This whole "Harvey Weinstein is a major scandal for the Democrats" thing that's going around right-wing media must be one of those arguments that makes sense only if you're a Fox News viewer.
I blame Drudge. He's always had a hard-on for exposing Hollywood scandal. 20 years now.
Part of it is because they typically fund the Democrat party every election cycle and part because it gets clicks.
I think in the case of Drudge there's a totally non-political explanation.
He got his start working at CBS Studios, and at about the same time got into newsgroups, this eventually led to an e-mail/usenet newsletter he sent out of gossip he picked up at CBS and from friends around the various studios. It was pretty much nothing but Hollywood gossip but he started getting spiked stories as part of that which got him contacts at various news organizations. A few years down the road this is how he found out about Newsweek spiking the Lewinsky story and his publishing it that turned him overnight into a millionaire.
Andrew Breitbart came up through the same Hollywood low level worker jobs and as a fan of Drudge who then helped him actually put up the website and then was the one who ran it half the time before helping start Huffington Post on Drudge's recommendation.
I think it was after the 2000 Election and then 9/11 that it really became more politically focused, it was probably still 60% Hollywood/Celebrity/Media gossip before then. By the 2004 election it was like 90% political/news links.
The rumor a few years ago was that Drudge basically doesn't even run the site anymore, it's people who hope to jump from there to Breitbart and become somebody important. I just looked at it and I'm surprised it not only is shockingly subdued about the Weinstein news but the rest of the stories are just a random grab bag of news, they don't even have Breitbart style headlines. And some of the SHOCK GORE HORROR stories that are like on ABC News front page aren't even linked.
