I agree. Military drama is much better when it involves the actual complexities, layers, nuances, and competing self-interests of those people and institutions involved. It provides a much richer and accurate to life story I find.
It’s probably the core critique I have of the Deep State Cinematic Universe. It bills itself as non-fiction inspired writing, but lacks an understanding of the layered dynamics and complexities interwoven in the subject matter. So you end up with these simple narratives that are too far removed from reality to be accurate, but not quite fantastical or original enough to be compelling fiction on their own terms.
I’m sure you’ll keep workshopping it, but if I’m honest, I think you need to find better muses and consider challenging some first principles your holding onto with these topics. In order to hopefully better inform your future writings.
