...It's almost like a populist candidate that said "I'm here to save your jobs" and another that said "yes, the economy is fucked and your jobs are fucked. Let's try to fix that!" had a more important message than "I'm not a baffoon and willing to further the black guys policies!"
That sniping about the last election aside: Democrats (and Republicans but less so) have been a complete mess since at least the 1950-1960's. And I'm being generous there since 1) I like JFK and 2) Johnson had a big dick that I wish I could go back in time to see just to be a dick historian in our modern times.
is optimus getting into cargo pants cult?

Which is kinda downright depressing if you have many sympathies toward the rational voter theory.
Have faith in voters in 199X+, brehs.
(Not talking you Nola, I'm talking that theory)
Don’t worry, I have no naive illusions about the rational voter theory.
The idea that people are cold, calculating, self-interest weighing decision makers isn’t true in most decision-making any more than it is true in voting habits imo.
There are certainly periods in time though where the populist message falls flat, Democrats also know that all to well. People are tribal and in highly tribalized and polarized voting environments, winning elections seems to come down to mobilizing turnout of your side in key areas and lots of factors not always in your control, so in that enviorenment populist candidates make a lot of sense imo. So I get you there.
Not sure about the value judgement on the import of Trump’s message, but it’s also true the woman that had the more boring message and rhetorical style did get 3 million more votes... though I’m mostly with Benji and a slight bit of Jack on that one. Shit campaign focuses, Comey letter.
