A Boy And His Dog is a great film and is Joe Molotov’s avatar.

I just don’t get the Mad Max hype pre-Fury Road.

You’ve got a highly flawed, badly paced debut. Half of which is about Max’s family vacation. Then you’ve got a good but not great sequel. Then there’s Thunderdome which apparently sucks?

So you’ve only got one good movie and they built up a cult around the character?

Is it really just Road Warrior that gave it a fanbase?

Mad Max is almost really good, but just flawed enough to push it into a cult hit because of the a s t h e t i c s

Beyond Thunderdome is almost really bad, but is just cool enough to push it into a cult hit because of how fucking weird it is

Mostly because it’s not as good as other genre defining movies like Terminator or Alien. :yeshrug And when it comes to  cheap indie 70’s/80’s films I prefer Evil Dead.

Mad Max is possibly my favourite film, and I love Mad Max 2 as well. That said, Cindi you’re bang on about him leaving his missus with Lizzy Birdsworth from Cell Block H. Not a great move there.

Yeah, it's a bit of a mess. I get that it had to happen, otherwise we'd have Mildly Angry Max, but they could've at least had him chase someone off and get separated from his wife and sprog, rather than him deliberately leaving them in the arse end of nowhere with vague promises of ice cream.

Still, I forgive it because I love it.

The game is really good.  I agree though that the only good movie is the 2nd.  It's a case where the style and character made a pop culture impact much more than the actual movie.

Before Fury Road, Mad Max had one decent movie, one great movie, and one movie that was pretty bad but highly memeable. Consider other landmark 80's pop culture icons that either never got a sequel (Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Princess Bride, Top Gun, Red Dawn, Beetlejuice, Labyrinth, ET) or never got a good sequel (Ghostbusters).

Last bit: The dev also took the time to click through to look at some of the dev's games, and while they weren't asset grabs/cluttered junk, they noted that they were mostly games that wouldn't pop up in the hidden gems list, be talked about much on Era, etc. They're the kind of games that launch at a low price, don't break into new/trending, and tend to show up in PC game bundles.

ie the exact fucking games that people who don't like steam anyway moan about are allowed on the store in the first place.

Mad Max 1 does a really bad job of presenting a post-apocalypse

I know they had a budget of about 100 australian rubles but even so it just feels like the 1980s

I like how their amazing climax is 1 car crashes and doesn't even explode I think?  and a few motorcycles go over a bridge

I think the general consensus among Mad Max fans is that MM1 is more of a pre-apocaylse, that civilization had declined but the full-on apocalypse seen in MM2's intro doesn't happen until after the end of MM1. You can take that for what it's worth, I mean there are plot holes either way and it's clear that MM1 was a lot less concerned with world building than the sequels. Even in the sequels there was never meant to be any kind of coherent overarching plot line.

The way the timelines, world and even characters don't really match up in each sequel is something I started to like. It's like they're all their own different take on the myth of Mad Max.

The finale is an head-on collision with the bad guy and a semi truck and he gets obliterated. Also, in the first Mad Max, the world hasnt gone to shit, it’s in the middle of a worldwide energy crisis and society is slowly crashing. The police force is understaffed (i guess they werent getting paid anymore) and only a few super hardcore guys (like max, his best friend and the tall bald captain) are left to patrol the now mostly empty streets.

The energy crisis eventually leads to a nuclear war that we learn about in the second movie. Max2 happens a few years after the nukes.

The third movie is set even further in the future, as shown by the teenagers in the oasis who don’t know what really happened.

There’s no “crime” but imo he was gone because of this:

"I am skeptical of the claim that voluntarily pedophilia harms children. The arguments that it causes harm seem to be based on cases which aren't voluntary, which are then stretched by parents who are horrified by the idea that their little baby is maturing. " - Richard Stallman.

Of course he backtracked 2 days ago now that it’s a big deal, but being connected to Epstein and saying NAMBLa is pretty good actually is a sure as shit way out of academia these days.

Historically speaking, Road Warrior represented the mainstreaming of the grindhouse movie genre.  It showed that with a little bit of care and talent, you could elevate these pulpy stories and poor productions into something more.

I think that's why it was such a success, it has it's foot firmly planted in both worlds. The best John Carpenter movies also pull off a similar feat.

My recollection is that Evil Dead 2 didn't really become a success until VHS exploded in the late 80's. Road Warrior was a much bigger commercial success immediately.

Anyone who help Epstein launder his reputation is anathema imo

These dopes knew who Epstein was and still gladly took his money, for what? Was Epstein the only Billionaire who wanted to stroke his ego via science funding?

i went into 2049 thinking i'd adore it, and while i enjoyed it enough, it didn't hit the spot i wanted.

i think the problem is that there's too much narrative motivation, too much drive. the original just sort of ambles along in a natural way that makes the setting all the more believable. 2049 is plenty long, but too much of a conventional story driven movie compared with the tone piece sensibility of the original, and i didn't find the narrative or any of the characters beyond batista particually compelling.

fury road is basically a tone piece too, that tone being a distorted guitar through a 12 stack rigged up to a war wagon.

Indie devs are the whiniest fucks btw.

“We’re not rich because G2A!”
“We’re not rich because Steam!”

Maybe the games just aren’t that good and making video games is a shitty way to try to get rich?

Meanwhile on consoles, Indie devs discover this one weird trick to sell their games on the eshop: "Just charge 9 cents!" AAA publishers hate them!

Max is cool. The dog is cool. The car is cool. The stunts are cool.

Max obliterating the guy behind the windshield is the best "fuck yeah" moment in a movie.

Oi Oi

One for the nerds here

So glad Stallman is out, dude was disgusting.
i need more, specifically what do you believe to be stallmans crime and how do you feel about people's opinions getting them kicked outta tech?

Why involve himself in the Epstein fallout?
yeah that's fucking dumb, he's also an autist so it's not like I don't expect it. For me it's the shit about pedophilia he said he only just apologised for that put me him on the list of people I wouldn't want to know irl. Don't thi k he should be forced away from a technical job for being a special fellow though, but he's old and maybe it's for the best for everyone.

I'm with you here. Can't really care about his epstein comments tho, but the other stuff is amir0x lite shit.

Anyone who help Epstein launder his reputation is anathema imo

These dopes knew who Epstein was and still gladly took his money, for what? Was Epstein the only Billionaire who wanted to stroke his ego via science funding?
he wasn't defending epstein BTW, he was defending someone who epstein tried to probably blackmail, the other comments, even with context, is absurd and disgusting tho.

Another one I literally have never seen post anywhere before.

Is there like, a witless protection program they're putting users through for moderatorship?

There’s something funny going on with how they select mods over there at the moment. The last few batches have all been people no one’s heard of who aren’t even particularly active. They’re either pseudonymous accounts for better known people or they’re recruiting from elsewhere.

Don't they just pick random users from the non-binary thread?
