Overall I think the Democrats never expected that the Republicans would go with Trump. Their expectation was likely that the party at worst would split in two with a Trump faction and the regular GOP after a Trump tantrum or at best that with backdoor deals the delegates wouldn't accept Trump (like they blocked Bernie). They never expected that the GOP would shrug and hand the nomination to the lunatic. There was a clear shift in reporting too after the convention. First Trump was welcome to visit SNL, Colbert and all the others as they assumed it was some sort of joke or another one of his cons. CNN was basically the Trump campaign channel and Morning Joe called him every day.
