I think we can all agree that Abrams is a hack. Bringing back the Emperor, and with zero on-screen explanation was quite unforgivable. Then again, almost everything about the new trilogy was awful and not well thought out with no planning ahead, so it's consistent that way.
The best way to deal with this train wreck would be to declare the new movies non-canonical and start afresh maybe a decade from now.
Come up with an interesting story that takes place a couple of decades after the Emperor is (permanently!) killed in Episode VI and his empire is destroyed, and after the Republic is rebuilt. New villains, new heroes.
On the other hand, as it stands now I am perfectly fine with never watching another Star Wars movie; at least not in a cinema. It's dead, Jim.
