All the dumb shit in the otherforums thread reminded me of something I heard on npr a couple of weeks ago. Some dude was arguing against the guaranteed jobs program El Bernie was proposing, saying that "there's no way to guaranteed that many jobs, besides no one wants to work for the federal government".

Isn't the federal government the largest employer in the US?

Approximately 20 million people are public employees [local, state, and federal government], which is between 15% and 20% of the workforce.

Way more than amazon.

I think Walmart is the largest private employer. Something like 40% of trump supporters work there.

Amazon 150k
Walmart is 2.2 million

https://www.politico.com/news/2019/10/30/nunes-acolyte-misrepresented-himself-to-trump-as-ukraine-expert-061763

Quote
But he was instructed “at the last second” not to attend the debriefing, Vindman told lawmakers, because Trump’s advisers worried it might confuse the president: Trump believed at the time that Kashyap Patel, a longtime Nunes staffer who joined the White House in February and had no discernible Ukraine experience or expertise, was actually the NSC’s top Ukraine expert instead of Vindman.

Vindman testified that he was told this directly by his boss at the time, NSC senior director for European and Russian affairs Fiona Hill.

Hill told Vindman that she and national security adviser John Bolton thought it best to exclude Vindman from the debriefing to avoid “an uncomfortable situation,” he said.

It’s funny because if it’s not funny, it would just be really depressing. :lol

Quote
Billing himself as one of President Trump’s top fundraisers, Michael Hodges told fellow payday lenders recently that industry contributions to the president’s reelection campaign could be leveraged to gain access to the Trump administration.

“Every dollar amount, no matter how small or large it is” is important, Hodges, founder of Advance Financial, one of the country’s largest payday lenders, said during a 48-minute webcast, obtained by The Washington Post.

“For example, I’ve gone to Ronna McDaniel and said, ‘Ronna, I need help on something,’ ” Hodges said, referring to the chair of the Republican National Committee. “She’s been able to call over to the White House and say, ‘Hey, we have one of our large givers. They need an audience. … They need to be heard and you need to listen to them.’ So that’s why it’s important.”

(in the voice you'd use for the punchline of The Aristocrats joke) Populism!

Democrats had been flooding Twitter with fundraising ads.
Now Twitter has denied them advertising space even before the first primary vote.

Meanwhile Trump World is not using ads but 30 y/o boomer memelords, conspiracy nuts and trolls to spread their message, which are not restricted by this policy.
Twitter has pretty much doubled down on boosting the bois at the expense of the progressives and democrats. Denying them a chance to play catch-up.

https://www.cnn.com/2019/10/31/tech/facebook-fact-checking-political-ads/
Quote
New York (CNN Business)One of the companies that Facebook hired to fact-check posts on its platform will propose a change to Facebook's policy allowing politicians to run ads containing falsehoods, CNN Business has learned.

Lead Stories, one of the fact-checking organizations hired by Facebook (FB) after the 2016 election to help curb the platform's misinformation problem, will propose that fact-checkers vet ads from politicians and that those fact-checks then be reviewed by a new nonpartisan blue-ribbon panel.

Lead Stories will make the proposal at a meeting for Facebook's fact-checkers at Facebook's Menlo Park headquarters next week, Alan Duke, the co-founder and editor-in-chief of Lead Stories, told CNN Business Thursday.

"There is an urgent need for a fair method to identify egregiously false political ads in 2020," Duke, himself a former CNN journalist, said. "Our experience as fact checkers shows me that too many people are too fast to fall for disinformation."

Lead Stories is one of six fact-checking organizations Facebook works with in the United States. When a link or Facebook post is deemed false by the fact-checkers, clarifiying information is added to it and it is "downranked" on Facebook, meaning it should be seen by less people.
Name sounds familiar...

Oh, wait:
Quote
During Tuesday’s debate, the DNC will use a software tool called Trendolizer to track trending disinformation. Trendolizer — think TweetDeck but with lots of fancy graphs — scrapes data from social media and across the internet to surface hidden content that is on the cusp of going viral. Its “Hotness” filter alerts users when something new is about to take off. If it’s potentially damaging misinformation about a Democratic candidate, DNC Tech flags it for its “counter-disinformation contact” on the affected campaign and recommends that they reach out to one of the third-party fact-checkers that Facebook relies upon—such as The Associated Press, Poynter, or FactCheck.org.
wait a minute...
https://www.poynter.org/fact-checking/2017/trendolizer-wants-to-be-the-tweetdeck-for-fake-news/
Quote
For users to get the most out of the tool, however, he thinks users will have to take the time to build source sets that are relevant to the areas they want to monitor. “People need to know what they are looking for,” he said.

This is a key challenge of debunking fake news: You never really know where the next big viral story will come from next. Inaccurate claims by public figures come from more predictable places like speeches, TV interviews, press briefings, Twitter. Viral hoaxes, on the other hand, can come seemingly from nowhere.

The debunking site Snopes has also tested Trendolizer. Founder David Mikkelson said that “in general, fact-checkers do need tools that will help them spot misinformation faster.”
https://www.journalism.co.uk/news/lead-stories-is-debunking-misinformation-starting-to-trend-on-social-media/s2/a701180/
Quote
The small team behind Lead Stories, a website highlighting trending stories on social media, moved towards debunking popular articles online a couple of months ago.

Maarten Schenk, who developed Trendolizer, the search tool powering Lead Stories, spoke to Journalism.co.uk about his process of finding these articles and looking for red flags that might point out they have no basis in fact.

Trendolizer, which is backed by Alan Duke and Perry Sanders, tracks between 300,000 and 400,000 links per day, assessing the number of likes they receive per hour to determine their popularity.
Quote
Lead Stories has been linked to as a source of debunks by the BBC and BuzzFeed.

At this stage, access to Trendolizer is priced at request, although a network of websites by Schenk, such as StoryTide or Trump Tide, publish links to the top 30 stories on a number of topics at any given time.

He is also hoping to find new partners for Trendolizer, to help expand its reach. "If we get 500 likes, we haven't made a dent in the story," he said.
wait even more...

History

Founded in 2015, Lead Stories is a fact checker and hoax/rumor debunker that uses the International Fact-Checking Network fact-checkers’ code of principles as a guide for all fact checking. According to their about page “Lead Stories is mainly written by Maarten Schenk and Alan Duke. Maarten is based in Europe (Belgium) while Alan is in the United States of America (California). Administrative and legal affairs are handled by Perry R. Sanders of Sanders Law Firm in Colorado Springs.”

More from the about page: “Since February 2019 we are actively part of Facebook’s partnership with third party fact checkers. Under the terms of this partnership we get access to listings of content that has been flagged as potentially false by Facebook’s systems or its users and we can decide independently if we want to fact check it or not. In addition to this we can enter our fact checks into a tool provided by Facebook and Facebook then uses our data to help slow down the spread of false information on its platform. Facebook pays us to perform this service for them but they have no say or influence over what we fact check or what our conclusions are, nor do they want to.”

Funded by / Ownership

According to their about page Lead Stories LLC is a Colorado company formed by Maarten Schenk (Belgium), Alan Duke (California), Perry R. Sanders (Colorado) and John C. Goede (Florida). The company is self-funded with no outside investors and relies on advertising revenue and license fees for the use of the Trendolizer™ engine and is also funded with revenue derived from Facebook’s third party fact checking partnership.

Something that got Armenians mad apparently.
Voted "present" on a resolution recognizing the Armenian genocide, then said her problem with it was merely the timing:
Quote
Omar said in a statement Tuesday that while she believes accountability is “paramount” for human rights abuses, including genocide, such acknowledgments should not be “used as cudgel in a political fight.” She pointed to the slave trade and genocide of American Indians as examples of atrocities that receive too little recognition. She later defended her vote on Twitter, reiterating that she acknowledges the World War I-era Armenian genocide and that her concern was “not with the substance of this resolution.”

“My issue was with the timing and context. I think we should demand accountability for human rights abuses consistently, not simply when it suits our political goals,” said Omar, a champion of Palestinian rights on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. “My focus has and will always be to make sure our foreign policy is consistent, coherent and my votes will as well.”
