Say what you will about him now that he's 64 going on what seems like 85, but Cornell West's degrees wouldn't be considered "paperweight" degrees under traditional or conservative education, especially as they came from the Ivy's in the 1970s during the Grade Inflation Pause. His PhD is in Philosophy.

He's always been employed by the Divinity College's because he considered himself a Christian first (why he rejected the Black Marxist movements and the Black Panthers in the 60s and 70s), and then academic inertia kicked in for the rest. His views may have shifted slightly since then. Coates’ Black panther is one of the most boring comics I’ve ever read. God it’s awful.

Coates is somebody who writes about hopelessness very eloquently. His whole message can be boiled down to “white supremacy is terrible... but it is what it is”.
