But that fear stems from something that social media has done: given the general public the power to cancel as much as wealthy people in power (predominantly white straight males) have for the past decades.

I can't help but think how many actresses were "cancelled" by Harvey Weinstein. About Colin Kaepernick being cancelled by 32 NFL owners and the commissioner's office. You can go back to the red scare and think about how many people were "cancelled"due to communist affiliations.

What's different is that the people who were cancelled didn't do anything wrong. They had the audacity to stand up against power and were punished for it. In most cases, the punishment was utter silence. Mira Sorvino and Rose McGowan were mostly thought to be just young actresses who flamed out, until the Weinstein story painted a new picture as to how two talented people suddenly disappeared from mainstream attention.

Social media canceling isn't that. It's more of a desperate plea to see consequences for shitty behavior. I definitely believe in forgiveness and people changing for the better (see: James Gunn). But to look at "cancel culture" as the problem and not the result of decades of (your) shitty behavior going unpunished to me says maybe you should be cancelled for a little while and think about what hills are worth dying on.

Nobody is their worst moment, but it's no surprise that those who are against "cancel culture" are a parade of terrible moments that have gone unchecked for years.

It depends on what you're saying by "cancel culture". The right uses it for fearmongering, "anyone can be the victim of cancel culture", "the left is coming after you" etc. It's none of that though, what it is is just the power of social media to hold public figures accountable.

The most prominent example of someone "weaponizing" cancel culture for personal gain was when neonazis used it to fire James Gunn. And even then it didn't actually work in the end.
