After 8 years of "but you didn't say the magic word [radical islamic terrorism/american exceptionalism/etc]" it's pretty rich to hear them now say "well he kinda clarified what he meant so I'm satisfied"  :lol

And even if you buy that pisspoor excuse, he contradicted it immediately afterward by once again saying "it could have been anyone else, too tho."

He's been deflecting blame for the hacking away from Russia for over a year. Nobody believes he just misspoke this time.

I expect a certain amount of bullshit in my politics, but the willingness of so many people to pretend to believe the most obvious lies is exhausting.

The Israel-Palestine one is really dumb, and it's sorta telling that her "i'm not a geopolitics expert" is supposed to be some kind of dagger to the campaign. The House has no geopolitics experts, even by the standards the House itself sets there's really only like 25 or so, and she doesn't need to be on those committees, she can be like every other member and serve on committees that interest her and that she knows things about. (In theory obviously.) Then they rely on the experts within their party, or even of both parties, to inform their vote. (I already said in theory!!)

The main scandal here is how inferior the new Firing Line is, she's sitting forward at the edge of her seat, never once does she lean back with the clipboard and stick the pen in the side of her mouth. Her eyes don't even sparkle when she hears the "oh you just stepped in it" moment she's going to tear them down with. And no examiners? No random college students sitting on the floor?!? THIS ISN'T TRUE TO BUCKLEY'S VISION AT ALL. And what's with that crappy set? Is this filmed in a Fairfield Inn lobby? No wonder Sir Wesley of Snipes didn't want to send his tax dollars for this kind of PBS garbage.

Vote Joe Crowley, for Working Families
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez hurts the party, Congress and even America.
By Joe Lieberman
July 17, 2018 6:57 p.m. ET
Appeared in the July 18, 2018, print edition.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s surprise primary victory over Rep. Joe Crowley seems likely to hurt Congress, America and the Democratic Party. It doesn’t have to.

Because the policies Ms. Ocasio-Cortez advocates are so far from the mainstream, her election in November would make it harder for Congress to stop fighting and start fixing problems. Thanks to a small percentage of primary votes, all of the people of New York’s 14th Congressional District stand to lose a very effective representative in Washington.

Fortunately, Joe Crowley and the voters in his district can prevent this damage. On Election Day, his name will be on the ballot as the endorsed candidate of the Working Families Party. But for Mr. Crowley to have a chance at getting re-elected, he will have to decide if he wants to remain an active candidate. I hope he does.

...

Ms. Ocasio-Cortez didn’t speak much about foreign policy during the primary, but when she did, it was from the DSA policy book—meaning support for socialist governments, even if they are dictatorial and corrupt (Venezuela), opposition to American leadership in the world, even to alleviate humanitarian disasters (Syria), and reflexive criticism of one of America’s great democratic allies (Israel).

She has received the most attention for calling to “Abolish ICE,” Immigration and Customs Enforcement. This makes no sense unless you no longer want any rules on immigration or customs to be enforced. I have not heard anyone say that. Nonetheless, at least three credible candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination rushed to endorse Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s position.

...

Joe Crowley’s re-election would be evidence that Democrats are capable of governing again. His voting record shows that Mr. Crowley is a progressive. I know him as a bridge builder and problem solver, which is exactly what Congress needs more of in both parties.

Mr. Crowley faces a difficult choice. I know because I faced the same one in 2006 after losing a Democratic primary. I ran as an independent because I wanted all the voters to decide whether I deserved to continue to serve them in the Senate. It was a risk, but I concluded it was worth it to know that I had taken my fight for the kind of government I believed in as far as I possibly could.

For the sake of Congress and our country, I hope Joe Crowley will give all the voters of his district the opportunity to re-elect him in November—and I hope they find his name on their ballots.

I'm going to agree with benji here. You don't want to elect a complete shut in imbecile but expecting foreign affairs expertise as a baseline for parliamentary representatives seems unrealistic. Most of their work will be domestic issues. I'd rather they have a good handle of that.

It's only really important for the President (or Prime Minister depending on the regime), the Foreign Affairs and some other Cabinet positions.

It's much more efficient to have experts and administrations solely dedicated to it informing them than to expect every representative to be a Renaissance Man (especially if you don't want politics to be the monopoly of a closed caste of professionals).

I took a look at a little bit of data from bls and FrED and everything in that tweet is basically supportable enough that anybody dismissing it out of hand is showing their ass. I suspect that the real answer is somewhat more nuanced, but at the very least someone will have to take a few series out of government websites and do some math to get a better answer.

Here’s what I can deduce from like 20 minutes of looking.

- for non-management employees, hourly wages were up barely 1% in inflation adjusted dollars from the end of the recession through 2016. The latest employment report said wages were down 2% from 1 year ago. Net-net that’s roughly flat to slightly down per hour of work.

- but that’s an average, not a median. I don’t have the data but I suspect there is Bifurcation in pay changes were the most skilled or in-demand non-management employees are getting decent raises, since certain sectors (housing, probably health care) have workers shortages and high demand. That might mean fast wood workers (or whatever) are getting fucked.

- the overall proportion of the labor force that is working two jobs is down a bit from the recession, but has basically stayed flat since the recession ended. But again this doesn’t tell the whole story.

- the bls doesn’t calculate rates for the individual demographic buckets, they just report raw numbers, but I believe one could do it themselves if they cared to (I didn’t take the time). What I can say by looking at the numbers is that the raw numbers of people 25-34 and 55+ working 2+ Jobs has risen sharply since the recession, like over 10%.

- there are a few possibilities:
1) you are just seeing a demographic bubble and those numbers are purely a reflection of the relative size of Boomers and millennials to the size of the overall population but if you were to calc the rates yourself they are unchanged. The median age of the population continued Togo up during this time, so I’m not 100% how much I actually believe this.
2) something is happening where one or both of those groups is now forced to work two jobs (or in the case of boomers, forced to work when 10 years ago they would have just retired)

She might be wrong, but she definitely is not grossly wrong, and nobody that has had these hot takes looking at her statement has done the work to be able to dismiss her statement (at least as it is in that tweet) out of hand.

Edit: also she’s probably going to be the hottest congresswoman. We need a sexy latinx@ to replace no legs Tammy duckworth, *gag*. Tired of looking at her ghost cankles.
