According to sources, an investor group aligned with his son Don Jr. and the Dallas-based Hicks family has acquired a major stake in One America News Network, the fledgling conservative cable-news channel that features hosts like Jack Posobiec, a chief promoter of the Pizzagate conspiracy. “[RNC co-chair] Tommy Hicks and Don Jr. have been looking to buy a station for Trump TV,” said one source briefed on the talks. “This is all about building a Fox competitor. Trump is really aiming to take down Fox,” the person briefed on the deal told me. (A person close to Hicks said he resigned his position from the family business when he joined the RNC and isn’t involved in the OANN deal).

During impeachment, OANN distinguished itself by its brazen airing of pro-Trump propaganda. OANN ran a three-part series hosted by Rudy Giuliani promoting Trump’s conspiracy that it was Ukraine, not Russia, that meddled in the 2016 election. Former Trump campaign aide Michael Caputo—the current spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services—hosted a prime-time special titled: The Ukraine Hoax: Impeachment, Biden Cash, Mass Murder.

Sources said the deal has been dragging on for months, and hasn't yet closed. In January the Wall Street Journal reported that Hicks Equity Partners was in talks to invest $250 million to acquire OANN from parent company Herring Networks Inc. Sources told me OANN president Charles Herring was asking $300 million for the channel, a price the Trump group felt was too high (one source said the final price was around $200 million). It’s unclear whether Don Jr. invested Trump family funds in the deal or was given equity. The infusion of cash will allow OANN to improve production values and expand its modest distribution of 35 million homes (Fox News is available in more than 90 million homes).

“While Don has long enjoyed a close friendship with Tommy Hicks and his family, he is not part of any investment group looking to acquire OANN,” a spokesperson for Donald Trump Jr. said in a statement. “Should the Hicks family acquire the network, Don has no doubt that they will make OANN an even bigger success.”
Quote
For Trump, the network serves as both a tactical weapon in the 2020 campaign and a strategic hedge in case he needs a new platform after November. One source told me that if Trump loses, he could use OANN as his post-presidential television platform to host shows. Controlling a network has been something Trump has been mulling since the 2016 election. Thinking he would lose, per the source, Trump dispatched his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, to raise money to launch Trump TV. According to the source, Trump considered buying the Weather Channel, then owned by Blackstone, and converting it into a Trump TV network. The deal didn’t go forward because Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman wanted $450 million, far more than the $300 million Trump was willing to pay. (A person close to Kushner denies this. A Blackstone spokesperson also denies the account.)

“Trump’s big thing was always to own a network and be a multibillionaire,” the source said. “If Trump loses, he can be on OANN all the time. And before he leaves office, he has months to pump it up.”

I would just like to point out that before Mike Pence was selected as VP, he wanted to start a state run propaganda news agency where all news to be disseminated had to be approved of by him or his committee of selected officials, and the idea was that they'd basically co-opt all the local television affiliates who would then get all of their news from his agency of pre-approved only news stories.

Mike Pence is horrible but that's hardly the worst reason.

OANN is for people who think Fox News is too liberal.

Actually it's kind of strange he hasn't formed his own network since that was actually the reason he ran for president in the first place and was testing it out right before the election in 2016. I guess the lawyers stepped in and told him absolutely not while you're president.
They basically had access to Fox News whenever they wanted for a few years there and that was the easier route especially while in office, but Fox News has cut back on their time (especially the rest of the family and "allies" not Trump himself) and even allowed criticism so they responded with this. They probably also came to realize that his term in office might be ending so they should start looking back into the idea of their own. It's not like they can buy Fox News.

Yeah, pretty much my thoughts. He's gonna milk his term(s) for the rest of his life business-wise though. "OFFICIAL PRESIDENTIAL MERCHANDISE!!!!"

lol from that second interview:
Quote
Q. Nikole Hannah-Jones, the lead writer and leader of the 1619 Project, includes a statement in her essay—and I would say that this is the thesis of the project—that “anti-black racism runs in the very DNA of this country.”

A. Yes, I saw that too. It does not make very much sense to me. I suppose she’s using DNA metaphorically.

those interviews are actually good and in esp the mcpherson one you get a glimpse that the kerfuffle’s indicative of a deeper division in the historiography, rather than a pitched battle between uninformed journalists and judicious experts. and, idk, i kinda find the performative bewilderment at afro-pessimism by silent generation white intellectuals just a little distasteful?

also p sure cruz just googled “historian 1619 project”

I honestly haven't paid much attention to it but if this is true about 1619:
Quote
that Lincoln was a racist and that the Civil War therefore was unrelated to the fight to abolish slavery;
Quote
central premises of the 1619 Project: ... the two seminal events of American history—the Revolution and Civil War—were either opposed or unrelated to the liberation of the slaves.
I now am going to search for Thomas Woods' opinions on it.

edit: he doesn't seem to think much of it despite this I don't think:

This is why people like Bill Maher are fighting the wrong battle. They think that Trump won't leave office willingly when instead he'll be glad to leave when the economy turns sour.
All he has to do is spit fire on Sleepy Joe from his Mar A Lago resort. He'll channel all the anger from his supporters to Trump TV. Plus he'll have access to guests the other channels can only hope for.
Trump TV with an exclusive interview with Kim Jong Un about the ongoing tensions between the United States and North Korea.

After 4 years they'll be back in the ring with Ivanka or Don Jr. to take the country back. In fact, I can even see them completely take-over or split the GOP by forming their own 'Trump Party'.
Trump was also caught discussing a new reality TV show with Mark Burnett who will be a big part in working on the programming for this Trump TV Network.
They don't necessarily have to win the election for the brand a one time loss might even be better  :doge

So about all this Jesse Ventura speculation, isn't it too late in the primary process for him to get enough delegates? ???

benjipwns

~40% of the Green delegates will not be assigned through primaries as none for those states were ever scheduled, this could possibly be more depending on how many more primaries they actually hold.

The Libertarian Party situation is similar, plus someone, like say Amash, can simply win at the Convention as delegates are not bound.

In neither party is anyone remotely close to the number of delegates needed.

So the party elites and superdelegates are going to force their choice down the voters throats, even though the nominee they picked last time lost badly? Sounds like they haven't learned their lesson.

Fine, just throw your vote away on a party that already has mandatory ballot access. Some of us don't have that level of privilege.

I believe it was Bannon that reported or leaked that Kushner on occasion blurted out: "I'm a real-estate guy Donald, I don't know a fucking thing about politics or how to run a country" when the campaign turned into a dumpster fire.
And in 2018, when Trump was in his hooking up with strong tough generals phase he actually wanted them to leave

Quote
Privately, some aides have expressed frustration that Mr. Kushner and his wife, the president’s daughter Ivanka Trump, have remained at the White House, despite Mr. Trump at times saying they never should have come to the White House and should leave. Yet aides also noted that Mr. Trump has told the couple that they should keep serving in their roles, even as he has privately asked Mr. Kelly for his help in moving them out.

But we all know how that ended. The family turned Trump against Kelly and used the Mueller investigation to get rid of all the 'traitors' and now Kushner is acting President.

btw, just so everyone is clear, I don't have an issue with justice democrats forming a super pac. I'm mad that there was four years of politically inexperienced people deluding themselves into thinking that elections don't take money or that the bernie sanders' fundraising strategy was a reasonable strategy for the rest of the ballot. and then I had to sit through people absolutely dragging Elizabeth Warren over and over again because she said stuff like "we need to use money to win the election because the other side has money and it's a real advantage, and after that we can and should seal the gates." Just a bunch of needless internecine conflict that helped make the primaries unbearable.

but also I am mad that the insurgent radicals are deciding they're gonna play big money politics now, this election is so cursed

Warren shouldn't have made such a big deal about having a PAC if she wasn't willing to stick to it as things got rough but the "aha! she was a corporate candidate all along!" was super dumb.

Thinking of all the money that got sunk into the primaries just so we could wind up with Joe Biden, and how many progressive candidates for local and state offices could have had their whole campaigns paid for with it. How many Larry Krasners could we have gotten elected for that price tag?

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The optimistic side of this is presidential campaigns drive attention in a way that's unique in American politics, so besides the usual Overton Window stuff there's a generation of young left-ish people with some practical experience in campaigning and organizing.

While I understand the frustration of Democrats like Charlotte Clymer and Cenk Uygur with Republican leaders, we should not succumb and lash out against our fellow American citizens in red states, who deserve our support regardless.
