+ A promotion and raise.  The work is stressful as hell and each day I feel like I'm /)(\ close to getting fired but I'm also fortunate to have the opportunity.
+ I've been with the same girl for about seven months now.
+ I've had a lot of fun with video games recently.  Not sure why but for the longest while I only gave a shit about playing the latest Musou game.

+ Got a 26% raise by switching jobs. 🤑
+ Got a new apartment that's closer to my job and has everything I've ever wanted, including a Dunkin Donuts next door. ☕️

+ Hosted my first party and it was absolutely amazing. 🎉
+ Traveled internationally for the first time! Fuck the Habs though. 🇺🇸

Nay:

- By moving to a new place, I'm losing my roommate who has become my literal best friend. 😭
- Switching jobs after five years means I'm no longer in daily contact with many of my other close friends either. 😿
- Got broken up with for the first time, ending my first gay relationship. 💔
- Barely swam this year and actually gained some weight. 😮
- Haven't developed my film skills any compared to a year ago. 🎥
- Still haven't started piano lessons. 🎹

Gay:

This is the year I finally moved into full adulthood, which has its pros and cons. I'm scared of what's to come, but I'm just as excited. Overall, I end 2017 feeling much more hopeful and enthusiastic than 2016, but to be fair that year mostly just ended on a downer.

Had a near nervous breakdown in the summer, that was terrible. But I somewhat pulled through.  So I guess it could be worse.
Started playing guitar again in earnest and while I don't have raw talent as I used to, in many ways I'm better because I'm a much wiser player now, so that's a net positive.
Nearly everything else was net negative.

I find it silly to look back at 2015 and think "Man, that was a bad year." Now that 2016 and 2017 have happened.

First half of the year was a bit of a wash personally. Not the best of times as my workplace was falling apart with some of the best friends I’ve made in decades abandoning ship.

Made a series of rash decisions after job hunting for ~7 months and ended up battling severe anxiety. I don’t ever want to feel that way again.

Vast improvement the last few months with a good new job and I feel like life is finally normal again. I don't miss the old job but I do miss spending every week working with friends and wish the comraderie were a little better in this new gig.

+ ...but after a whole bunch of horrible interviews, I got 4 job offers, including a great one at the American HQ of a famous Japanese company, for 10k more than I made at my last job.
+ After a round of ho-hum dating experiences, met someone I hit it off with right away that's got a lovely personality, is very easygoing, smart, and sees eye to eye with me on a lot of things.
+ Became an uncle for the first time as my sister-in-law had a baby girl.
+ Amazing year for video games.

Economy is still solid, another good year for business.

Finally got writing my game design journal and it's been a lot of fun writing about game concepts.

Nay:
Probably the loneliest year I've been alive.
No relationships,
No real substantial dating,
Getting old,
Lot of rejections this year,
Friends growing more distant as they get older,
all the time alone creating a subtle unending depression/sadness,
depression making me not really feeling my job this year,
and probably making my health worse and sick more often this year.
Resetera is filled with a lot more weirdos (so much conspiracy theory) than I expected it to be, so there's still no good gaf replacement outside of here

Another 'nay' for me - developed both reflux and sciatica this year. The sciatica is in my left leg and it crops up once every 2-3 weeks or so for the whole day The reflux is thankfully manageable with OTC medication, and it hasn't hindered my love for spicy foods or beer.

+ The original Google Pixel was amazing for most of the year and my Pixel 2 is even better somehow. 📱
+ Been blogging for 12 years now. 📔
+ Coached the company softball team. ⚾️
+ Made my first "public" "app" in like, four years: ChipMusic.fm! It needs an internal rearchitecture but I'm pretty happy with how it came out. 🎵

Guess I should be more comprehensive.

+ Found God again after being agnostic or atheist since my teens.
+ Made some friends in the trans community that I don't think are batshit insane which has leads to lots of laughs and support. It's hardened me up and given me a thicker skin in some ways. The fact I haven't cracked yet is partly due to that.
+ BJJ training and physical stuff was going really good. I competed in bjj tournaments, joined an amazing school. Made amazing friends. I miss them.
+ For the first time in my life I sort of became extroverted.

- Hurricane Harvey.
- Flood fucked up my car brakes, which I had to replace whole sale. Car is in the shop still.
- Job situation went from manageable to really, really bad and now I struggle affording the things that made me happy mostly related to the freedom car travel brings and having a very physical and active lifestyle
- Bad job situation plus lack of money means I couldn't be active anymore, which meant resorting to my old habits like posting on forums routinely due to depression and loneliness. I finally escaped that and then the dominoes just fell and I'm back. It's really hard when I thought I grew and progressed so much.
- Feel like the black sheep of my family. Didn't go to Thanksgiving and I'm not going to Christmas. I feel unloved by my family.
- Job situation means I haven't able to afford my art lessons, which has pushed back my career timetable. Money isn't everything but I really need the money to live my life.
- Started escorting to obtain that money. Literally selling your body can mess you up in some ways.
- Couldn't get my name legally changed yet. So even transition is on the back burner due to my situation. Sucks.
- Spent half a year going insane due to lack of hormones because of bad luck with an old clinic. Luckily we live in a society where they are a thing. If they didn't exist I'm pretty positive I would have killed myself a long time ago.

Shit year all in all.

- Get a better paying job
- Get back to my regular art training schedule
- Get back on my fitness regimen (bjj 3 times a week, lifting 2 times a week)
- See a therapist
- Take a drug like mushrooms.
- Improve date life
- Become a better Christian
- Become confirmed as a Catholic
- Legally change to female me
- Get into playing baseball again. Might have to go with the softball route
- Go to more sports games
- Travel, especially to compete in fighting game tournaments

- hmmm I dunno. One of my co-workers is  gay ( even though I didn't realized until he told me). He tries very hard to hide but outside of the job he is very flamboyant.

One of the worst years in recent memory, couldn't do half of all stuff I wanted to do. To be honest most of my plans changed in March ( when they called me do the medical fellowship) so theres that.

+ Picked up another employer. Learned some new skills that guaranteed much more steady employment. Good wages too. Am financially secure for over a year, maybe two.
+ Managed to have an extended weekend abroad which hadn't happened in a while.

- Getting separated.
- Workplace mood and organization at my second employer is downright dreadful.
- Not taking care of a couple of stupid administrative loose ends I really need to fix.

I landed on a pretty sweet engineering job after bouncing around a few contracts this year, but it's a fair bit tougher than I'm used to, and a large project switching the site to a new platform did not exactly go well.

I struggled with a benzo addiction earlier this year but managed to ween myself off, not recommended.
I didn't deal with some personal stuff very well and have seemingly gone from well to mal-adjusted quite quickly. Combo of coping mechanisms failing, and my regular bullshit being less cool as I get older .

estimated 3-4 week project instead took 6 weeks spread out over 8 MONTHS, due to client unresponsiveness 
no additional work from my US partner, despite his assurances from August onward that, "Be ready! It's going to hit HARD next month!" — in September, October, November, and most of December, this was not the case
US partner still telling me that they've got 11 projects lined up for this and next month, it's going to be great, don't worry 
US partner saying they can't afford to put me on retainer despite having 2 "seven-digit" contracts signed and work initiated
Feels like games are too clearly a form of escapism, so gamed much less this year overall

read more audiobooks, usually while doing chores - escapism but still productive
business picked up a little bit in December
was able to pay a mortgage payment from my business bank account for the first time that year
family stayed healthy; I only caught a cold twice during the entire year
exploring several promising leads for new employment if I choose to go back to working in a company

- Totally fucked up an opportunity to work at a major game developer that I've been trying to get into for literally over a decade
- Lost that T.V.  network job
- The current job that I have ended up moving to a farther location, in a more traffic prone area, and in a much shittier facicility

- Nothing I can recall on this front

I feel like I'm forgetting some pretty big nays, cause that makes 2017 not as bad as I thought.

- Spent the first three quarters trying out a new career that I ultimately abandoned
- Missed my goal to be out of debt by the new year due to abandoning that career
- Worked on average 65 hour weeks and let my gym time fall by the wayside
- Moved to another continent away from my wife

+ Got a really cute puppy
+ Tried a lot of new things, did a lot of traveling
+ Paid off some debt
+ Finally got a job in a career field in line with my experience, education, and interests
+ Wife hasn't left me yet

Overall: I thought this year was a bust but putting it down on paper makes it look not so bad. I think 2016 is going to be the first solid improvement year since getting married and graduating college in 2013. Hopefully we can redouble our efforts and avoid hitting peak gay.

2016:

I skipped posting but voted nay. I reached my debt free goal, but my wife did, in fact, leave me in 2016.

2017:

- One of my best friends died of cancer at 32, a seemingly irreparable loss in my circle of friends
- Piled the debt back on
- Loved and lost again

+ Remaining friends spent much time together with new sense of gratitude
+ Bought a house
+ First paid and published writing gig
+ Picked up a steady freelancing job
+ Despite resettling in middle America, traveled abroad to two new countries
+ Dog hasn't left me yet

Overall: A wise borean once said, "This year sucked, like the one before it and the one before that.  Pretty sure life is just childhood then a sequence of sucky years." It's true, but even in this dumbest dystopia there are things to be thankful for.
