i think most of the time it's rooted in negative experiences with some overzealous vegan one has interacted with in real lifei made a thread on gaf about my sister's then-husband refusing to eat at the same table during family dinner because we were eating fish (he and my sister had a vegan alternative). "i can't just sit there and watch you eat those individuals"my sister is still a vegan, but not as preachy about it. she tells me that while the vast majority of vegans are completely functional people, there are those extremists who ruin it for everyone else. apparently, there is frequently drama in the facebook groups she's a member of, where some people will try to cancel others if they ever find out about someone ever making an exception, even if it's by accident
