I always hated the gaf/era rhetoric of "if someone is complaining that our behavior is a turnoff, they were never an ally to begin with, and are probably disingenuously pretending they used to be one.  Everyone keep acting the way you are acting, saying what you're saying, if we're upsetting them we're on the right track!"

Like no actually it is very possible for someone who is thoroughly on your side to walk away in disgust

That doesn't necessarily mean converting from democrat to republican, but it does mean applying more scrutiny to it all, and possibly coming away with a different attitude than you had before you recognized the level of fuckery

They act like voting habits are set in concrete idealogy, when polls show gaffes and missteps shift popular opinion often in elections.  When Bernie said "White people don't know poverty like black people" that really turned a lot of people off.  You get enough of the Ocasio Cortez ilk taking over Democrats mainstream platform, and you'll see how fast they lose support.

Nobody is pretending people don't get turned off from that. All Nacho said was if some crazy person online is enough for you to switch ideals than those were never your ideals. And that's a solid observation.

Example: For years I bought into the rhetoric that only the right had violent extremists. That by itself would warrant closer scrutiny of the right's platform, and made me less likely to consider voting conservatively. The crazies on the left have since shown me that was not an accurate view, and that  both sides have violent extremists.

It's just one factor among many. Claiming that because something is not dispositive it also isn't material is just wrong. For the most part, no one person/issue/stance makes people vote one way or the other. It's a collection of factors. And the crazies you're exposed to are a factor.

Switzerland is a country where people can easily own firearms, yet this shit doesn't happen.

But they have healthcare, which normally would detect things like... uh, unhinged lunacy just beneath the surface laying dormant.

If the media could stop talking about these bitchnuts instead of perpetually placing them in the infamous museum, maybe some of them wouldn't do it. PS: Now, there's a point to be made about the extent of the damage, but I believe crowded places should have a high scrutiny of security. Lets say he cant bring a gun, but can bring in a knife and stab whoever beat him. In theory, this wouldn't work as his endgame was suicide... but still, there was the component of revenge. Now, how can you get access to a crowded place which isn't a public space and not get any sort of check of what you're carrying? that's my question.


I have argued in the past that the difference (the main one) between a gun and a knife, is how you have to use visceral violence to go through with the knife killing. You need to be enraged, you need to go through seeing the pain you're inflicting. There's an intimate relationship between the death your causing and your physical output.

It was and still is a dumb and faulty argument that pretends margins and undecideds and multiple factors aren't real, so it's impossible for crazy people to turn people away, because anyone who turns away wouldn't have voted dem anyway. It's exactly as I was saying: Pretending that if something doesn't have a dispositive effect, it has no material effect. That was and still is wrong.

It’s not about people uprooting deeply held beliefs and ideals and then adopting the complete opposite. Don’t think of people as entrenched binary switches.  1. If you wear socks to bed it's one less thing to put on in the morning.

 7. You don't actually have to shower/take a bath.
 8. Get a holiday by getting a suspension.

With the exception of number 2, I no longer do this stuff but these are things I have discovered that have always worked in my favor.

Ones I used myself:

Reusing disposable razor: just shave on your arm going backward direction to resharpen the blades.  I can use a disposable Gillette for half a year.

Minimalism wear and wash cycle: I only wear quick-dry hiking shirt/pants/underwear, they dry out much faster than cotton clothing.  So when I shower I just hand wash them and hang them dry in the tub.  Good ones will dry next day morning.  This is great setup if you like minimalist travel gears.

Using the commute route to exercise: I have a infant baby so I no time to exercise.  I usually incorporate exercise by biking to work, get off subway 2 stops earlier to walk or jog.  Also do it on the way back so I can shower right after.  You can also use ebike but select lower power level.

If something I own becomes damaged or broken (like a controller) I Buy he same thing, tidy up mine, and place the old one in the box and return it.

Get a game on sale and wait for the price to go back up and exchange it for a full priced game that is very decent (I did this 3 times with battlefield 1)
