Even if you try to split "Seth Rich was the leaker" away from the spicier "Seth Rich was killed for leaking" theory to feel more respectable, both Fox News and the Washington Times retracted stories they ran on the first premise.

Quote from: Yahoo News
But “Conspiracyland” quotes a source familiar with the network’s investigation saying that Fox executives grew frustrated they were unable to determine the identity of the other, and more important, source for the story: an anonymous “federal investigator” whose agency was never revealed. The Fox editors came to have doubts that the person was in fact who he claimed to be or whether the person actually existed, said the source.

Pretty sure Malia Zimmerman's still working for Fox News.

In all the intensifying of Kulturkampf it still blows my mind that there's a liberal-ish media network called The Young Turks and that's not really controversial at all except in the local Armenian diaspora.

Imo this is actually his least stupid policy idea.

I think it’s a terrible move politically, as Americans tend to like a strong dollar inexplicably, but it’s a good move for the economy.... at least in terms of trying to lessen the trade deficit.

Turnout in Kentucky in 2016 was less than 60% even though Trump promised to bring back coal. We've been down this road before.

Does Kentucky care about coal?  The industry around it is very small and concentrated in the far flung ends of the state. I think it employs less than 6000 workers now, in a state that has 240k people employed.

The decline of coal is because of two factors Trump can't control. Expanding regional power-sharing (marketplaces) and the ability of natural gas-fired electricity to dominate those markets.

So, you would have to do the unthinkable of breaking up those regional grid providers into smaller parts or putting some kind of tax on natural gas to make coal more competitive again.

Imagery like cowboys, the military, and coal miners are all critical to white kkkulture and identity. Making an appeal to those people is really about making an appeal to all the people who see themselves in those people even though they've never had a dirty job in their life. Yeah White America, have real heroes, like traders.

It's kind of ludicrous to lump that with cowboys, cops or the military who all have guns (at least so far as the popular myth goes).
There's a mystique alright to (coal) miners and it predates global warming and since it's present in most industrial countries (you might have heard of Stakhanov ?) it's not because of the gold rush image of a dashing, independent entrepreneur making it big.

Miners are actual working class heroes. Obsolete perhaps, but myths die hard. The pandering is pretty absurd but you know what they say about pictures speaking a thousand words...

And there's plenty to criticize in the myth. It's a very masculine (in the traditional sense) one and it can take some fatalist and self sacrificial overtones. But I'm always confused when leftists take aim at one of the few labor myths, especially one where huge strikes are really prominent in the mystique no matter how much you try to sanitize it. Auto factory employees, the other archetypal industrial age workers, don't seem to trigger those sort of Pavlovian hostile reactions despite being seeped in the same toxic masculinity, participating in an industry that is fucking up the planet presently & having its set of issues like semi regular incident about racism in the work place. Really, it often reads like lashing out at workers for having betrayed "the Left" instead on reflecting on why it may has lost clout in those demographics.

But heh :yeshrug

I would say that an extractive industry has different symbolic meanings in:

settler colonial states with previous inhabitants whose dispossession and oppression is fundamental to the settlement

European ethnostates / states with a dominant "nation" / common imaginary friend

Revolutionary states

But we're drifting into "Is Wario A Libertarian" - the greatest thread in the history of forums, locked by a moderator after 12,239 pages of heated debate,

Ehhhh I think a lot of the hostility is premised on the basic idiocy of the idea of bringing back coal. Auto workers are still a fundamental part of the American labor movement while coal boosterism is almost entirely nostalgia for a misremembered past that's been stripped of any connection to labor militancy. Also we're much more ready culturally to be honest about the environmental effects of coal than we are to be about the effects of car culture.

But... Is Wario a libertarian then ?

In Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 our eponymous hero is mad that Mario expropriated his castle in the last game so he decides to get a new one by going to an island (libertarians love using Robinson Crusoe to make economic arguments) that's inhabited by pirates (libertarians love Somalia even though they'll never go there) to take their wealth by force (libertarians don't believe the non-aggression principle applies to people who haven't followed the law) and sell it back to Princess Peach / Mario (libertarians are giant dads) so that he can buy a new castle. Mario expropriates the pirates' wealth after Wario had beat them up for it (see previous aside) so Wario asks a wish granting genie to give him a castle and the genie demands payment in gold / treasure before doing so which Wario gladly complies with and he is rewarded with a castle commensurate with prices you were ignorant of until that point.
