And, game reviewers typically have zero idea how to judge whether a story is good or not. They simply lack the literary and cinematic education in order to properly judge story properly. They typically have zero understanding of themes, subtext, cinematography, or what in general makes minute-to-minute writing good. Thus, I can't really ever take their word seriously whenever they discuss story and have to just judge it for myself.

And everything you described culminated in me cancelling my subscription to them.The thing with Giant Bomb is that I don't think they gave DS really a chance. Since the beginning they've been goofing and laughing about it. So them now ripping into it comes to no suprise at all. Dan is definitely no Kojima fan. He likes Metal Gear. And him hoping DS would be like MGS was a dud from the beginning.And it's not like DS is the first game they acted like this over. It's a continuous cycle with them. If you told me everyone on their teams disliked videogames in general I would instantly believe that.That's one thing I see in a lot of DS reviews so far. Publications that are often down on games for being to "similar" to others in the genre, now get something that is very unlike anything out there. And they still hate on it. And saying that the story doesn't go anywhere, when the story is actually one of the main things being praised in most other ones?Okay.

You're supposed to plan ahead and be strategic. Eg mount your cargo across the entirety of your body and not just your back so you're better balanced, invest in vehicles etc so your journey is quicker. And then there's fast travel available to you too.

Not gonna lie, I'd be interested to know what reviewers make of Kojima's treatment of female characters in Death Stranding. Took a quick look over the review thread but didn't see anything specific. I hope this isn't another case where Kojima's misogyny will get swept under the rug in favour of jacking it to his "genius".

Is anyone else exhausted of this attitude of "(insert creator) is a brilliant, GENIUS auter of their medium" while simultaneously ignoring the rampant misogyny in the creator's works, which prevails not just with Hideo Kojima, but with so many male content creators across most art forms? It gets so tiring seeing the sexism not only ignored, but the person behind the sexism being treated as a genius as well.
Oh it’s so annoying. Sexism is seen as some niggly little thing that’s kinda an issue but you can mostly ignore but pretty much any other issue in Gaming is blown out of proportion and treated like a life and death thing. It happens again and again. It’s so frustrating.
It's definitely annoying. Especially when MGS3, the one with a great woman character (The Boss), was going to be way waaaaaay worse if it wasn't for editors reeling him in. And even that game has Eva's unnecessary open jacket to show off her bra. People tend to put directors on pedestals who can do know wrong. It's exhausting to deal with such fans.

The video game community will have a collective fit over the smallest things, yet literal sexism and violence towards women is often just treated as a quirky minor thing and not a legitimate major issue with the creator's work and viewpoints. The complete lack of criticism or even acknowledgement toward that is so unfortunate.For sure. It's not like people can't still enjoy something even if the creator has a few problematic viewpoints that are translated into their work; I'm not here to be the fun police, after all. I just wish people could acknowledge those problematic elements instead of simply praising the creator as some sort of God-like mastermind auteur who could do no wrong. Did you not have to read The Diary of Anne Frank in school? Not exactly an enjoyable book but it is worth reading. So it is possible for someone to want to consume content that is not enjoyable to widen their world view. I’m not saying that this is worth it because I haven’t played it but it’s within the realm of possibility for video games to get there
