To reiterate what I was trying to circle back to each time you derailed things:

I don't believe this is about health insurance costs. This is about Christian grift and anti-Obamacare sentiment fermented by News Corp and the GOP.

"We can't afford real insurance."

*wastes half a grand a month on fake insurance*

:crazy
seems like it was about insurance costs. also i never quoted you but you sure seemed to take offense at my response.

i took nothing from 0 to 100. you said the dude should get a real job so he could get insured and also said you were uninsured. i simply repeated your own line back at you. if you find it hurtful you probably shouldn't be saying it about other people.

my takes

health care is too expensive for a lot of people

this is in part because of the system left in place by the aca

the aca as it was actually signed by obama has been kneecapped several times by the gop in the supreme court, congress, and state legislatures in ways that show up in this story (lack of medicaid expansion, continuation of junk "insurance" plans, religious exemptions)

there's an argument that a single payer system would be more politically resistant to this but I wouldn't be too sanguine about that

the kid still qualified for a government program that "covers all costs" so his illness isn't the best example of holes in the safety net

that the family did not realize this right away is a point against opt-in, means-tested programs, but also likely reflects a conservative state being lax in making people aware of their benefits

in a culture where the church is given more deference and trust than the government, it is understandable that people would sign up for these plans even if they weren't a good idea (on the other hand, fully grown adults personal responsibility vs. root causes blah blah)

andrex and nacho's slapfight isn't that entertaining at this point

heath care and health insurance being too expensive for a lot of people was all i was trying to point out.

mocking the dude for spending $500 a month on whatever thing he bought is whatever but most likely via marketplace he'd probably be needing 2x+ that amount to cover his family. "real job" or not, that's getting pretty absurd.

i just happened to have recent experience buying insurance from the marketplace...and $500 doesn't get you shit. we're paying $400 for the bare minimum coverage that isn't really covering anything. seems just about as effective as the christian scam plan tbh.

Do they really bet on Bolton testifying 'against' Trump?
Bolton will use 3 hours of free air time on international TV to tell viewers that their leaders are cowards preventing Freedom and Democracy in Iran.

Sorry breh.

wrt to marketplace plans versus the ones in this article, there is the principle difference of cost maximums. The former have felt worse and worse as the years go by but reading about the latter gave me unpleasant memories of the good ol' days when "real" insurance could be about as real as those plans.

yeah at the very least she is covered for stuff just in case but goddamn if reading the descriptions for the plans in the marketplace isn't the most depressing thing. stuff like "this plan works if you have X prescriptions / see the doctor X times a year. also this will be your out of pocket costs" already makes it feel limiting and shitty from the get go.

this is even without needing to figure out which pharmacies she can go to for the best prices and if the in-house "discount plan" is better than the insurance price.

e: this is turning more into a struggle posting than politics posting but it is a big part of the reason i think healthcare needs to change here. we're lucky that we can pay her premiums. there's plenty of people out there that are above the medicaid cutoff but can't afford the marketplace prices and just have to suck it up and not go to the doctor.

Apparently there was some back channel diplomacy involving Russia, Turkey, various NATO countries etc. .
They basically asked Iran what it wanted for 'no revenge' on either US, Israeli or EU assets.

When Bibi distanced himself from the strike today, saying it was an american issue, everyone knew 'something' was up.
The Iranians apparently wanted the US out of Iraq, some reports are even going further saying that the US is not only withdrawing from Iraq but the 'region'.
Which probably relates to Syria. This is also why Iraq asked the likes of China (but also some NATO countries not US) if they would be willing to help out with Iraqi security if necessary.

Trump will likely frame this as an incredible deal.  :trumps

Quote
Some Americans could lose Social Security Disability Insurance benefits under a recent Trump administration proposal ― a change that could affect thousands of people but that has received little attention since it was first floated in November.

Under the proposed change, the government would look more closely at whether certain disability insurance recipients still qualify as “disabled” after they’ve already been awarded those benefits. While recipients already have to demonstrate their continuing disability every few years, the proposal would ramp up the examinations, potentially running still-eligible beneficiaries out of the program.

The extra reviews will help “maintain appropriate stewardship of the disability program,” the administration said in the proposal, arguing current rules fail to account fully for the possibility of medical improvement.

It’s just one of several unilateral moves the Trump administration has made against social programs that make it easier for people to survive without labor market income. The proposals may save the government a few dollars, but they also send a political message that President Trump is cracking down on the “takers” Republicans have vilified for decades.
