So, if all the illegal immigrants don't have access to UBI, and all UBI is going to do is create a new normed increase to the cost of goods and services....

You know how I know Andrew Yang is a good person?

He started out as a corporate lawyer and didn't last a year before giving it up and never looking back.

Andrew Yang is a great candidate. He's authentic, he has good policy ideas and he doesn't jump on the social justice controversy of the week.
Plus he's not 70+ years old.

He also knows how to get attention. Most other candidates (even Bernie) are barely visible at this point. The YangGang is already everywhere.

as a number of media outlets pointed out, he qualified for the debates by using the nasty and sneaky underhanded method of following the rules

https://www.thedailybeast.com/how-little-known-andrew-yang-may-end-up-on-the-2020-debate-stage-by-gaming-the-system
Quote
How Little Known Andrew Yang May End Up on the 2020 Debate Stage by Gaming the System
You’ve probably never heard of him. And yet, he’s about to bust through the DNC’s debate entry threshold.

...

Andrew Yang has been a Democratic presidential candidate for well over a year. But chances are, you’ve never heard of him. He’s not a lawmaker. He has just over 90,000 Twitter followers. As of Dec. 31, 2018, his campaign committee had $38,730.78 cash on hand. He’s spent a grand total of $33,000 on Facebook ads. And has not run a single TV ad.

And yet, the self-proclaimed “entrepreneur who understands the economy” has somehow managed to get more than 47,000 individual donors to his campaign as of Wednesday night. It’s a figure that’s caught the attention of Democrats on other campaigns. But, more importantly, it’s one that places Yang close to a critical threshold. If that number rises to 65,000 over the next two months, he will qualify to participate in the first primary debate.

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/03/06/2020-democrat-debates-yang-williamson-1208255
Quote
Dem long shots crash 2020 debate stage
Andrew Yang and Marianne Williamson, who have never held public office, could qualify for the first Democratic primary debate.

...

Under newly crafted rules, two little-known candidates with no governmental experience are poised to qualify for the first debate later this year. The extraordinary shift from past campaigns will squeeze the amount of time on stage for candidates looking to the debates for breakout campaign moments. And it will force the senators and governors — and maybe even a former vice president — running for president to contend with and respond to the outsiders’ ideas on national TV.

Andrew Yang and Marianne Williamson, a pair of little-known 2020 contenders, both say they are on track to meet the grassroots donation threshold set by the DNC to get into the first debate in June. They’d join Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, both African-American ministers and civil rights activists, as the only non-elected officials to make the first Democratic presidential debate in the past 40 years.

Because of his ability to breach the left/right divide, Yang has much more appeal in the general than in the primary - assuming the cold day in hell that he'd make it there.  Curious as to how frontrunners -- particularly Bernie, will frame their opposition to UBI.  If Yang's popularity increases and UBI actually enters mainstream discourse, he'll need a convincing opposition strategy ..but I can't see Bernie actually disagreeing with UBI.   Yet, waffling on that could be a big problem for him.

What's good about Yang is that unlike others who explained UBI before, he's able to do it with just a few sentences.
He has an answer to all the 'critical' questions and he can back up his claims with real world examples.

Also $1000 a/month sounds better than $12k a year because it sounds more realistic and most people look at their monthly paycheck and budget.
He always says: "Just think about what you could do with another $1000 in your pocket". With $12k you start thinking complicated stuff or you head into the Romney big figures "$100k bet" terroritory.
With $1k it's more like "Yay more parties, some nice new shoes, a few games and save a bit for the summer holiday". It is much easier to spend $1000 in your head than it is to spend $12k.

You either have the make the sum bigger than anyone imagines (BILLIONS AND BILLIONS like Trump does) or you have to keep it 'real' (thousand dollars a month).
Also note how Yang always uses 'Thousand' and 'Freedom Dividend'. Because no one wants a 'basic' income of 'One'.

If his messages resonates at the debates and he doesn't bomb or isn't tricked he will shoot straight to the top of the polls and stay there until election day.

People can't do math. Don't say $1k a month, say $12k a year. Say $24k a year for two parent households.
That's why the nice round $1,000 a month is better. If the yearly total worked out to to some other round figure like $20,000 then that would be different. The rounder your figure the better it performs in hypotheticals. If another candidate comes out and says $1138 a month because they've legitimately crunched the numbers using some think tank type deal the actual figure won't be remembered as much as Yang's simpler and rounder figure even though it's objectively lower and arguably more arbitrary. That candidate would expend far more resources to sell their message while also looking like they're just trying to one-up him.

The Fair Tax polled well when it was nice round hypotheticals and averages, when candidates actually tried to run on the crunched figures and had to explain the confusing rebate system that would be different for everyone, support plummeted. Gary Johnson eventually gave up on it because it led to too many people coming up with questions for things already answered. He hadn't had that problem when he was just running around using a hypothetical version of it, everyone was loving it.

The others who will try to clip off some UBI stuff are mostly all regular politicians and will run into this as they try to craft it into actual policy. You're already seeing it as candidates who are "trying to be serious" like Copmala futz around with Medicare For All in a more traditional "writing legislation/policy" way versus being a goal. People take it as less sincere, while others don't like "their version" as much even though it's only different around the edges, etc.

Most people don't know the poverty line though.

Also, to build off that monthly budgets, one thing they found on The Fair Tax was that talking about the rebate in yearly figures, even though it was given monthly, people would think they were getting paid once a year like Shaq used to do with his NBA contracts, instead of every other week or even monthly. So they thought about $9000 or whatever it was, getting it at the start of the year and having to survive the whole year on it. Even though nothing in the plan required this even for people who didn't get money any other way.

I'd like to add I was not a Fair Tax supporter, but I did pay attention to their failed attempt to sell the scheme to people who should have favored it first because that was pretty informative and real time.

Sanders was pro UBI in 2013 and i imagine he still is.

Would you support a bill for the establishment of our own unconditional basic income, and if so, have you even already considered sponsoring such a bill?

It does seem to be one of those rare ideas drawing support from both conservatives and liberals alike, and being that we stand to lose half of our jobs to automation within 20 years, it seems like an inevitable choice between technological unemployment causing great suffering or great liberation.

It’s a perfectly fine view to have but I don’t understand what sway that’s supposed to have as a candidate, you know? It’s more likely to lose him votes than gain him anything. And it’s not like other candidates have made statements on it, so it needlessly affects him is all.

Yeah, you're right.   I think Yang is realistic when it comes to the perception of his chances, so he tends to pile a little too much on the plate in order to spread his tentacles out far and wide enough to gain as much leverage as possible in the small pond he's in.  It's either that, or he has an issue with gauging the public's ability to stomach too much at once.  UBI is a tough sell to America, he should focus his energies on that.  I was listening to the Freakonomics episode he was on and he was doing great until the show got to the second part, where he starts discussing his social credit system.  It's not like it's a bad idea, but it's too abstracted out from the current system and looks far too outlandish for the average voting American right now and he already has a lot on his plate with UBI.  Yet he spent half the show talking about this quasi Yelp rating-Gamified system where you earn points for doing gov't deemed pro-social activity.   He can't be doing that right now.  Especially with the momentum he's getting.  He clearly has thought a lot about it and has a plan for it, but that isn't the point.  His platform has no room for opening him up to being diminished by debates about CDC and WHO recommendations about dick skin and how politically onerous and contentious a gov't social credit system is.
