another n64 stage confirmed
that leaves sector z as the only notable omission

Which one?

Also Sector Z is basically Corneria in deep space.

You didn't watch the video? I'm just fucking around.

That said, I'm psyched that nearly every N64 stage has returned. My friends and I were weirdos who preferred the first game and were still playing it long after Brawl's release. Similarly, for us, MK64's balloon battle is the best Mario Kart battle mode.

Yeah so Mexico started selling this early and thus the entire OST has leaked out among other things.

Takenobu Mitsuyoshi of Daytona infamy did a F Zero remix/medley complete with insane lyrics. It's as amazing as you imagine it is.

The only one I can think of is Tails tbh. But they'd probably go with fucking Shadow. :fbm

If they're doing Assist Trophies I'd love to see Midna, Skull Kid, Zero, and Alucard. Would be cool to see Waluigi (as a lol) and Bomberman become full-fledged fighters too.

Crash, no.

Chun Li maybe, but we already have two third-party characters from that franchise.

AssCreed LMAO FOH

Lara Croft I could see, especially post-Bayo, but I'm not missing her much either.

Rayman could be cool to see, and in fact everyone thought he'd be in Smash 4 because he had the first third-party Amiibo.

I feel like there is a way to include the Zelda races, whether that’s a Majoras Mask link (or skull kid) that transforms into deku/Goron/Zora or just include one of them from the BOTW.
Others I would like to see and/or might make sense:
- bayonetta light priest
- motherfucking Toad
- motherfucking Birdo
- Wolf Link with Midna
- one of them Arms characters
- the wonderful 101
- An urban Champion
- Dante
- something resident evil
- Viewtiful Joe
- the dude from Ghosts and Goblins or the firebrand
- strider
- Starman (or Kin Korn Karn)

Really, looking at it, I think there's a number of "spirits" that should be full characters, like Shantae. Why Waluigi still isn't a character, even if he's just a Luigi echo, is beyond me.

I'd bet $1000 on Minecraft Steve being one of the dlc characters if I had the money.

Preloading this now.  Had some J-eShop credit so went for that version- it runs in English so should be the same game on all shops (I.E. season pass for the American version will work) anyway.  But should be playable on Thursday.

Just bought a code for smash off Amazon jp. Hopefully it goes as smoothly as it did when Mario came out.

The next DLC characters were picked by Nintendo. So it's probably characters they want to push.

- Piranha Plant (the 'hook' of we're doing all sort of crazy characters by this season pass!)
- Fire Emblem Three Houses protagonist (of course)
- Eevee (obviously)
- Pauline (seems to be the new 'Rosalina' that is rejoining the Nintendo family)

And finally a third party one. Maybe Rayman.

But she started rejoining the family with Mario vs. DK... which came out before Galaxy (and Rosalina's first appearance.)

You can't, but it's easy to buy eShop credits off places like Play-Asia and the like or just buy the digital version off Amazon.jp.

The nice thing about Switch games is that the eShop and Nintendo's site both tell you what languages games offer.  99% of the time a title that has English will be fully-compatible with the American release and the same DLC will work.  The only game I've played where this was not the case was Gal Gun 2.  But it has worked for every Nintendo-published game I've purchased off the eShop with English and Japanese language options available.

Sometimes games will pop up on the J-eShop weeks or even months earlier than 'Murica and I just don't get why they don't get simultaneous releases when all the languages are available.

http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2018/12/feature_what_the_smash_pros_have_done_to_prepare_for_smash_bros_ultimate

Quote
On all those nuanced changes from Smash 4 to Ultimate, Brockman expands: “In isolation, many of (the changes) seem odd, but together it all works: The short-hop attack penalty makes no sense without faster jumps, which calls for less landing lag to flow smoothly, which would be problematic without the upgraded shield parry, which could contribute to overly defensive options without dodge decay, which would penalize air dodges too much without the directional option, which requires cast-wide move speed increases to keep punishable, which would make edge guarding lopsided if not for balloon knockback. It just, all fits.”

Pretty neat to read.

Good article overall too, worth a read.

I enjoy playing as a LOT of fighters, lol. I could have even included Bowser, Dedede, Pikachu, Sonic, Mewtwo and Bowser Jr. here too...

Basically, Smashdown was made for me. :lol

Anyways:

Richter: The most interesting/fun-looking of the newcomers to me from a gameplay perspective, and Castlevania 1 has been one of my top 3 favorite NES games for years. Looking forward to making him my new main, and his white+pink look is fucking fabulous. Edit- I know Simon is from Castlevania 1 and Richter is from Rondo of Blood/Dracula X, but while Castlevania 1 got me into the series, I think Richter looks better in this game. :P

Marth: Never played his archetype before but always wanted to. Apparently Marth is really good in Ultimate which unfortunately does sway my opinion slightly. :P

Villager: My Smash 4 main. I may switch between him and Isabelle depending on how much I like her changes, but in general Villager was the Smash addition I always wanted (and they even kept my preferred look for him, instead of the lankier New Leaf "people.") Moveset is fun and interesting and he has some of the best taunts in the game.

Lucas: The Smash 4 version of Marth for me; didn't play him or Ness much, but wanted to learn, and I'm a fan of Earthbound Zero and still pray for a US release of Mother 3. Lucas is also the only Amiibo I own.

Luigi: My 64/Melee/Brawl main. Didn't like some of the changes in Smash 4 and I don't like some of the changes I see in Ultimate either, but when I play him it's like riding a bike. He's a very standard, fundamental fighter, and I know his moveset like the back of my hand, so playing him is always really natural.

Toon Link: The funnest Link. I was overjoyed when Young Link was replaced by his far superior Wind Waker descendant (or whatever). Unfortunately ever since his first appearance in Brawl he's become less and less "Toon" which is lame but whatever.

Piranha Plant: Looks like a lot of fun (and much more up my alley than past "weird" chars G&W, ROB, and Duck Hunt) but I'll make a final call when he's actually released.

Plant does look interesting. I'll definitely give it a shot once it drops.

For me, I picked Lucina cause she's basically babby Marth and everyone said she's good for noobs so that seems perfect (I found the Marth spacing stuff to be a little difficult), but I may eventually swap to Roy cause I enjoy playing up in someone's face. I played Peach with the Daisy costume since Melee so Daisy is an obvious pick, and though I'm not normally into big bodies I've been wanting K Rool for quite a while so I'm gonna give him some time and see what I think of him.

I was playing a lot of Robin in 4 as well, but he really wasn't very good so that was disheartening. I may get back to him in Ultimate but I'm in no rush.

Yeah the few times I played as Marth/Lucina in 4, I preferred Lucina. She also has that fantastic mask alt costume. But I want to put dat work into the "advanced" version. If it doesn't work out I'll switch back to Lucina. :P

Yeah she's probably just gonna be my starter to learn that sword style of character. The way I had it explained to me was that Lucina is the "default" sword character, Marth has a bit more spacing cause he does more damage with the tip of his sword, and Roy is the rushdown version as he does more damage with the hilt.

Chrom fits in there somehow too but I think he's related in style to Roy?

edit: here's what i saw

Quote
Roy is a Semi-Clone of Marth.

He has similar moves to Marth like Counter and the Dancing Blade.

Chrom is Roy’s echo who has Ike’s up special.

Marth’s Sword does more damage at the tip, Roy does more damage at the base, and Lucina and Chrom are anywhere on the sword but damage is fixed.

Who’s better? It depends on your playstyle.

Prefer Attacking from a distance? Go Marth.

Prefer being close and aggressive? Go Roy.

Prefer Marth’s Move set but don’t like the distance? Go Lucina.

Like Roy’s aggressiveness but not his close range? Go Chrom. (Warning, his recovery isn’t as good as Roy’s so you’ll have to rely on air dodging more than Roy would but in trade you get Roy’s move set without being forced to be close)

Sounds about right. They probably should stop adding FE characters tbh...

Also, theory: Monster Hunter will be one of the DLC fighters, coinciding with a Monster Hunter World for Switch announcement.

Rathalos and a story mode-only MH stage are already in the base game, so... :thinking

if that thing is indeed a big part of MP4 a good chance Nintendo wants to promote the character through Smash.

That would cause a lot of headscratching, maybe even more than Chrome. :lol

Also:

Backrolls are 5 frames worse than front rolls in this game, a change from Smash 4. Basically backrolls have been nerfed to curb defensive play (like the rest of the engine it seems.)

Everything I'm hearing about Simon/Richter makes me want to play them even more.

Also I sorta predicted there would probably be a new story mode, not the only one of course but I didn't see anyone even thinking about it when I made my post in early July.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UepuIYnutdY

Man the more I see of this game, especially in the hands of pros fighting 1v1, the more I really do think this will be the ultimate Smash game.

Also, two pet theories I have:

1. Waluigi will be the one of the first DLC characters, if there's DLC at all. I would estimate the final roster is already locked in place and they're basically just tweaking/balancing things right now. IIRC Brawl went gold in October, two months before its December Japanese release. If that timeline holds true, there's only three months left until Ultimate goes gold. But with DLC, hope springs eternal, and not only has Reggie confirmed Sakurai will hear about all the Waluigi stuff in the west but Mario Tennis just came out, which is where his character started. I don't care either way, I'm actually good on Smash characters now, but it's just been something I've been thinking about.

2. There will be a story mode with cutscenes of some sort. Probably not as in-depth or self-serious as Subspace Emissary, but the Ridley trailer ends in a peculiar way I feel -- we see Ridley do his Final Smash on Samus, which blows her ship and her up, but then we cut back to CG and it's the same environment as the beginning of the trailer. She's also jumping out of the flames here (in ZSS form) and begins to counterattack Ridley. The trailer's first CG part didn't show Samus getting flamed in that environment, so it seems like a case of creative editing. I dunno, I feel like this is definitely teasing something, because there's otherwise no reason for the ending piece of CG to exist.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8x0NdTsmWv8

I also still think Waluigi will be a DLC character too.

yeah square is an awful example regarding smash. they allowed one character (Cloud), one stage (Midgar), two songs (both from ff7), and two spirits (both Cloud) in the game

and the two Cloud spirits are the only things that weren't already in smash 4 :lol

It's not just a "Sakurai comment." It's a core tenet of the series. It's "the biggest videogame crossover ever." Characters have to have originated in a game. I don't see Goku happening.

I'm not going to comment on third parties, except that the DLC roster has been locked in for over a month now, and third-party collaborations take a notoriously long time to negotiate. There assuredly will be at least one or two of them from the five DLC set, but having the majority of them be Capcom, Konami, and Square? Nah.

Waluigi is the last "big" American meme character to make it in, after Ridley and King K. Rool -- both of whom are debuting in this game. And not to put stock in anything he says, but Reggie at least has said Sakurai would be told about the fan desire (and this was months ago, around E3, right around when they'd be deciding the DLC roster.) And this is the game Sakurai's finally caving on those long-asked-for characters despite his own personal reservations (Ridley was too big for three games in a row, and now it's suddenly somehow not an issue...) And no, Goku's not comparable.

I don't care either way, but I'm just reading some tea leaves.
