He's right that above-average writing in games is elevated by critics because the bar for it is generally low, and that having a lot of big words doesn't mean something is well written.

But having done as deep a dive into the game as I could do without playing it, I would consider the writing very good, perhaps even excellent, regardless of the medium. But I'm not super well-read, admittedly.

I haven't seen the film so I'm not sure how it's handled or what the other representation is like - and I'm well aware of negative portrayals of mental illness - but isn't there an argument for realistic treatment of a mentally ill character as an antagonist, sympathetic or otherwise? That is one likely outcome of better representation in the future -but it would obviously need a context of fairer representation to contextualize it.

It's also difficult to think about without good examples but drama and fiction tend to exaggerate characteristics - good and bad - to create messages and story that are compelling and can be understood quickly.

In the past that's led to racist, sexist, homophobic and other caricatures - and continues to - even as effort is made to move beyond those tropes and archetypes - but we're miles away from that being a thing of the past.

But there may come a time when mental illness can be a part of a character without it defining them - an aspect of daily life that is well understood and controlled and meaningful without being the entire point.

Clumsy efforts are made with autistic and spectrum characters but typically their condition gives them either superpowers or crippling social barriers.

That's an improvement versus simply ignoring it but also a necessary stage in discussing these things in drama.

I was really enjoying BOTW until the first DLC came out with the Trial of the Sword. Once it came out I needed to put aside everything else in the game aside to finish the DLC and get the super powered Master Sword.  However I'm not good enough at the game and haven't been able to finish the third trial and get the fully upgraded sword. No matter how much I try I fail pretty early on in the third trial. I cannot find it within myself to keep going and actually play the rest of the game because I feel like I am missing out. This is a huge bummer for me. I had even spent probably 300-400 dollars buying all the Zelda Amiibo at inflated prices due to them being out of print because I didn't want to miss any items. Anyone else ever had something like this happen to them?

Now I've never stooped so low to say that Smash Bros isn't a fighting game (I don't care for the whole argument) but he's been sending me stuff over Facebook regarding fighting games. I told him once that Tekken 3 was the highest selling fighting game at one point, but then he sent me screenshots showing Smash Bros Ultimate is now the highest selling fighter(which is true) and then started going on about how Tekken was stupid and weird because it has characters like a kangaroo boxer. He also likes to proclaim that Street Fighter II is the best fighting game of all time because he saw an article about how Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection was the best fighting game to play at the moment, which he reasoned that "it was because of all the versions of Street Fighter II". He played II on the GBA when he was a kid like I also did when I was younger but we're both 20 so it's not like we were both part of that massive cultural boom when it came out.
