real level design. npc events outside of towns start to repeat unnaturally like any other open world game too.

we get it bro you bought a wii u at launch and are still traumatized, move on with your life

NPC's aren't repeated in Kokiri Forest, Goron City, and Zora's Domain at all.

So far the only NPC's being reused are kids and even those are different via town.

Cindi: I know you asked it like a billion years ago now, but as someone whoís liked OG Yoshiís Island and never played any of the other Yoshi platformer games: Wooly World is the best Yoshi game, even better than YI.  TBF, the amazing soundtrack for Wooly World definitely influences my opinion some, but even without it I still feel like Iíd prefer it to YI for the SNES.

Also :lol :lol :lol at SpielerEins implying BOTW characters are samey and uninspired while in the same breath raving about the design and character of NPCís in Majoras Mask, a game where the big AAA developer basically did their own version of an asset-flip.

Mask is a great game, but of the two BOTW is the better Zelda game.  donít @ me

I have high hopes for the new Zelda game.

Now that Nintendo has the assets, tools and knowledge I hope theycan focus on adding a few kick ass dungeons.

Also hope the new Zelda is less physics based and more old school item stuff.

I think thatís whatís one of the biggest surprises I had with BOTW: not only is it a brilliantly crafted, genre-defining title, but it also so clearly has several aspects in design with room to grow and improve upon.  Only other game I can think of doing similar within the last couple generations is Demonís Souls.

EDIT: SaGa games on switch look so good :whew Sure would be nice if I could get a modern port of FFV with similar love and care  :mjcry

The problem with BOTW side quests (and fighting enemies for that matter), is that you don't get really shit as a reward.  "Just delivered some meal to someone? Here... have some bananas."  "Just killed a white bokoblin?  Here... have some bokoblin guts and an apple.   Forget experience points to build on something."   Yeah, you can get weapons... that last for all of 6 swings till it shatters like glass.  That still hasn't resonated very well with me...  Hope that shit gets removed in BOTW2.

"Here... have some bokoblin guts and an apple. "

You mean ingredients to make things of worth?

Also they aren't just bananas. They have utility. Those bananas are more than likely mighty bananas which raise attack power which is helpful in a pinch. That's a pretty good reward.

Sounds like bad rewards...if you don't fiddle with the entire crafting/cooking thing that's central to the game.

A problem with most BOTW criticisms is that the majority are the nittest of picks.

Like this.

Here you have a dude using actual story characters in previous games and comparing them to...Traveler A and Traveler B.

Such a boring, sterile game.

"No wonder I forgot about them. You don't interact with NPCs like you would in MM."

Do you like any Zelda *besides* MM? This is why MM fans are the worst. Never mind you interact more with the world than NPC's. The kinds of games MM and BOTW are make them complete opposites.

The whole Champions dynamic was such a (lol) breath of fresh air. I mean, Link's still amnesiac for most of the game, but in terms of the cutscenes included there are far less with Link being like "Wait I don't know anything about any of this shit, any of these people, how to fight, how to ride, etc."

But you get tons of flashbacks showing Link being a competent soldier and guard, and he finally gets the recognition of Hero from the realm without having to collect some fucking in-game pendants or some shit. Was just really great to see.

Also loved seeing Zelda be competent... for the most part. I still don't really care for her design compared to past games (Champion Tunic Link is the new GOAT) but I guess it suits her nerdy nature.

Angle of trajectory plays a part in distance, as does how much kinetic energy is built up.  Axes and two-handed swords are probably the easiest way to build max momentum on an object in stasis before the timer runs out.

Also: dunkeyís video is mandatory viewing if you enjoy dinking around in Zelda.

Guess in NG+, you narrow down to what's good and where to farm if need be.  Sapphires and Stalnox toenails... nah, star fragments and diamonds are the only thing you need to actually upgrade your armor properly from the Great Fairy.  But besides Silver Lynels, there's really no tough enemies anymore worth fighting, so yeah...  most drops seem worthless after awhile.  Guess that's just me.

I kept my preorder for the split control, kind of curious how it would scratch the system?  :doge

I think my main worry was involuntarily torquing it more than it was designed for/would be possible with just the joycons. The little hori d-pad joycon has improved playing handheld mode considerably, I'd almost consider it essential now.

The backs on both sides have plastic that sticks out and covers part of the back of the tablet.  It's possible that enough pressure or sliding them off/on could result in scratches.  IIRC someone on Reddit said this already happened to their system.

Mine just arrived- these are a keeper for sure.  100 times more comfortable than the standard joycons and the d-pad is awesome.  It makes the system feel HUGE but it's so much better for portable use.  They also feel much sturdier than the regular joycons do.

Despite the bulkier size, you can still dock the Switch with these attached, too.
