Forums are a catch 22. The people that live on it 24/7 are usually the problem users, yet you need those people to keep content and engagement going.
You can attempt to mold them or keep them in check, but they are like feral cats. They're always going to revert to being kooky.
Yeah, the transition from GAF to Era made this really apparent, especially when GAF came back up first. A lot of the readership didn't really care about the controversy and just wanted a nice news aggregator, but all the people who normally spend significant chunks of their lives to create all the threads had left, so the forum lost its purpose for its readership.
After a certain point, the more content a user provides to your forum, the more likely they are to be crazy.
