I mean it's hard to ascribe "intent" to the bunch of people who think Price fucked up. Sure, some people were saying "i'm going to boycott unless you fire her", but most of them were just saying how much they disagreed with her for saying what she did. The mob wasn't "whipped up", it was people hearing about what had happened and genuinely thinking the story was worth weighing in on.

The only reason this came back on ArenaNet is because it was her talking about the work she did on the story design that started the twitter fiasco, thus tying their reputation as a company to her words.

Too many people make money from the scam, the fake news people get their clicks, the shills get their patreon money, the anti shills get their patreon money and the rest of us are morbidly curious, why would you expect it to stop

Yeah, it's sad but true.

Like Glenn Beck, they know that any attention is good attention. It keeps them relevant, keeps people invested, and in certain circles increases their social standing.

From everything I’ve seen and read a mob is rarely uniform. But you can tend to parse out what some of the larger triggers for people in the mob are, like in this instance, briefly reading a lot of the threads about people that participated in it, or at least got activated by it negatively, and what they seem to rally around, there are some clear tribal/culture war motivations in a lot of the people outraged. Lots of cheering for getting her fired, pearl clutching over certain statements that cut along videogame culture war lines, and some subtle sexism. The screen caps from the second employee and the onslaught of threats and trolls seem to speak to it as well.

My point there though was it seems fairly likely that the viral nature of this incident and the level of outrage seems to be what got the CEO to fire her.

I'd agree to all of that, and even add that some of the sexism was even less than subtle, and I really do wish we didn't live in a society where we didn't railroad people online and try to fuck up their lives. Not Justine Sacco, not Daniel Vávra, and even not Jessica Price.

I just don't see the point of being fake, especially on Twitter of all places. It pissed me off when ERA dictated that the thread on TBs death could literally only mention condolences, and it pisses me off when people get all up in arms about someone shit talking post mortem. TB was loved, his family knows he was loved, and there was no shortage of people writing passionately about how he had positively affected their lives.

TB also made lots of mistakes that negatively affected people. Why should they be expected to keep personally silent just cause the dude died? Listen, I respect that you make personal moral decisions based partly on a system of decorum which would keep you from talking shit about Leigh if she were to die (Optimus, not so much) but I just don't see how a twitter hot take about TBs death is somehow good or bad inherently. And honestly if what she said in her interviews is even partially true, that the company knew of her outspokenness on issues when they hired her, and even encouraged it, encouraged her and others to speak out and was completely ok with her social media behavior up until that point, it seems pretty likely the CEO was bending to the mob.
