Would you be more or less likely to eulogize for John McCain…if you knew he had fathered an illegitimate black child?

McCain was a war hero, I give him dap. But can anyone name a single accomplishment he made as senator, one with positive long lasting impact? The first thing to come to mind is campaign finance reform, but of course he shitcanned it shortly thereafter. This is a man who got caught in a financial scandal as a congressman, voted for the Iraq war, voted with W Bush 90% of the time, and of course voted against all of Obama's noteworthy legislature.

Also can anyone name some foreign policy issues McCain was right on, in the last...20 years? Outside of Russia.

The McCain funeral certainly was a who's who of the 'Washington establishment'. Cheney, the Clintons, Kerry, Bush, Giuliani the entire gang was there side by side, singing, praying and weeping.

It seems kinda selfish in a weird way. Like they all showed up because in due time they each expect to get a similar burial.

I was a big Mccain supporter in 2000. I remember that he had sponsored a bill keeping the FCC out of regulating the internet. I think that bill also forced telecoms to provide internet access to parts of rural America not yet getting access.

Also I recall in his run-up to the 2008 election getting a bill passed that forced ISPs to report any child porn they find being transmitted on their service.

Also during the Bush years he voted against the tax cuts and sponsored some bill with Teddy Kennedy on immigration.

Since we're all still somehow talking about McCain I want to say that I don't actually know how to reconcile the words "war hero" with the iconic imagery of bomber pilots dropping agent orange on villages full of innocent people. I could accept "war victim" but we all know John was very proud of what he did over there and believed in his country strongly. Went on to try to stick his dick in just about every other country, too. "Decent Republican" my ass. We shouldn't forget that he was responsible for opening the door for Sarah Palin, too, who was like proto-Trump. He could have gone with Lieberman or whatever, but nope.

As a non-American food stamps is some WWII-level rationing card holdover. How is this a thing in a first-world country?

That might be where the program started (not really sure if it's histroy) but in modern times it's just giving people money for food that can't afford it.

Obviously more complex than that, but that's the gist of its intended purpose.I

Also: sounds like McCain was the original anti-war neutrality motherfucker. Imo, the only reason democrats are celebrating him is that he's one of the last Republican left worthy of any respect whatsoever for being a somewhat decent human being and a patriot. After that it's like... Allan Hurd seems ok, I guess?

We have what is called 'food banks' where the poor can pick-up food packages for free.
Basically the same system but you need to head to the special free food places. In the US it seems that the poor can get their free food everywhere which is actually more convenient.

In all honesty that's a pretty sorry list that includes one Republican that has endorsed the last three Democratic presidential candidates, a democrat, someone who's not a politician, the guy that everyone thought was the worst modern President until Jan 20, 2017. His brother who's never held a federal office, and his equally reviled Vice President who 20% of Americans think is a war criminal.

And Ben Carson, who is a pretty good doctor that appears to be on the spectrum and has never won an election afaik.

Most of the Republicans i can still respect aren't really politicians. People like Rick Wilson or that Mormon dude that ran as an independent. I'm sure I disagree with them on a lot of sht, but like at least they care more about America than "owning the libz"

The US has food banks as well but they aren't government run
They're usually run by volunteers who receive funding and support from the government, leftover stock from supermarkets, donations from corporations and such.
Before the economic crisis the weren't necessary and one of our finance ministers once said he was ashamed and would improve conditions so they could be closed.
A decade later and they're as busy as ever.  :doge

Nintex's point (I think) is that the Media Democrats always celebrate someone no longer on the scene as a "good Republican" unlike whoever is current. Similar to McCain, look at Romney. Obama was constantly praising Reagan. Paul Ryan will be probably one soon enough, he was temporarily for a little period before he came back into power.

Even Dick Cheney has managed to get some media praise for bashing Putin and questioning Trump.

You almost never see this from the GOP. Unless the person has totally turned against the Democrats. A Democratic McCain, who bashes the fringes of his party and talks a good game while sometimes having a few steps here and there out of line on specific issues, but generally is a straight-party guy and votes for the party leaders, would never fly with the GOP or associated media as a "good Democrat."

About the only one I can think of is Joe Lieberman and he only really achieved this status by being pro-war everything, losing his Democratic primary, still winning the election and being McCain's best friend. If McCain doesn't win the nomination in 2008, I doubt Joe has the status he does because he won't be anti-Obama. Even his Obamacare move wouldn't have gotten him the praise it did considering he voted for it in the end, a number of Democrats did similar things and none became heroes.

http://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/02/us/politics/meghan-mccain-funeral-trump.html
Quote
But as Ms. McCain shared one of her father’s dying directives — “Show them how tough you are” — her voice stopped wavering. The warrior’s daughter steeled herself, drew her eyes up and stepped into battle.

“The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again,” Ms. McCain said in a broadside against President Trump, “because America was always great.”

Applause from the crowd rang out, rendering as tinny in a cathedral not built for the sound.

This passage from Ms. McCain’s eulogy, delivered as Mr. Trump’s own daughter Ivanka sat among the mourners, will be remembered for its explicit rebuke of the Trump-era Republican politics that Mr. McCain had condemned as too partisan, too tribal and, as Ms. McCain put it, defined by “cheap rhetoric.”

Her emotional call to arms was also proof — as if any was needed — that Ms. McCain is her father’s daughter, a paradoxical Republican figure willing to pay the price of being politically direct.
Quote
This surely would have delighted her father. Even with a deeply felt and loving eulogy, Ms. McCain, 33, did as Mr. McCain had done so often: provoked and divided his own political party in dramatic fashion.

Ms. McCain, who built her career as a blogger and writer and is now a co-host of “The View” on ABC, shares her father’s ability to pivot between righteous anger and effusive love in the span of a breath or two. Like him, she has honed a sense of timing: She understands how to toggle between each for maximum effect.

And, like him, she has taught herself to be professionally invigorated by conflict as she has thrived in the ever-closing space between politics and entertainment. She has been happy to stand publicly at odds with the shifting ideals of her own party.
Quote
For Ms. McCain, televised debate on “The View” is akin to what her father did on the Senate floor.

“I know what defined him,” Ms. McCain said of her father during her eulogy. “I got to see it every single day of my blessed life.”

The senator’s beliefs in the ideals she outlined — toughness, love, bipartisanship and respect for a bygone “stoic silence that was once the mark of an American man” — have ultimately defined his daughter, former Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, a man Ms. McCain recently called a surrogate “uncle” on Instagram, wrote in an email.

“As proud as she was of him, he was even prouder of her,” Mr. Lieberman said. “Meghan is likely to embody John’s spirit on matters of public policy and good government in ways in which John did during his public life.”

I'm dissapointed that Trump did not fire Jeff Sessions on labor day

yet

Mitch must be sweating buckets right now.
The death of John McCain to rekindle love for patriotism and drown out racist comments made by his candidates and the Manafort trial, a SCOTUS likely confirmed and all-time highs for the economy. All while Trump is showing he's against washirton elites by not paying federal employees more. The midterm election strategy is in the bag.

Unless Trump throws a tantrum and fires Sessions and half the justice department through Twitter before the election.  :doge

Trump should clean up in the PR seats, while holding the constituency seats. This will allow him to form a majority government instead of having to be in a coalition with the GOP. As a result he'll be able to pass Constitutional Amendments through the House on a party line vote and get them on the national ballot in 2020.

The midterm election strategy is in the bag.

How do you expect the midterms to go, exactly?
- GOP drags in the polls
- SCOTUS confirmed
- Mueller releases his report
- OMG Rudy is dancing naked on the White House lawn shouting the N-word to reporters
- Congress declares war on Iran. Unanimous vote (minus Bernie and Rand Paul) after Obama and George Bush deliver an incredible case for democracy and freedom "McCain would've wanted this"
- Trump fires Jeff Sessions
- Putin assassinates Michael Cohen and Paul Manafort
- #ResistTheWar does not change the mind of Washington
- Election is delayed pending operation PERSIAN FREEDOM
- Trump chokes on well-done steak while watching CNN report the first casualties

The New Yorker fucked up and invited Steve Bannon to its ideas festival. They'll probably have to disinvite him as a bunch of the other (actually popular) attendees are dropping out as a result.

This is going to end with the same five or six people writing iterations of the same "free speech" pieces they always do in the NYT op-ed, Quillette, etc.

edit: they disinvited him two minutes after this post.

I think that the GOP thinks they have a pretty good strategy with the stock markets doing well, a SCOTUS nomination lined up and Trump again courting those that would otherwise never vote Republican.
So much shit is happening that the local candidates really have to do something crazy to make headlines or for their scandals to stay in the news cycle long enough.

I think the Republicans won't win a massive victory but hold on at say a 50.01% margin. As Trump not being on the ballot himself won't bring out all the Qanon's, the same will apply to the anti-Trump vote that won't REE to the polls.
To win elections you don't only need to flip seats but also votes and that's going to be a tough challenge for both parties.

For example, I would expect the polls to show a 70/30 blow-out against Ted Fucking Cruz no matter which candidate you pit against him. But that just doesn't seem to happen.
The divide is still 50/50 and Trump is just better at courting whoever wants to show up to vote to scrap by with those small margins even if it includes the mentally insane or the Nazi's.

I've never seen the strategy of having no real party leader and splitting a party between a liberal and socialist faction that depends on the youth vote work.
If I was at the DNC I would work 24/7 to flip conservatives and just bombard the airwaves with plans for even lower taxes, a more tough stance on Iran and North Korea and Trump impeachment for being Putin's little bitch.
Turn the whole thing on its head and make him squirm. One ad could be Trump saying something dumb and Rich Evans laughing.
