stost strikes again:

Quote
But upgrading dozens of aging treatment facilities could cost $14 billion, which would double or triple ratepayers’ water bills, White said in an interview.

“It’s a multibillion-dollar Bay Area issue due to stost that needs to be thought through very carefully, taking the science into effect,” she said. “There’s all of sorts of different treatments, and none of them are cheap.”

No need to program NPCs when you can just hire a poor Filipino man for 25 cents a day to walk back and forth and tell fishing stories for 24 hours a day.

Went to Whole Foods yesterday (shut up) and Lord of the Rings ads were all over. Got a parcel from Amazon today, it’s Lord of the Rings themed. My Ring doorbell saw me leaving so my Roomba zoomed over and blocked the door. Alexa played the “you shall not pass!” sound clip and turned on my Fire TV. Tried to cheat it by reading my kindle, but a message popped up telling me to look at the TV. All in all, not bad. Alexa is currently playing the audible audiobook of LOTR and won’t let me turn it off. But at least my AirPods are blocking the noise. Only gotta deal with See season 3 ads pumped in every half hour.

THE HEADLINE I'VE BEEN WAITING YEARS FOR:

Facebook scrambles to escape stock's death spiral as users flee, sales drop

No wonder, Facebook advertising is just shit now.

I recently started boosting some video posts for a campaign I'm running and noticed how shit the reach is unless you start pumping some actual budget into it. It's been about 5 years since I did it last and holy shit have they nerfed it. You used to be able to sling a few dollars at a post and get some good results, now it's just dead.

Headline: "users flee"

Article:
Quote
The number of daily active users in the U.S. and Canada has fallen in the past two years, from 198 million in mid-2020 to 197 million in the second quarter of this year. Globally, user numbers are up about 10% over that stretch and are expected to increase 3% a year through 2024, according to FactSet estimates.

Global numbers are always going to go up, but US numbers are where the prestige is and what Wall Street pays attention to. US numbers are the canary in the coal mine, or so the thinking goes. Same for Netflix's woes, they're trying to offset US declines with global expansion, which looks nice on paper (or in hasty PR statements explaining why things are Just Fine, Promise) but US users will always be far, far more valuable to stockholders and also advertisers (even advertisers outside the US).

The Facebook Monster has finally stopped growing, it's the turn of the tide. Now we just need MySpace Tom to return like Gandalf the White.

alright you made me curious I'm playing it right now

this is a really shitty second life clone, endless miles of random trash people have thrown down onto plots, weird billboards and "under construction" abstract cubes, without another user anywhere in sight

We tried this with Second Life. It didn't work then because people who have time for this shit have no life in the real world and transfer that energy to the virtual world. Then the corporates tried to muscle in and anyone doing anything interesting left. The same thing is happening here.

If anything Second Life and its spiritual successor VR Chat seem stronger than ever.  This is just a classic case of people not being down with The Man.

yeah second life is still trucking along just fine, even though they monetized it from the start and some people became shitty land barons it wasn't that exploitative

I liked the idea of a game you're playing where you can edit and code your own objects within the game, with whatever assets attached that you want, like a live always-on collaborative game maker (when others were willing to use it like that)

Second Life was supposed to revolutionise everything from professional training to dating to work meetings and more. It didn't. This metaverse shit won't either.
