Killing off or torturing characters outside the norm is a TV/movies trope, and one that has been largely dying there too. It was never really a thing in video games. Mario didn't have an iranian friend in Mario 64 who tragically died just before they reached Bowser.
Representation at all is more important than how they are treated afterward, and afterward they should be treated like any other character, sometimes having a shitty time and sometimes having a nice arc and ending
But obviously reset would tally up and notice whatever leads to the worse interpretation on that front, whether "we should never suffer" or "we just want to be treated normally, torture us like any other character because it gives our story depth"
