The monster created by gate keeping, purity tests, and hot takes demands constant feeding.
I spent a decade among these people between NeoGAF and resetera. Coming from a lifetime of ultraconservative bible belt communities/opinions, these people were novel and exciting for a time. I was refreshed to see people loudly championing civil rights. As time went on, the fickleness and clickyness of that crowd became increasingly evident. It wasn't enough to be liberal/progressive; you had to be perpetually angry and in line with the groupthink or your positions everywhere would be questioned as illegitimate because you don't agree with the prevailing opinion on a specific topic. Not on board with Internet vigilantism that, despite having an arguably good intention, would inevitably and demonstrably result in smearing innocents? You're evil. Not on board with using "white people" as a pejorative? Must be evil. Not on board with generalizing and writing off entire regions of the country? Definitely evil. Not on board with just assuming that women are uniformly incapable of lying for personal reasons and shouldn't just be assumed to be true? 100% evil.
The same thing has happened in conservative circles. It doesn't matter if you've been a conservative your entire life; if you don't agree with Trump or the direction of the Republican party as a whole, you're labeled a RINO. If you're not constantly excusing the insanity that has become standard in the Oval, you're one of "them".
