That was my overall point about the tea party, but you're conflating time periods here. Reagan Republicans were not the same as tea party ppl. Many of them had a previous voting history of Reform party or Libertarian party preferences.

Southern Strategy talk is just a way for democrats to deflect criticism that they were the stewards for the South and Rust Belt cities that were stagnant or quickly eroding for decades post 50s. Decades of this ineffectual governing and corruption led many to vote Reagan instead. But dems don't want to acknowledge that... they'd rather just blame it on racism.

Speaking of this thread's Ahmari-French debate, when I read this story--which I'm sure was linked and thoroughly discussed here--I couldn't help but smile when it took a sudden but entirely predictable turn.
