Ooops I Hadid it again.

Is progressive property tax a thing anywhere?

edit:
Quote
In its 2018 budget, B.C.'s provincial government proposed to make property taxation progressive: the tax rate would increase along with property value. Current practice simply multiplies the property value with a uniform "mill rate." Starting in 2019, properties valued over $3 million will pay an extra 0.2% on the value exceeding $3 million, and a further 0.2% on the value exceeding $4million.

Use the extra money collected for guillotines.

Dipshit reactionaries capped property tax rates here.

Property tax is disgusting and only creates a bigger gap between classes.

Just like inheritance tax.

Small sums or single property owners should be exempt from this crap.

Rich people often have a large portion of their wealth in property. Land that just sits around and appreciates because there is a shortage of housing.

I'm okay with getting rid of property taxes if height restrictions on multifamily buildings is also removed.

Oh the rich should be taxed for sure

Im talking about hard working blue collar people that want to leave something for their kids, not 10 properties and millions, but a normal family house and maybe a few grand

I don't have a strong position on the subject, but property taxes are the major source of revenue for municipalities in Canada (I believe the same is true of counties in the US), as Canadian municipalities don't have power to levy direct and indirect taxes, such as corporate, income, and sales taxes. Sales taxes are more regressive than property taxes.

Although property taxes are a bit regressive, they can be made more progressive with higher rates for higher-valued properties. Kara posted a link showing that this isn't really possible in California as there is a cap of 1% of its assessed value, and the assessed value may only go up to 2% per year. The average price of house went from 70,890.00 in 1978 to $450,990 in 2004. Because of the 2% cap on the increase of the assessed value, that means a property owned by the same person would have an assessed value of just $116,302.56 in 2004 instead of $450,990, meaning the most property tax levied would be $1,163.02.

Since this thread became one about taxes: the estate tax is an income tax levied on deferred income that was realized by involuntary conversion (death). There's nothing wrong with one assessed in a progressive manner.

What's the tax rate on gifts? I've heard that rich peeps will give away a lot of their property near the end of their life to avoid estate taxes.

18% to 40% on taxable gifts iirc.

You can gift to charities, political organizations, a de minimis amount annually to anyone, and your spouse without incurring tax but generally speaking the gift tax and estate tax are unified to prevent avoidance.

For example, the intentionally defective grantor trust shields appreciating assets from the estate tax but the process still requires the grantor to pay gift tax on the transfer and pay income tax on the assets annually.

quite a few people are miffed that this single picture about the great green blob of "the West" as a big ol' gated community doesn't have like 300 other little red lines in South Sudan and whatnot.

to them, I say: uhh, yah.
personally my main complaint is including the Korean border, since "warzone technically" :lol

also the Finnish-Russian border is sorta unfair, the Soviets built it, and it's not really guarded the whole length (especially by the Finns in comparison to how far the Russians guard it including inwards) because it's frozen wilderness for much of the year

i'm surprised Singapore is the only Top 50 city outside it but not knowing the qualifications i could see reasons a number of Central/South American cities that normally do well on these lists might fall just short (mainly high crime/poverty areas), same for some other select cities around the world (like i imagine China got shutout due to pollution, though figured HK would score well enough), bit surprised Edmonton didn't make it seemed like that was making every list for a couple years (and what are those two US cities east of DC?)

Funny you should say that.

Quote
One thing that particularly troubled him was that Americans had begun to remove the human element from the assassination process. One of the few things known about the Kill List is that it’s compiled in part by algorithm.

n 2014, former CIA and NSA director Michael Hayden said in a public debate, “We kill people based on metadata.”

According to multiple reports and leaks, death-by-metadata could be triggered, without even knowing the target’s name, if too many derogatory checks appear on their profile. “Armed military aged males” exhibiting suspicious behavior in the wrong place can become targets, as can someone “seen to be giving out orders.” Such mathematics-based assassinations have come to be known as “signature strikes.”

Quote
(S)he added that Kareem seeks only “his birthright… a timely assertion of his due process rights under the Constitution to be heard before he might be included on the Kill List and his First Amendment rights to free speech before he might be targeted for lethal action”.
