I really hate John Oliver's comedy/persona/"brand" or whatever you want to call it. How did we go from Colbert Report and Daily Show (with John Stewart) to this?

Like most aspects related to the downfall of society: slow enough over a long enough period of time that most people don't even notice.

Trump's Twitter feed is reaching new levels of insanity every day.

Today started with a shout-out to Mike Tyson after retweeting some Scavino Trump rally and Presidency fluffer videos. Which inspired him to Tweet a Trumpian biblical verse about The Plague but not before running a promotion for his golf course.
Next up was thanking the beautiful 'boaters' followed by tweeting that he was correct and intelligence told him that had they not warned him about Corona as the fake news reported.

Then he moved on to retweet David J Harris Jr's posts about the Russia hoax and Qanon stuff about Durham and the storm. Finishing up with a promo for his Fox News townhall and retweeting one of the Wank Dads crowning him the best President of all time.
The Town hall ends a weekend which started with Trump appearing on the Dan Bongino podcast, which inspired another Scott Adams '4D chess' video about Trump's response to the Biden allegations, a take which Trump then retweeted.

At this rate he'll be posting Alex Jones clips and Qanon drops by the end of next week.  :doge

Speaking of the town hall

Quote from: Mother Jones
Ventura ultimately decides that Al Gore is not really “trying to control the world.” “I know Al Gore,” he says. “I don’t think he’s out to do that.” Instead, Ventura reveals, “the hunt leads to one man”: Sir Maurice Strong, the former executive director of the United Nations Environment Program and, according to Ventura, the “wizard behind the curtain” on climate change. Wait, make that two men: Ventura also sees a culprit in Edmond de Rothschild, the billionaire banker who died earlier this year. These powerful figures are perpetuating a massive lie in order to profit from carbon trading, Ventura and his sources allege.

Ventura’s team is never able to actually talk to Strong, despite a few more secret meetings in warehouses and a trip to China, where Strong now lives. However, one of Ventura’s investigators reports via webcam that he has concluded that “Strong’s a double agent, pretending to be an environmentalist, but really he’s been working as an adviser to the Chinese government, and helping them make money off global warming.”

a decade early on the new yellow peril, not bad

looks like he got religion though: http://www.ora.tv/offthegrid/article/2015/8/4/jesse-ventura-gop-continues-to-deny-climate-change

Quote
It’s a known fact that the Earth is getting hotter. The more carbon there is in the air, the higher the temperatures are. That’s not negotiable. It’s a scientific fact in and of itself.

We’re now putting more carbon into the air than ever before. So, naturally, the temperatures have to go up.

All these deniers out there who worry about job loss and this and that ought to think about their grandchildren. Is this the world you want to leave them with?

Anti-government extremist Ammon Bundy, speaking on the steps of the state Capitol building in Boise, Idaho, on Saturday, compared government measures to slow the spread of the coronavirus to the Nazis’ genocide of Jews during World War II.

Bundy, a notorious militia leader who once organized an armed takeover of an Oregon wildlife refuge, made the absurd comparison while speaking at an “Idaho Is Open For Business” rally ― one of several anti-lockdown demonstrations held across the country demanding that governors allow businesses to reopen despite the urgent warnings of public health experts.

The Boise rally appears to have been organized, in part, by an anti-vaccination conspiracy group called Health Freedom Idaho, together with the Idaho Freedom Foundation, a powerful far-right libertarian organization in the state with ties to right-wing billionaire Charles Koch.

In a speech at Saturday’s rally, Bundy compared the temporary closure of nonessential businesses in America to the systematic torture and murder of 6 million Jews by the Nazis.

“Just look at the pictures of the Holocaust,” Bundy told the crowd of hundreds, according to a video of the event posted to YouTube. “It always amazes me how you see pictures of men and women stripped completely naked, lined up and facing a mass grave, where they are shooting them in the back of the head and falling in the grave.”

“Now the answer to that is not easy ― but it is this, and I have been there and I know for a fact that this is true,” Bundy continued. “When you have faced so much tyranny in your life, there is a point when you would rather line up naked and get shot in the head. And my friends, why we’re here today right now is to make sure that never happens!”

Quote
Bundy argued Saturday that Jews essentially let themselves be murdered by Nazis because “they thought that putting their head down and trying to not be noticed was the better way. They thought that compliance would get them through it, and it was just a period of time that they might just pass through and end up better on the other end.”

“And that is a decision that we have to make right now,” Bundy said. “Are we better to just comply?”

I want to say that I recall one reason those intersections work is because the instinct they're trained on is to accelerate and get through it which keeps traffic moving at all times, whereas in the U.S. we're literally taught to brake for anything halting the traffic flow constantly and erratically. A Soviet-born person claimed to me that they literally do speed up to make up for lost traction in the winter and I choose to believe it.

yes, if only we braked less, this would be safe enough for the united states
This is why I cut the brake lines of every car in the parking lot each day. We can all help with minor steps.

From the corona thread, I think it belongs here, too.

The world came together for a virtual vaccine summit. The U.S. was conspicuously absent.

LONDON — World leaders came together in a virtual summit Monday to pledge billions of dollars to quickly develop vaccines and drugs to fight the coronavirus.

Missing from the roster was the Trump administration, which declined to participate, but highlighted from Washington what one official called its “whole-of-America” efforts in the United States and its generosity to global health efforts.

The online conference, led by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and a half-dozen countries, was set to raise $8.2 billion from governments, philanthropies and the private sector to fund research and mass-produce drugs, vaccines and testing kits to combat the virus that has killed more than 250,000 people worldwide.

The next US President who isn't Trump should probably go on a worldwide apology tour.

Democrats were also far more likely in 2017 to believe allegations of sexual misconduct against two other Democratic politicians, then-Sen. Al Franken of Minnesota (48 percent credible) and then-Rep. John Conyers of Michigan (43 percent credible), a Morning Consult/Politico poll conducted at the time found.
