In terms of black unemployment...are we just supposed to pretend like black unemployment has been falling for years (although apparently it increased in Jan18) and is not something Trump magically accomplished?

LA Times op-ed correctly pinpoints mass immigration, specifically illegal immigration, as a threat to black Americans.

http://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-seminara-trump-immigration-reform-african-americans-20180316-story.html

Aside: Hopefully Rand Paul and the folks in the senate do their jobs and filibuster Trump’s cabinet replacement picks. Torture has no place in American intelligence.

Read this a few hours ago too.

https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2016/03/exit-left/476190/?utm_source=fbb

Looking forward to voting for Crenshaw in the runoff. He looks so rad with his eyepatch. Pro-life, secure borders, anti-sanctuary state, pro-gun. Ticks all the boxes.

In other news I’m currently glued to the Illinois special election. I really want to know what’s going to happen as it'll probably be a good indicator of Democratic future elections. Hoping the moderate Democrat, Lipinski, wins in Illinois on Tuesday. But given Illinois Democrats trying to put him in his place and contest because “he doesn’t fit the district” he might be in trouble. Good on him for being anti-abortion and sticking to his guns. He’s got balls. Lamb should be a blueprint for the democrats going forward but they’ll struggle with the in-fighting between moderate dems and progressives. What they need to win are blue dogs like Lamb. It’s great that they acknowledged that but I doubt their ability to pursue that kind of campaigning going forward because Lamb was all about independence and didn’t toe the national democratic line. So right now in Illinois there’s two democratic narratives: “we need more support for moderate candidates to fight Trump” versus “progressivism is the future of the party.” Either way, the story will be interesting to see unfold. Good political theatre. What are they willing to sell? Their values or the midterms?
:cac :sheik :crazy :idont
I'll be voting Lipinksi out of my district as he is basically a republican.  :betty

Newman is a better fit for our area anyway. Lipinksi is only there because his daddy knew Madigan. You'd know that if you actually were following politics or from the area and not just vapid trolling.  :doge

My favorite "Democrats were the slaveowners, herp derp" bit was from Kurt Schlicter recently. Dude was talking about how his ancestors' farm was destroyed in the Civil War by an army of Democrats (Confederates).

The fact that the Democrats do not get the white vote in the former Confederate states (except maybe northern Virginia) does not seem to register with them.

Because it's a troll position that largely hinges on republicans literally believing that black people are stupid. Same reason they claim MLK was a republican.

If we're going to discuss the historical black vote, yes black voters were largely republicans after the Civil War, for obvious reasons. That began to shift in 1927; (then-Secretary Of Commerce) Herbert Hoover's botched response to the Great Mississippi Flood resulted in him losing the black vote the following year when he ran for president. Black voters later supported FDR, and supported Truman even more. The black vote spiked more democratic in 1960 due to JFK's promises, and LBJ secured the black vote for generations by making good on those promises with the CRA. Since 1968 one party has largely voted in favor of various issues that impact black lives, and one party has largely voted to actively hurt black people or interests. Those are facts.

Black voters have largely been the most practical voters in America. The black vote has been won and lost based on how they've been treated by political parties. Free the slaves? Win the vote. Let black refugees die during a flood? Lose the black vote. Promise civil rights? Win the black vote. Enact civil rights? Win the black vote. etc.

Motion: Prosecutors excluded black jurors in seven death-penalty cases

Quote
In Gates’ case, prosecutors’ notes designated prospective white jurors with a “W” and prospective black jurors with an “N.” One set of notes ranked prospective jurors on a scale of “1” to “5,” with one being the least desirable and five being the most favored to have on the jury.

These are from the late 70's in Georgia, but still. Goddam.

I'm not gonna let this go btw. Himu is on record with me praising Richard Nixon's campaign(s) as black inclusive because a few black dudes endorsed him or worked on campus campaigns for him.

The same Richard Nixon who weaponized the southern strategy and is literally on tape making multiple racist comments about black people.

IF you want to be a republican go ahead, I have no beef with that. But don't re-write history.

I'd add to that explainer, CA just got caught lying about their client list to parliament. They had originally asserted that they had never once done work for Russia or Russian backed political/business clients. And strangely enough, in what has become a theme of the Trump orbit, it turns out they lied and actually did. Also another, occasional theme, they were found out in the dumbest way possible; by listing a Russian controlled energy company as a major client on an easily attained slide presentation for potential customers.

The Story about CA is quite interesting. In short:

- Autistic data nerds helps third world would-be dictators to rig elections after the CIA leaves a void because the US is on a tight budget and uses the same tactics Obama's campaign used.
- Autistic data nerds figure out that their shit actually somewhat works, especially on developing nations.
- They figure out the big money is in US and European politics not these would be dictators.
- The methods they used are being perfected in the commercial space. Labeled like 'Growth hacking', 'big data analysis' which is essentially just stealing private data to bombard people with ads.
- They soon get in touch with people also trying to growth hack their elections such as the Brexiteers and Ted Cruz.
- Ted Cruz is defeated by Trump. However, his data operation (which was being prepared for the national stage) is kept in tact and handed over the RNC/Trump campaign
- RNC feeds the autistic nerds with all their voter data. Autistic nerds gather more and more data some times illegally.
- Trump wins in an upset, also Brexit happens. Everyone wants to claim victory, especially the nerds.
- They claim their data made Trump's win possible. Not Roger Stones' master plot 10 years in the making, Alex Jones radio shows or the Apprentice.
- Zuckerberg decides to cut-out the middle man and starts on his own political ambitions.
- With Paul Manafort in jail the political crook market is wide open for CA.
- Channel 4 contacts them as a politician from Sri Lanka looking to rig.
- The low level cronies tell them they'd never do anything that 'crosses the line' such as sending prostitutes for blackmail.
- The part bond villain, part CA CEO Alexander Nix meets with the undercover team as well. Tells them he'd get some Ukrainian girls (Hi Paul!) and someone posing as a wealthy developer to fuck things up CIA style in Sri Lanka under the guise of a front company.
- Channel 4 confronts them with the findings, they deny. Say 't was all a joke!' and/or part of a friendly conversation with a client they didn't want to embarrass.
- Facebook is worried about this and the whistle blower that figured out they used stolen data. Sends in 'legal council' to help clean the mess at CA and save Zuckerbergs presidential ambitions.
- UK government launches an investigation and tells Facebook to stand down and not wipe the servers with bleach.
- Channel 4 announces they'll air another piece of their findings tomorrow.

Yeah, these guys at CA are pretty screwed. It'll be interesting to see whether they drag anyone down with them.

They have some pretty interesting affiliations, namely Michael Flynn(was uncovered he became an "advisor" during the Trump campaign to Cambridge after he amended a government form to reflect the relationship), Steve Bannon(former vice president), and their wealthy benefactor Robert Mercer(owns Breitbart, powerful conservative billionaire). Also, they currently have an open government contract with the State Department.

Mueller had subpoenaed all emails and documents related to their work with the Trump campaign some time last year. With the cooperation of Flynn and the looming raid, Cambridge probably has to hope they didn't destroy or neglect to turn over any evidence.  Especially since they will seemingly be squeezed on two continents now.

It feels like it would be better for data scientists if they didn't just jump with an analysis. TBH, I think your people are going to have to learn how to interact with people. What if in the near future, they have to go into projects with certain goals of what private information they really want and have to figure out what is worth obtaining. Nothing makes a big company modest more than transparency enforced by regulatory burdens.

I work with large data sets in a HIGHLY regulated industry (water utilities) but all my knowledge of data science comes from what I've picked up on the e-streets. Still it's not impossible to be upfront and develop good analysis (omg the wasted resources).

Also being in a regulated industry, trying to somehow steal data to create a marketing model is just an insane concept to me.

While all of you guys are falling for the fake Cambridge Analytica news, the Seth Rich story just got its smoking gun.

Quote
As conspiracy theories swirled around the murder of Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich, lobbyist Jack Burkman took the unusual step of launching his own private investigation. A man with military and security experience stepped up to help.

Now Burkman alleges that man, Kevin Doherty, nearly killed him.

Quote
Doherty briefly worked for Burkman’s Profiling Project, which was formed to build a psychological portrait of Rich’s likely killer. Burkman was offering a six-figure reward for information on the slaying of Rich, which police have determined was most likely a random robbery but many conservatives have claimed was part of a political conspiracy.

Burkman said Doherty presented an impressive resume — ex-Marine, ex-special agent — and did good work. But tension quickly developed. In Burkman’s view, Doherty began speaking to reporters out of turn and tried to take over the investigation.

Quote
In February, Burkman had moved on to a new investigation. He had put out a call for whistleblowers in the FBI, offering $25,000 for any information exposing wrongdoing in the presidential election.

Soon, he thought he had hit the jackpot. A man reached out, describing himself as a senior FBI official with information about then-agency deputy director Andrew McCabe, who at the time was under an internal investigation for his handling of probes into Hillary Clinton. (On Friday, McCabe was fired, after an internal investigation found he had dealt improperly with the media and then lied about it. He has denied wrongdoing.)

Quote
“I thought I had the story of the decade,” Burkman recalled. His wife, Susan, was more skeptical. She warned him that she didn’t think he was dealing with the FBI. But, he said, the emails “looked super real,” containing details about the secretive Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.

The last drop was supposed to be “the big one” — the full inspector general report on McCabe, which still has not been released. Instead, when Burkman bent over to pull the papers out from under the cone, he was shot in the buttocks and thigh. As he ran out of the garage with his dachshund in his arms, he was hit by an SUV.

He said the car backed up to hit him again.

“It looked like he was coming to kill me,” Burkman said. But he said a woman watching from a window of the hotel screamed. A guard came running and the SUV sped off, Burkman said.

Quote
But Burkman said it was by authorities that Doherty was tracked down through the SUV. Burkman said police came to him in the hospital with a photo of his former employee. He didn’t even recognize Doherty at first. When he heard his name, he was shocked.

Burkman had already met with police in January, when a masked man approached his house in an SUV and hit him in the face with pepper spray. No charges have been filed in that incident.

Quote
Burkman said he is now traveling with security. But the experience has not soured him on conspiracy theories. His profiling project concluded that Rich was shot by a hired killer, and he wonders if Doherty was working for someone else.

He has not given up on investigating Rich’s death, whose family just sued Fox News for publishing a false story linking their son to WikiLeaks.

Now who could that be? Hillary Clinton??? :thinking :thinking :thinking

I worked for a third-party Facebook ads company for a while. CA didn't really do anything out of the ordinary (rather, the original app that CA bought its data from didn't.) It's basically just lookalike audiences. I think the furor now is a combo of 1. people actually realizing the sheer breadth of data FB has, 2. people realizing that FB hands that info out like candy to any third party on their platform, and 3. it being used for (conservative) political gain.

I think the furor now is a combo of 1. people actually realizing the sheer breadth of data FB has, 2. people realizing that FB hands that info out like candy to any third party on their platform, and 3. it being used for (conservative) political gain.

Well you know except them bribing officials.  :doge

And working (apparently) with the Russian government.  :doge

I meant purely in terms of their relationship with FB.

I think I can agree with this. I think the focus on it will be overblown *now* when it should have been something everyone was concerned about from the beginning. People, myself included, just put these shit services into their lives and have actively allowed this data to be collected. Not enough people ask 'what if.' Well, here we are.

Everyone likes to ask 'hey how does Facebook and Twitter make money?'

Hasn't it been known for years that facebook sells everyone's personal data?

I think that what makes this unusual is the way they mixed illegal in with legal and truly flaunted facebooks policies, and then how little Facebook did to try and stop it once they realized.

OFA doing this in a way that complies with Fb’s Policies, and FEC regulations is one thing. Trump/CA doing this using “stolen” data, and breaking FEC laws by utilizing foreign employees in cooperation with Russian state interests is another thing entirely.

Broadly speaking, IMO, these types of models and the availability of that data should be heavily regulated.

I completely agree.

What truly blew my mind is how close ad companies were able to get to a "universal profile" - basically, knowing exactly who you were no matter if you were using a phone or a laptop despite being signed out. Sophisticated digital fingerprinting is the real scary shit.

Everyone's naked but only a few people know it (and those that do are taking and selling pics of your junk.)
